What are your ya'll's thoughts on Marcus Mariota as a Franchise QB?

Recommended Posts

He's still really just a kid and not every kid can come out playing like Tom Brady. I think in a few years, when hes 27 or 28, you'll see a much better and more complete version. Now, whether that is franchise worthy or not we'll just have to see. Same for Winston.

Just to give you something different to discuss than draft strategy and which QB to pick. Having grown up in Alabama most everyone that was a pro football fan was either Falcons or Saints. I, for some mysterious reason, fell in love with the 'Fins. Marino, Mark Duper, Mark Clayton, SB '84,  Shula, etc. After Marino retired, I quit following the team and focused mostly on 'Bama football. However, I moved just South of Nashville 10 years ago, and although I have reeealllly tried to become a Titans fan, even went to a few games, they really make it hard to like them. Very hohum roster after Mcnair, no blockbuster draft picks, few competitive teams, etc.

Folks around were crazy about drafting the "franchise" Marcus Mariota, and still think he is the best thing since Mcnair. He is a very likeable guy, says the right things, involved in the community, and is seen as a great leader according to what I 've read about him...but I am not sure I see him as a championship caliber QB...someone who can put the team on his shoulders and win it with his arm.

So, for those willing to do "whatever it takes" to land one of the kids in the draft, would you give up the same for Mariota?

The Titans just picked up his 5th year. In the previous 4 years, he has 1 playoff appearance and an 88.6 % QBR. Is this "franchise"?

Its hard because he had a breakout year in 2016 and this year I really thought he would continue growing and instead regressed. But I have to wonder how much of that was due to such a blah basic offensive scheme and they did make the playoffs.

Personally I think he is the real deal and will keep proving so but I also think this is a really big season and he needs to rebound back to his previous numbers and developmental track.

LOL. I was more looking for (hypothetically, of course):

If Mariota is and has been your QB for the last 4 years, with the same stats/results that he has put up for the titans, would billsmafia be satisfied that he is the "franchise QB" for the next decade?

Would you trade 12, 22, and next year's 1st for Marcus Mariota?

As of now I would not.  Titans went 9-7 last year but I have to say without going 5-1 in their division they wouldn't of made the playoffs.

With Luck and Watson I can see that 5-1 going to 3-3.

I don't care about QB stat lines, the team wins and losses is all that matters.

He seems like he will be a competent NFL starter.  To most on TBD that is a description of a "franchise QB".

I think hes a rising star. Mularky really handcuffed him. I think once hes allowed ot pass the ball hes gonna be a real good one. Having Murray and Henry really hurt Mariotas productivity but helped them win games

Just based off the hype surrounding their respective drafts, it felt like Winston and Mariota were going to be better prospects than Wentz and Goff.

Neither Jameis or Marcus have lived up to their hype imo.

Both are quality starters, however.

I don't think Mariotta will ever be more than a middling starter....almost a curse...because he is good enough that you really don't need or want to go try and draft a replacement...but not the guy who really makes the roster around him better...needs a good roster around to make him better.  .....You can throw Andy Dalton in that boat along with Tannehill.  I'm willing to wait one more year on Winston...I think he is the more physically gifted of the two (he and Marriotta) I think there may be another step up to be made for him..we'll see.

As far as this relates to the Bills....I'd certainly be tempted to take Mariotta and leave the mystery prizes behind doors 1-6 in this draft alone....good/competent QB play is still way better than unknown draft pick QB most of the time.
