I think Mayfield is actually the perfect example of what I mean. He was not a bad QB in Cleveland, they just decided to move on because they have the worst owner in the NFL. And I think Mayfield himself would admit he wasn't really giving it his all early in his career. Not that he was especially lazy like say Jamarcus Russell was, but you didn't hear the stories of almost psychotic commitment to getting better like you heard with Allen or Mahomes or Brady. Did spending a year on the Panthers scout team turn his career around? Did Matt Rhule change the way he approached the position? Of course not. What happened is he put his head down and re-dedicated himself to his craft, then when opportunity knocked on a potential game winning drive for the Rams he was ready and seized his moment. Next thing you know Liam Cohen is getting the credit for "fixing" Baker Mayfield and gets a head coaching opportunity because they think he can "fix" Trevor Lawrence. Well, early returns on that aren't looking so great. The QB is going to have to fix himself. Nobody can do it for him. This conversation reminded me of a hilarious post I saw earlier:

Orioles "officially" eliminated from the playoffs. In reality the season was over in May. What a crap season of injuries and under achievement. Wait till next year! -

I think all players should wear visors, especially after a player had permanent eye damage from a stray yellow flag thrown from an official. Protect your face!

Incredibly contrary to Allen's growing tendency (on repeated display so far this season) of stepping up when there's an early lane (especially through the left side A or B gap) to buy time and to put 2nd and 3rd level defenders in conflict. He did it a TON vs Baltimore to my eye. He's just ELITE at avoiding pocket pressure (while still looking to throw) in ways I don't think we always appreciate fully. The OL is pretty good, but not nearly as good at pass pro as 17 makes them seem. Or if there's obvious pre-snap pressure coming, he'll do the opposite thing and adjust protections and routes to leave one blitzer/side unblocked and try to stand in there long enough to hit someone behind that vacated area. Burrow probably does that 2nd thing (standing in and delivering over/through diagnosed pressures, as you detailed) as well or better than Allen, but just isn't as big and durable (historically) as #17, so he pays the price in more impactful ways. I've seen him move dynamically UP into/past the pocket in some games, but it's not really his nature. He's got underrated feet that he should use a little more often against 3 and 4 man pass rushes.

Buffalo Rumblings is reporting that Josh will be wearing a helmet visor this week vs. Miami after he was hit on the nose Sunday. He was wearing the visor in practice today. Link

OMG, for years now, when ever people ask why I chose to be a Bills fan I say “because I’m a lifelong glutton for punishment”. Thats funny stuff! -
Any thoughts on Dorian Williams about to be starting again?

Yeah, luckily if you need a good game out of Josh and you’re putting the Dolphins in his crosshairs… that’s leaning heavily towards another offensive player of the week award incoming. -
I don’t disagree, it’s why I said Ben got too much credit and praise for “Goff” who only regressed in LA because their OL became a casualty of their spending and a trainwreck. Once Detroit built up the line and talent around him, Goff became the more the guy he was when he led LA to their first SB appearance of McVays tenure. I was surprised Ben took the job without Poles being fired whose been an awful GM. Nothing is worse for a HC than being saddled with a terrible FO, let alone a first time HC.

Ty Dunne so take with as much salt as you see fit, but sounds like Caleb doesn't want to be coached. https://www.golongtd.com/p/house-of-dysfunction-part-i-the-curious

Game week thread - Dolphins at Bills TNF

Fascinating to see Jones shading the guard and Walker shading the center here; how did the Jets then block this up? Did they double Jones, or Walker? Or neither? Did the defensive front shift into this alignment, possibly, based on offensive shift(s) and leverage to the sideline? You can see the Jets heavily aligned to the boundary side. I have no desire to be right, btw. Just really interested in the evolving DL personnel, usage, and alignments and techniques and whatnot. Nielsen is here specifically to get more out of this unit. Loved that hire. Hope it works out as the season progresses. -
I think Baker was always a gamer. The Browns looked for the shiny and went for Watson. Biggest mistake they could make. Baker had a shoulder injury the year that he looked bad. I'll throw Alex Smith in there as a guy that benefited from coaching IMO. He wasn't terrible but wasn't good until Harbaugh got there and made him better. Then Reid got him and made him even better. On the Harbaugh topic, I think thus far Herbert has looked a lot better and looks like he has some heart now. Thats coaching.

I personally love the way he uses everybody at his disposal. At some point, you will see every WR, RB, and TE out on the field, and I think this is a genius way of keeping everybody involved and feeling that they are a part of the Offense. I'm sure Brady tells these guys like Hawes, Shavers, Elijah Moore, Ty Johnson: These are the plays you are going to be in during the game, I want you to eat, sleep, and breathe these plays all week, and when they are called, I know you will execute your responsibilities on these plays flawlessly. I think that aspect of Brady's Offensive Scheme is just great.
-
I hope so. I get the sense that Brady loves having 3 versatile TEs (plus Gilliam), and I think we’ll start seeing some real creativity with these guys as the season goes on. I think it gives us a lot of ways to really effectively attack a defense.

Ben Johnson?? Ben Johnson?? LOL
Richard Noggin replied to BringBackFergy's topic in The Stadium Wall
I don't entirely disagree with your "unpopular opinion." The coaching DEFINITELY matters a TON, as does surrounding talent, but I agree that a QB prospect's own drive and ability to process criticism and failure with humility, while also maintaining the confidence necessary to perform under duress, is/are the most essential component(s). It's a rare combination of factors that coalesce to allow a young QB to improve and excel in the NFL. Caleb Williams appears to have some REALLY bad tendencies to hold the ball and to throw from bad bases too often. His insane arm talent is probably holding him back, in that he can sometimes make the impressive, improvisational, off-platform throws, and that skill (along with his scrambling) has got him to this point in his career already. So he seems aloof or resistant to change. There is reporting to back up this perspective, if you find that reporting compelling. Very interested in where the Bears season goes from here. I have a lot of respect for Ben Johnson's acumen and aggression, and have at times wished for him to replace McD. Like a Dungy-to-Gruden type of transition. -

Lol...maybe if Dak stays healthy he will pass him on the turnover list Its really remarkable how Allen first fixed his completion percentage and then cut his turnovers without sacrificing his scoring output! Best QB and best player in the league!!!
