CB DeShawn Shead is taking a free-agent visit to Buffalo to meet with the Bills, per a league source. Shead started 15 games for the Seahawks last season and played at a high level, but he tore the ACL and meniscus in his left knee in the divisional round of the playoffs. Shead was originally a restricted free agent, but the Seahawks did not tender him, making him an unrestricted free agent. Shead, 28, also served as Seattle's special-teams captain last season. He has shown the versatility to play CB, safety and nickel during his time with the Seahawks.

FYI: Hawks fans in comments not happy with this development

Shead (knee) is doing well in rehab but isn't expected back for the start of the 2017 season, John Boyle of the Seahawks' official site reports. Shead had surgery to repair his torn ACL in January. It would take a near superhuman recovery for him to return for the start of the 2017 season, but the Seahawks are hopeful that he'll be able to play at some point during the year.

Bills fans should be hoping more. Our GM is more prone to take on your lame and infirm...

But, more seriously, the guy was good out here in the PNW. He would make a solid addition. Maybe even bring that Seattle rugby tackling technique with him?

Was just going to say, he'd likely start out on PUP

But good player

I agree, played on a defense that had swagger and an edge to them. Would be nice to have someone that could bring some of that to this team.

I think there be a few here unpleased with his signing due to his injury and that he won't be completely ready for the start of 2017.

Good article from before the season. Apparently he's a decathlete.

Shead is manhandling opposing receivers at the line. He has primarily played as an extra safety and special-teams mainstay from his arrival with Seattle in 2012 as an undrafted rookie free agent.

He plays cornerback like a safety, a blend he says is easier for him because of his career as a decathlete. At safety, Shead said he has to know the whole picture: formations, plus the gaps and blocking schemes of offensive linemen in the run and pass games.

Last season, cornerback Cary Williams failed to master the Seahawks step-kick technique of jamming receivers at the line. Strong safety Kam Chancellor missed the first two games holding out, then was injured for others. Free safety Earl Thomas was never fully healthy because of a shoulder injury.

So Shead made five starts at cornerback and one at strong safety. Sometimes, he would play one series at strong safety, another at free safety and then the next series at right cornerback. You can count on one hand or finger how many players in the league do that. Then again, few if any NFL players have been a competitive decathlete.

It helps a lot, just in the transition, Shead said. In decathlon, you have to transition from one event to the next event within 30 minutes in a competition. Just the transition and changing of mindsets, techniques and abilities, I think it transfers on the field.
