Roethlesberger sounds like he has one foot out the door...

On a Pittsburgh radio station said he is not committing to returning next season and is contemplating if he wants to continue playing taking into account everything with his health, future health, family ,etc and wants to make sure its the right decision whichever way he ends up...

That would be devastating for Pittsburgh to lose him out of the blue...

As many a player has said before: "The minute you start thinking about retiring you should do it"

He is owed 19 million for next season alone. He is not going anywhere. Plus he might have to pay back some of that signing bonus. Like Brett Farve said Big Ben is just talking like that because his team just lost and that hurts. By July he will be ready to go

He looked like crap this year.

He used to be a killer on the move but this year he couldn't get his feet going and ended up making a lot of awkward, off-balance wobbly duck throws.

I enjoy good offensive football and dating back to that Bills game I watched him every week and he looks old.

In a much less physical NFL........relatively speaking.........like 1996-Jim-Kelly old.

If he plans on playing out that contract he needs to get Manning/Brady/Brees serious about his physical conditioning.

I hope he quits for the Bills playoff chances sake........but I hate to see a great passer go to.

He has a family now and he's sick of the younger guys that don't have the drive to win it all. He's putting his body on the line out there and if he doesn't think he has a chance to win it all then what's the point. I think ultimately he comes back for one more year then says he's going to retire...Only to come back again and again. Pretty typical at the end of a player's career to want out then miss it but not want to have to go through camp and all that. Favre did it for like 5 years

Certainly wasn't his best year, but he was still a very effective passer. I do think he has lost some of his ability to create outside of the pocket though - Badol is right that he looks slower these days. He'll be back in 2017 but how much longer he plays now is a genuine question. I can see him maybe playing 2 more and then calling it quits. I think it might have been a guarded message to the Pittsburgh hierarchy who have a lot of big FA decisions to make this year. Ben is saying... "okay the end is in sight... start loading up for a final run and kick the salary cap can down the road as much as you need to do it." Rodgers actually gave a pretty similar message to Green Bay's decision makers as well. Ben has been to 3 dances and won it all twice.... Aaron has only been there once but you feel has more years left. They are both turning their minds to legacy.

I live in the Pittsburgh area. Most fans are 50/50 when it comes to Ben. Ben is not a very nice person behind the scenes here. He is banned from a lot of places in town because he felt he should not pay his check "because he is Ben". He got his act together with getting married but does not interact with his fans here much. Pittsburgh Steeler fans are a weird bunch anyways. Most are spoiled cry asses and when that team don't win, you will see those towels get tossed. Back in the 80's and early 90's Id go to games and the entire upper bowl would be empty. Buffalo has much more loyal fans. I see a ton of Steeler players in the casinos here, mostly late at night, playing blackjack. Wourlds and Harrison are great guys and that night is when I got to meet a young Ben. He was a !@#$....

I have a friend that went to Pitt for college & he has a ton of friends down there. They are all diehard Steeler fans & it was very surprising most of them want to move on from Big Ben. As you said, they say he is not very liked around town. My friend who is a diehard Bills fan always tells them, "be careful what you wish for." It is also suprisising most of his friends don't like Tomlin either. I think you classified it the best. Steeler fans are very spoiled. They don't know how good they have it.

You are way off on the financials. He's due only $12M next season and $17M in each of 2018 and 2019. $12M is Ryan Fitzpatrick money. This is about his payday. Also he would not have to pay back any of his signing bonus money if he were to retire. The Steelers really have no choice here. They've got to pony up and if/when they do, he'll play.

I can see this...a lot of the younger players care more about making highlight-reel plays and getting paid than they do about winning.

That said, I don't see that alone as a reason to retire. To me, if you can physically play and you're still in good shape, then why not keep playing? Ben's been beaten up for his entire career, so I wouldn't blame him for retiring.

I think it is as much about rings as money. I think he wants to Steelers to go and do for him what Belichick and Elway have done in recent years for Brady and Manning. Go and be aggressive in free agency get in guys who can help him make another Championship run.

My brother-in-law went to college with him and said there were all kinds of not so nice rumors invilovng him and women. Probably not surprisingly considering his history since but....

With that being said I'd be shocked if he didn't come back.

steelers aren't really in a great cap situation either. bell, timmons, harrison, villaneuva all need contracts and they have 41 mil to sign those guys.

And that is what Ben is waiting on for me.... keep those guys, bring in a couple of FAs and kick the cap can down the road.

"One thing to take into account with all of this is that Roethlisberger retiring would cause him to owe the Steelers $18.6 million, barring a clause in his contract preventing such a payback."

He's got almost 19 million reasons to be on that field next year.
