Attendance Issues in Cali and how it relates to us

Don't know why, but they sure don't seem to manage the NFL very well here in California.

 

Putting a 2d team in LA is beyond idiotic. The Chargers should be San Diego, period. They won't last ten years in LA.

 

San Fran has a new stadium that seems like it's always empty the past couple of years.

 

I didn't really appreciate this until I moved here, but San Francisco doesn't have a team anymore. San Jose does. That new stadium is an hour away from the city...without traffic.

 

Like most great cities, San Francisco is all about being in the city. The 49ers played in the middle of Golden Gate Park for 25 years and then another 40+ across town at Candlestick. Now they expect people to drive 40+ miles down the peninsula to sit in a 100 degree stadium, just as they drove their successful head coach out of town and the team collapsed? LOL....good luck with that! San Fran is a case study in what not to do when building a new stadium. And p.s., the Raiders will also be a disaster in Vegas.

I'm just curious as to how is that different from Orchard Park and Buffalo, relatively. Foxboro and Boston. Irving Texas. Even Meadowlands which is 45-60 minutes for everyone even if it's 4.5-6 miles

All the more reason to prove that sometimes having an older relic of a stadium like, The Ralph, is a better alternative to building a shrine of a stadium far away from the core of your fan base just because the stadium becomes more viable. NFL needs to move back to its roots and stop trying to appeal to the masses. I think because of it people are starting to sour on the NFL and leaning more towards college football.

As a native life long LA resident, all these points are valid. LA doesn't deserve 1 team, let alone 2. This will always be a Laker/Dodger town before anything else. There's 3x more Raider fans in LA then Ram/Charger fans combined. The new stadium can't get built fast enough considering the Moseleium is a aging dump surrounded by ghetto. I will enjoy watching my Bills in that cute little soccer field called the stub hub....

Spoke to a customer a few years ago. Her and her husband were 49ers season ticket holder from day one at Candlestick. Team still wanted a $50,000 PSL, on top of the Season Ticket prices.

In San Diego, fans are abysmal... it really is your stereotypical California city. On Saturdays and Sundays, you don't see many football jerseys, and in years past many Chargers "fans" out and about while their team was PLAYING!!! An utter disgrace to not watch long before they were announcing they were leaving.

 

I'm SO LUCKY that Ohio is a great football place to be, far away from a wasteland for football... fans who truly appreciate football. Los Angeles deserves ZERO NFL teams.

Re: San Francisco...besides having a poor team, there is a serious design flaw w/ the new stadium. They thought they'd be building this stadium around SF. They didn't have time to re-design the SF intended stadium that was built in Santa Clara. SF is quite bit cooler than the South Bay. You cannot sit in the sun w/o the risk of heat stroke (or worse). It's crazy. 49ers are looking at putting some type of covering / shade over the stadium. Until then, it'll look empty as the fans either avoid the place or find another spot to watch the game.

One difference is those are all clearly suburbs of the main city. OP is only about 10 miles from Buffalo, no? Not so here -- San Jose is larger than San Francisco, so has it's own vibe, it's own traffic, etc. Move Giants Stadium from E Rutherford to Trenton or Cherry Hill (outside Philly) and that's more like what you have here.

 

NE and Dallas have been in those locations for decades so that's always been their home. It's not like the Cowboys built a fan base playing in Dealy Plaza and then moved to Irving.

I've always loved The Ralph or The Cap or whatever people call it these days. I appreciate how it's a simple structure built purely for football enthusiasts that can experience the game in all types of weather. What amazes me is that it always seems like the Bills sell out a ton or have mostly filled stadiums even when we suck (which has been frequent these last 17 years).

 

When we went to Toronto for one game per year, that really pissed me off because we wasted home field advantage and kinda dissed the city of Buffalo at the same time by doing it. Then the NFL owner groups and Roger keep calling for the Bills to update our stadium and saying Buffalo is a small market and not pulling its weight.

 

But then I look at this article and see the mess in LA with the Rams and the Chargers. That city doesn't deserve one team, let alone two. San Fran has a new stadium that seems like it's always empty the past couple of years.

 

My point is, I'm proud of our fan base and the "lower-class" stadium we have. I'm proud that we fill it to support our mostly bad to mediocre teams in good weather and bad. I hope we are able to stay at The Ralph for a long time kind of like the Packers at Lambaeu.

That makes sense. And all of that is arguably true. But Oakland is even closer. And a different city and different team and different vibe. Seems like even though San Jose and San Francisco has their own vibes they are both elitist hipster cities. . What's the diff?

 

The real answer is, nobody cares in any of the 3 cities because hoops is about to start up and the Warriors are unbeatable.

The move for L.A. Is for the local television contracts and they don't really care if people go to the games. I understand the Chargers' move given their stadium situation and the city's lack of effort. The NFL should have gotten the Raiders back here again. Getting them to Vegas means that people out near me will drive the 4 hours or fly.

 

Going to a Rams game sucks because the stadium experience just isn't very good. The Coliseum doesn't have the logistics necessary to put on game day. It just isn't built for that many people in any way, shape or form. It's a college stadium and doesn't work for the NFL experience. I may go out to Carson this season when Buffalo comes out this way. Both teams have a few years to get good before the new stadium goes up, and that will help a lot, but if there are no stars near it, LA fans aren't going to go.

I'm not sticking up for the crappy attendance at the Rams game Sunday but the stadium blows and is in the worst part of town. The Chargers don't even play in a football stadium. When they move into their new stadium, the Rams and the Chargers will sell out every game for a few years. Then and only then will we know if the city will support the teams.

That area is not so bad. Not if one has some common sense, which is true of any city. The new MLS Soccer stadium in being built in that same neighborhood right now. USC football packs the Coliseum in games that last into the night. The issue is folks don't care about the Rams in the same way. Simple as that. LA sports goes like this:

1. Lakers

1a. Dodgers

2. USC Football

RAIDERS might be 1a actually.

 

10. The other teams in whatever order one chooses.

 

The Coliseum is a dump, but it's a dump that is easy to get to. If the Rams win folks will show up. If this season is like 2016 attendance will get even worse. There is an entire generation of LA people who are used to having no NFL team. That's a lot to overcome. And I've been in LA 15 years and I can count on one hand the number of times I've seen someone walking around with Chargers apparel. I bet they move back to Diego sooner than later.

LA wanted and still wants the Raiders...out of all the teams the Raiders have the largest fan base...several people who live in LA said they have never met a Rams or Chargers fan there but know lots of Raiders fans...

Just curious but why do you think the Raiders will be a disaster in Vegas? I think it was terrible that the Raiders left Oakland but I also think Vegas will do very well supporting a team. I lived there for a few years and residents were always looking for things to do outside of the casinos. You have the local resident support, you have visiting fans (who wouldn't want to go to Vegas to watch the Bills play) and you now have Raiders fans coming in for home games.

 

The Vegas Knights sold around 13,000 season tickets. Yeah its season one, but I think that's an indication showing the support for a local team there. Your talking about 10 home football games. Raiders will do just fine in Vegas. Of the three teams that moved this is the one that I actually think will thrive. Still sucks the Raiders left Oakland though but they were probably the smart ones to leave that area.

There is fan who raised money from gofunding who is putting up 5 billboards around LA Rams stadium for 3 home gamews just to tell NFL that they suck for taking away teams from fans.
