Fred Jackson cut??(UPDATE: Pegula says Hell To The No)

Recommended Posts

You also don't want to waste money. It's a tough business for tough people. Fred is a unique example. And it gets sticky if, say, we can get a 6m OG but not an 8m OG (if of course we really think the 8m is better and better value).

I agrred with your initial assessment. If it prevents them from doing something, then you hold your nose and do it. But if it's just moving dollars around, then Fred's still worth keeping

Here's quote from Peter King's MMQB today that could apply to Freddie, IMO...

“I’ll forever cherish being able to play with Reggie. It was an honor and a privilege to share a locker room with him. He taught me more about football than any other player I’ve ever been around.”

— Colts quarterback Andrew Luck, in remarks to the Indianapolis Star, after the team cut Reggie Wayne.

oh my...if they are going to add a year to Fred's contract then i'm going to jump on the "time to cut him" bandwagon.

what they should do is they should tell him the situation and say they will give him the chance to compete at camp for a spot or they can release him now. that's fair. knowing Fred, he will want to compete if he knows he's getting a fair shot. then Fred either beats out the other guys or he doesn't. if he doesn't they can release him or he can retire. best player deserves to be on the roster.

adding another year is dumb though. i guess i don't understand the thinking behind that Fred might get beat out in camp and then that's that. they are in a good position right now to go in another direction if that's the case.

Thanks for that quote. I'm a believer of guys like that add a lot to a team. I also think, however, that there are players, coaches, GMs and owners who say "Yeah that's great but it's worth about 50 bucks. It doesn't have any real worth."

I bet the answer to that question if posed to people in the know would vary from it's worth $50 to its worth millions.

Depends on the structure of the agreement. It's possible that they keep the guaranteed money around what he was to receive this year alone, while lowering his cap figure for this year. Maybe they approach him with an honorable way of retiring as a Bill under "his terms", orchestrated under the terms of a more cap and team friendly for the Bills. Devil is in the details.

Source: #Bills will keep Fred Jackson. Told releasing him was not option. Contract re-structure was/is @wgrz

Crazy to cut a guy who gives you a great backup option. Fred can still do it all even though it won't be 16 games. I can see him as a healthy scratch player in some games, I think if we get into the playoffs he would have a determination to produce.

Hope we get the double dose of good news that Brown will be traded/cut and Freddy retained. From strictly a football perspective, Brown is a terrible running back who shouldn't waste the roster spot of a more deserving player. Powell would be a better choice because he can both provide speed depth at RB and contribute to special teams, where Brown is strictly a back, and not a good one at that.

Based on what? He looked pretty good to me in the highlights that I saw from Philly. Never really got a chance last year, so what do you base your expert opinion that he is a terrible running back? Can't see any evidence to support it at all.

It's never been a matter of determination for Jackson, it's a matter of if he physically is able to?

From what I saw of Freddy and the other backs last year, he's the 2nd best RB on the team when on the field.

And then there's what he contributes off the field.

I'm glad he's staying.

I do wonder, though, what Pegula's role was. GMs are happiest and most productive when owners don't meddle.

Btw, I remember when we signed LB Phil Villipiano in 1980 when many said he was over the hill - but we signed him more for what he'd contribute in the locker room than what he'd contribute on the field. And Phil did indeed help the Bills get better. I think Freddy has an important role to play on this team. Freddy motivates his fellow players to commit themselves a little more. And that, friends, adds to more wins.

According to Graham, they want him to restructure.

Seems like a money thing to me, they don't think Fred is worth what he is making considering how many touches he'll get going forward. McCoy will be getting the bulk of the touches with Dixon being the power back. Both Dixon/Brown can contribute to ST which Fred can't.

Even the Fred supporters are kind of selling him short here. I thought he played really well last season relatively speaking. He was hurt, he played behind an awful o-line that had defenders in the backfield before he got the ball half the time, he had no QB support which led to opposing defenses selling out for the run, and he had crap offensive coaching. Look at how CJ and Bryce Brown did in the same situation.

outside the stiff arm run he was under 4.0 yards per cary when healthy and under 3.5 ypc for the year. outside of the one run his long was also 17 yards. granted behind a terrible line, but if you didnt LOVE the person, it would be a hard season to hype.

he could fill a niche role, but at this point hes a specialist, and not a special teamer which sometimes makes it a tough spot when constructing a 45 man game day roster.

+1 Accept it guys. This is football. Players won't always hang it up when their time is up. Why would they? Fred will probably find a team to give him a couple million more for another year, and good for him if he gets that deal. Bruce did, Thurman did, Andre did... doesn't change the reality that it was the right move.

Fred won't hold a grudge. He knows it's the business. And it is a smart move for our organization. There's no longer room in that backfield.

well said. We always be a Buffalo Bill at the end of his career.
