Annual Way Too Early Mock Draft '22 edition
billsfan89 replied to thunderingsquid's topic in College Football
I don't think the Bills will be looking at safety in the first three rounds. I likely think the Bills are looking at O-line, DT and DE as their top needs. I know a lot of draft capital has been sunk into the DE position but both Addision and Hughes are free agents who even if one are brought back likely won't be more than rotational players. I don't know how comfortable they are with AJ, Boogie and Groot at DE. I don't think they go DE in the top 2 rounds but in round 3 I can see them going for some depth/options. I think they easily go O-line in round 1 and DT in round 2. Even if they sign back Harrison I still think McD wants to get more physical up the middle and will invest draft capital into doing so. Easily can bring back Phillips and have a 2nd round DT take over Butler's rotational snaps. I did the same thing no trades, my results were. I think the Bills go O-line heavy and then defense heavy in the rounds 3-6. They have to know they need to protect Josh better. -
Josh is the most physically gifted QB in the NFL. He is also a pretty polished player as well. But he needs to refine some of his decision making before he becomes the top QB consistently. He went from having the second best QB season (and a runner up in MVP voting) to being a top 5ish QB this year. Not bad regression but certainly a mild step back. I think Josh's numbers/play got hurt by two factors this season. The first is inconsistent O-line play. Injuries, Covid and shuffling around of players and bad guard play at times all hurt this team's ability to both consistently protect Josh and consistently run block. The O-line in 2020 had some issues but overall was playing better especially pass blocking where they had a very good rating. The second factor is teams adjusting to Josh and some issues with playcalling. I do think the playcalling was hampered by O-line play but there were certainly some non-Oline related issues with playcalling. But teams simply were more willing to force Josh to play "patient" and dink and dunk them to death. Josh at times would just take what the defense was giving him other times he would be hampered and force plays which resulted in turnovers. I feel that if this team can find a way to get better more consistent O-line play along with Josh adjusting to defenses he will be a consistent top 2-3 QB year in and year out. No QB not even Mahomes has his physical gifts.

Jerry Hughes’ Last Regular Season Home Game?
billsfan89 replied to Coach Tuesday's topic in The Stadium Wall
I have no clue how good Hughes is doing this season. So I have no idea if they will bring him back. To my eye test Hughes hasn't had too much of an impact PFF grades him out well and he had a few decent grades from All 22 earlier in the season. But from watching the games especially the back half of the season it looks like Hughes hasn't made much of an impact. The Bills have an interesting choice to make. Both Addision and Hughes are free agents and there isn't a proven option behind them. Behind Addision and Hughes you have Groot who flashed as a rookie and is a high round pick then you have Boogie and AJ two recent second round picks who haven't done too much. I think the front office brings back one of either Hughes or Addision just to have a proven vet DE but which one is the more productive of the two? -
The Jags really are a poverty franchise if they hire BOB. At least Meyer was really successful in college.

I hope the Bills can retain Levi and Harrison. Both are solid to good starters on good defense. They will command some money but I think this team can work around the cap constraints to find money to give them a fair offer. If they can retain those two along with maybe a handful of other players (some combo of Zimmer, Mac, Addison, Obada and Neil) I think the team will be in a good position for 2022.

538 analysis: Bills underperformed with schedule set up to dominate
billsfan89 replied to beebe's topic in The Stadium Wall
Some of those one possession games in 2020 were games where the Bills were up two possessions late and then a garbage time score with less than 2 minutes left put it to one possession. The Raiders game, second Jets game and first Miami game followed that formula. The only three down to the wire games the team had in 2020 were the Rams, first Pats game and Cardinals. The Bills took 2 out of 3. -
Giants GM Dave Gettleman to retire on Monday
billsfan89 replied to Greg S's topic in The Stadium Wall
The Giants really need to move on from Joe Judge next and just do a proper rebuild. Bring in a GM and coach combination that are in step with one another preferable they go with a up and coming coordinator and hand them the keys to the team. They will have 2 top 10 picks that is an opportunity to really properly rebuild. -
This reeks of "old man yells at cloud". Younger coaches are being fairly successful. McVay has a winning record every season he coached the Rams including 4 playoff appearances and three playoff wins including a Super Bowl appearance and he has the team currently in a solid spot to make a run. Also it isn't like in the past there haven't been a ton of young coaches. John Madden was 32 when he was hired as the Raiders coach, Mike Shanahan was 35 when hired, Bill Cower 34, Mike Tomlin 34, Jon Gruden was also 34 when hired. It isn't a new trend to hire guys in their early to mid 30's as coaches.

Week 18: Jets at Bills - a W wins the AFC East!
billsfan89 replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall
Jets put up a good fight against Tampa Bay. The Bills can’t turn the ball over 3 times and expect to win. The Bills are by far the better team but they have to play a good game to win comfortably. A flat effort will result in a loss and a so/so effort is going to result in a close game with a small margin for error. I think this is going to be a blow for the Bills with a second straight division title on the line I think they come ready to play. -
Rashaad Penny would fit nicely with the Bills’ offense.
billsfan89 replied to Tipster19's topic in The Stadium Wall
I don't think Penny is any better than Moss, in fact I would rather have Moss who is good in pass protection and more reliable (along with having some upside being only a fairly healthy second year player) than Penny. With Singletary playing better as of late and Moss/Breida being backup caliber RB's I don't think the Bills need to bring in any RB's. What they have on the roster is good enough. The issue has been and will be O-line play. Look at Najee Harris with the Steelers. The Steelers brought in Harris to improve their run game while not fixing their o-line issues. Harris averaged 4 yards per carry less than the previous years leading running back Conner who averaged 4.3. Yes Harris has a larger work load but the point is that a better RB behind a flawed line isn't the way to go. -
All-22 Grades for Bills/Falcons (The Athletic)
billsfan89 replied to HappyDays's topic in The Stadium Wall
Edumonds has a good amount of positive games. I think people on here overhate on him. Yes he had a bad game against Atlanta but he has also had a lot of better performances this season. As far as Hughes he was coming off of a productive 2020 and is a locker room leader. It made sense to bring him back for one more season. Star played really well in the early part of the season. He looked like the lost weight was helping him but then he got Covid and banged up and he has not been the same. Butler has been a non-factor all season in my opinion one of the worst signings of the McD era. -
Lamar I would commit to. He is a good QB he just doesn’t have a ton of talent around him skill position wise. He has his limitations but he is dynamic in other ways. They have won with him fairly consistently. But Baker I let him play out on the 5th year option and see what he has. Thus far he has been very injury prone and inconsistent.

Josh - 16 games 2020 vs 2021 stats
billsfan89 replied to First Round Bust's topic in The Stadium Wall
Some regression in passing numbers but improvement in rushing. If this is what Josh is on an average year sign me up. However I think he only learns from this season. He broke out in 2020 and teams adjusted to that in 2021 and Josh still had a great season. But he needs to iron out the few bumps he had in 2021. Which I think he can and will in 2022. -
Living on the West Coast now and it is a mixed blessing. 10 am games are odd but prime time games getting done by 830ish instead of close to midnight is pretty solid.
-
The Bills winning by running the ball is a big confidence booster. Definitely should have been a blowout wire to wire but turnovers let Atlanta hang around. But they overcame Josh’s worst throwing game of the season and turned it into a comfortable 2 possession win. Clinching the playoffs and putting a second straight division title a home game win away.
-
He is coming back for one more season even if that happens. He signed a multi year contract extension in his mid forties haha!

I would say that 1st round picks have been mostly good. Groot hasn’t been bad for a rookie jury still out. Diggs was acquired primarily by a first round pick and that has paid off. Ed Oliver in my opinion is a very good player on this defense and I expect him to be a key cog in the defense going forward. Josh Allen was obviously a great first round pick and I know everyone like to pick on Edumonds but I think Edumonds has been a good player for the defense. Second round picks are another issue. 2018 they didn’t have one but Cody Ford has yet to pan out, AJ Epenesa has not done much and Boogie has been at best decent as a rookie role player. Hopefully the second round pick issue is more just bad luck than anything else.

This team is built for a DOME-Bills kill another narrative
billsfan89 replied to BuffaloBillyG's topic in The Stadium Wall
A good running game against a bad Falcons defense is not killing the idea that this team may not be able to run on consistently better defense or stop the run against better running offenses. -
Looking at McD’s record the past 5 years it is very impressive. Four playoff appearances in Five years, three double digit win seasons in a row, one division title (while being one win away from a second), a pair of playoff victories and the development of a young franchise QB. I am really trying to think of the last time a organizational turn around of this nature had occurred in the NFL. Maybe the Saints when Sean Payton and Brees came on board? The Saints were pretty hapless from 1993 to 2005. They had just one playoff season and were either bad or consistently under achieving in the Haslet era in the early to mid 2000’s. I can’t think of another more recent turn around of a team from being bad for a long time to a sustained run of success in the past 10ish years.
-
I wouldn’t hate some light form of a draft lottery in the NFL but I don’t think tanking is that big of an issue in the NFL that a draft lottery is necessary.
-
You can’t blame the Colts, they had no clue Luck who was proven and just 29 years old would retire after one season. They traded down picking up a pair of second round picks and got a great guard they thought would help protect a good young QB in his prime for the rest of his prime. It was the right move you just can only predict so much. Teams 1 to 5 have to feel like idiots.
-
I am not going to call him a bust just yet but it’s not looking good. I know there are a lot of vets and a recent 1st round pick ahead of him but he can’t crack this deep rotation it shows what the coaching staff thinks of him thus far. Still time to work on himself the rest of this season, the off-season and camp next season to try and figure it out. But this team needs to figure out AJ sooner rather than later.
