($1500) NFPLA has already commented that the league can not make any changes without their agreement; they already have that discussion in past with mandatory thigh pads that the NFL forced players to wear and may have cost some players performance bonuses. Hot Buffalo Wings
I always think about how much safer helmets can be and it doesn't seem too complicated. I remember thinking about this when...who was the QB, Keenam maybe...was slammed to the ground and the back of his head hit the turf hard. He was dizzy but they let him stay in the game. They should have the shock absorber that the have on the crown of some helmets, on the back as well.

TheFunPolice
Funny how the NFLPA's first reaction is to remind everyone that the NFL can't just switch equipment without giving them a cookie first. In the same statement they whine about thigh pads. But player safety and stuff.

Dorkington
The cynic in me says it'd just encourage even more dangerous hits, and the concussions would stick around because of it :|

Saxum
Not doubting you, just curious: how did thigh pads cost performance bonuses? I was being sarcastic but a number of players, mostly DBs, stated the pads slowed them down - slow down, less chance of making interceptions, etc which may get them performance bonuses. The NFLPA did object very vocally about the mandate to new safety equipment however.

Saxum
Of course they will. Helmets keep your skull from cracking. They don't stop your brain from moving. Of course not. That is why they they mandate them for mototcycles, bicycles in some jurisdictions, etc. They help via concusions but it depends on type of blow, how fast you and what you are hitting are going, how hard surface is, etc.
dpberr
It's a step in the right direction for sure. However, it's short sighted to put new helmets in rotation just for the NFL. If anything, they should go to the youth sports and all the way up the ladder first.

Who is going to pay for the helmets for youth sports @ 1500 each which will probably be stolen very fast?
reddogblitz
Of course they will. Helmets keep your skull from cracking. They don't stop your brain from moving. The guy who discovered the whole CTE thing says that helmet technology is the wrong approach and won't help. The problem is not the blow to the head, it's the heads reaction to the hit that causes the brain to collide with the skull which causes the concussions and CTE. I suppose if you could build a helmet that would cushion the blow so much that the head didn't snap back causing the brain to collide with the skull that would work. I suppose it's possible. The NFL could do a lot more to prevent this kind of stuff by ejecting any player that lowers his head and crams into an opponent. Would probably be a lot of ejections at first, but they'd learn.
