Just say "the thing is..." I don't know why so many people feel the need to say "is" twice there. Another one that is extremely common among sportscasters: "These type of..." I believe John Madden was the originator of this. He would always say he loves "these type-a guys..." Now it seems to have been adopted as acceptable. I hear it during every game. Very annoying! Just say "THIS type of guy..." or "these guys..."
