In a move that will have a ripple effect on all QB-needy teams, Patriots are not expected to trade QB Jimmy Garoppolo, per league sources.

This is not about increasing his value, this is the player being good, really good.

Lets be real. Its about Belichick trying to fleece another team like he did with Cassel. He isn't getting the two first round picks that he wanted so he held off for a desperate team. Calling a player really good after two games against bad teams that had no tape on him is premature. Yes he looked good in a dink and dunk offense. That doesn't make him really good.

What are you talking about? Their defense, which is the issue here, played extremely well early in the season. The reason the Bills scored a bunch of points was because of ST gaffes (the Cards had 25 first downs to the Bills measly 16). The Bills had under 300 total yards and were 4-13 on third down conversions - which ain't great. In their other games, they gave up 23, 7, 17, 21, 3, and 6 points. Christ, man. In their first seven games, they gave up an average of 289.6 ypg, and the Pats with Garrapolo had 363. The next best team had 306, and the other 5 teams all had under 300. Check out pro-football-reference before making such claims. They finished #2 overall in yards allowed, and it's not like they got better later in the season.

12, 18, 26 ,31, 32 yards per game. 18, 18, 27, 30, 32 points per game. Removing the Pats and the Bills... those are the offensive rankings of the teams they faced in the first 7 games. Rank 12 in yards and 18 in points was Seattle who was pretty bad themselves the first half. Arizona was bad last year. Miami was a train wreck on defense at the beginning of the year as well.

You're avoiding the evidence i presented about how they played early in the season and their yardagr totals. You also don't mention their talent on d which is real. Most importantly, they were freaking THIRD overall in defensive DVOA. Check out FO.

They played against SF, LA, Jets, and a bad Seattle offense during that span. Most defenses looked good against those teams.

Is that counting pre-season?

Pre-season don't mean anything. EJ Manuel looked like Joe Montana in pre-season.

I think that the Pats just may see Janeane Garofalo as their future. Brady may have another 2 years in him, tops, imo. I think they were impressed enough early last year to want to hold onto her.

That is a silly nickname....I don't get silly nicknames for the sake of them. Just like Marcia Brady.

Haha. This is completely about increasing his value. Lombardi is in love with Belichick. He wants to be his SWM.

Same with Schefter

Because he's a free agent next year and is likely gone. Might as well deal him when interest is at it's highest. He'll be gone next year

Not so fast

They are $50M+ under the cap. Why not transition tag him next year? They have the cap room to keep or trade him

They have so much flexibility. They could give him a two year deal, he makes one million this year the franchise tag would be 23 million next season. Sit down and give him 2 years for 24 million, you will start once Tom falls off.

If BB thinks he is the next long term QB for Patriots they can make that move without blinking.

This exactly. Unless the Browns blow you away (#12 this year and their first next year) if the Pats are sold on the guy they have plenty of avenues to keep him. He's dirt cheap this year still and a lot can happen in a year, especially with a 40 year old Brady. Even if everything plays out perfectly this year they have plenty of avenues (transition tag, franchise tag) to control his rights next year. I know everyone thinks the Browns will be bad for a decade, but if Garrett is for real, Jimmy is for real and they add 5-6 good starters with their $100 mil of cap room I think that team is closer to the playoffs than they are the #1 overall pick.

Either way the Pats have to tell everyone they are keeping him. If they really are keeping him they need him to know how they value him. If they aren't keeping him it ups the price tag.

Browns willing to give up pick 12 for Garoppolo but Pats want more.

12 is plenty and a steal.

Not if he's a franchise QB and more importantly not if the Pats believe he's a franchise QB. If they are convinced he's their guy for the next 15 years 12 is a steal, for the Browns.

DVOA -- i suggest you learn it. It factors in strength of schedule first and foremost. Bette yet, look at the talent on AZ's defense last year. They were loaded. Edited by dave mcbride

if the pats believed he was the franchise qb for the next 15 years why would they trade him. Just trying to rip the browns off like they did with cassel and are gonna do with brisset in a couple years

Because his contract is up after this season and they can't negotiate with him exlusively because he wasn't a first round pick. Think robert woods.

This is brilliant gamesmanship by the Patriots. They would much rather trade him for a bounty of picks this year than keep him on the roster for 1 more year then get nothing in return. If the put him on the trade block however, they would receive less in compensation. By saying that he is not for trade they are forcing QB needy teams to essentially over pay and outbid themselves to get a deal done. Teams like the Browns and Bears need to call the Patriots bluff.

@RapSheet

My understanding is #Browns are expected to make a run at Jimmy G. They can offer the most. I do not believe the #Patriots want to trade him

Haha. Are all these dudes in bed with the Pats to drive up players' values?

If Brady gets hurt, they aren't winning a SB. Trade him before he plays more than 3 games and gets revealed

seeing as Garoppolo has some leverage (agreeing to sign long term with team traded to) you would think he and his agent will know ahead of announcement.

that 2nd Cleveland got from Houston for osweiller will come into play.....belichick covets 2nd rounders for salary/talent = value
