People ragging on Shakir for the drop but completely forgetting all the catches, including the huge 3rd and long conversion. Which he could also be counted on for last year. Once the season gets into full swing, Shakir will be a rising star in the NFL. Cook could've been a breakout star last year but was poorly utilized. If the coaching staff can get out of it's own way, Cook and Shakir will be big names by the end of the season.

My thoughts are he still isn't an accurate passer and at some point he will have to develop more sound mechanics like Josh did to be successful in the NFL.

Kyle Allen sucks. Cook is fast. Shakir has developed a case of the Knox. The run defense looks much better without Edmunds. The defense as a whole looks more aggressive with McDermott calling the shots.

Is it the front office or the coaching staff? Beane has proven himself to be a wizard when it comes to the draft and free agency. He has never been shy about acquiring talent. Utilization of talent provided has been the achillies heel of this staff the past couple seasons. I was never a big fan of Edmunds but, facts are facts. In college the VT staff had him all over the field. He was on the edge blitzing, he was dropping back in coverage, he was being moved around. They consistently made sure that he was a matchup advantage in their favor. He comes to Buffalo and is basically just stand in the middle of the field guy and wait for the play to come to you. I put that on Edmunds but I am starting to think that is what the staff wanted from him. That's a big problem. The usage of Cook last year is another example. One fumble limited him to what, 8 games? On a team that struggled to run the football. And he, like Elam, was proving himself towards the end of the year as an explosive player. He's also in a camp battle this year. And let us not forget that this is the same staff that started Nathan Peterman...

Is Matt Barkley a better fit than Kyle Allen in this offense?
Luka replied to Tipster19's topic in The Stadium Wall
Happy for him but that's a damn shame for us. McGough lit the USFL up and he really is a very similar style to Allen, in that you could put him in and expect him to operate 80% of the offense no problem. -
But as a corner your NUMBER ONE job is to cover the receiver. Allowing a couple extra yards on a run is a lot different than giving up chunk yardage down the field. Corner that can cover >>>> corner that can play the run. Make excuses for the shoddy job this coaching staff does in evaluating and utilizing talent all you like, there's a reason we haven't overcome the Chiefs to win it all, and it's usually clapping for no reason.

Outside of MLB, Where are the Bills Worse in 2023?
Luka replied to jwhit34's topic in The Stadium Wall
Never seen a more mediocre player so over hyped. The kid could not play the run if his life depended on it. With his size and speed he would be better suited on the edge with the addition of about 20 pounds. Standing in the middle of the field watching the play unfold and reacting a second too late is all I'll remember of Edmunds. -
Jordan is underrated. Really hurt us the year we didn't sign him. He's disruptive in the middle and a solid rotational guy for this defense. Happy to have him still.

Sign Alex McGough you cowards! -
But he was near the ball! SO what if the opposing offense picked up 15 on a 3rd and 8!

As long as Shakir is WR3 I am pleased with our receiving corps. Shakir had a couple handful of very meaningful catches on 3rd and medium and 3rd and long last season. I also am very high on Shorter and really love the addition of size all around that the front office has added, but again, it's up to the coaching staff to get them on the field and utilize the talent appropriately. Hopefully he practices "correctly" and is working with Dawkins so he can fill in at left tackle when needed.

The USFL did this also and the transparency is great. No harm in letting the fans experience the process of the call, especially when it's a long pause of a minute or two while it's being sorted out.

My biggest pet peeve with this front office and coaching staff is rearing its ugly head yet again this offseason. We pick Elam with our 1st round pick last year. He is a physically gifted cover corner with great size and ball skills. When given a chance to play late last year, he was excellent against guys like Tyreek Hill and Jamar Chase, two of the best receivers in the league. And he's in a competition for the #2 corner position... with Dane Jackson... A couple days ago Chris Brown mentioned on One Bills Drive he may lose this competition because of... now get this... his ability to set the edge in the run game... To me, this kind of thing is exactly why this staff can not get over the hump and win it all. This is a passing league. The defense is in a unique position to have two elite corners on either side of the field, which frees up Poyer and Hyde to make plays, allows Taron Johnson to be more aggressive in run support and gives the defensive line that extra second needed to get to the quarterback. But we're worried about run support? From an outside corner? That's why Benford and Jackson are rotating out there? Who by the way, are typically getting torched in coverage. Dane Jackson is said to always be around the ball... okay but a yard behind the receiver while he's making a big play isn't exactly what I'd be looking for as a coach when evaluating a defensive back. And Elam's strengths and weaknesses coming out of Florida were no mystery, this isn't something that should have come as a shock to McDermott. So why pick him there? He is corner 1 talent level and would most likely be in that spot on a lot of other teams in this league. At some point this staff needs to get out of it's own way or they will waste the career of one of the best quarterbacks to ever step on a football field.

They don't, you get a 4th and 15 from your own 25. Technically, you can opt to try an onside kick but why would you? Offense on the field with one play is way better odds than converting an onside kick. I didn't see a single onside kick this XFL season and I watched a good 80% of the games. The 4th and 15 from your 25 is what the NFL needs to look at. Made for some exciting finishes in the XFL.

Luka replied to jwhit34's topic in The Stadium Wall
Might want to watch the season play out before you declare we are worse at middle linebacker. Removing the young, statuesque kid from the middle and putting someone who knows how to read a run play in there might actually benefit the defense. -
With the Bills looking at running a ton more 12 personnel I don't think his pass blocking is going to be as much of a concern as it's being made out to be.

Training Camp (scrimmage) - 8/4 5:00pm - The return of Blue and Red
Luka replied to The Wiz's topic in The Stadium Wall
With all of the talent on the defensive side of the ball, I'd love to see the play calling and substitutions actually fit the offense we're facing that week, instead of just lingering in zone and hoping for the best. We've relied on outright talent the past couple years and it's time to use it schematically. -
No respect for Jordan Phillips.

McDermott must've met Billy Napier. They are very similar guys with similar values. Lots of Gators. I'm liking it.

Beane is a man after my heart these past two years. Elam, Torrence and now Shorter?

The Battle of a lifetime: Klein, Spector, Dodson, Bernard, Williams
Luka replied to NewEra's topic in The Stadium Wall
It's really just a competition between Klein, Spector and Dodson, which after last preseason I think Spector has a chance at winning. With McDermott calling the defense I wouldn't be surprised to see Williams or Bernard playing the "nickel" corner in run/pass situations. Hell, Williams has the size and speed to play safety. It's an interesting pick depending on how the coaching staff utilizes him. -
During one of the British attempts to exterminate the Irish people in the 1600s, many survivors were relocated to the island of Jamaica where they were slaves along side west Africans in the sugar can fields. He might be more Irish than yourself.
