Does there need to be a rethinking of the basic D?
Fleezoid replied to oldmanfan's topic in The Stadium Wall
I've been completely on the fence with respect to McDermott. I've thought, at least he has this team competitive every year. At the same time, I can also see the criticism about the lack of playoff success. And I've always been critical of his soft defensive stance. But after last night, and I know it's just preseason, but I'm absolutely leaning toward McDermott's defensive philosophy is not getting it done. They can't keep letting teams stay on the field and burn clock. -
KAMALA INTERVIEWS! Goes as badly as you’d expect

It was man coverage, they were in cover 1 on that play
-
He wasn't in man. The receiver was his guy within the zone but he got beat because he got his spacing wrong to start with, read the play late and reacted late. Sure the WR then ran away from him because that's a hard match up.... but if he gets his fundamentals right he is in position make the tackle there for a 4-6 yard gain.

This epitomizes our Defensive philosophy so perfectly. It's sad, but we all know it's true. -
It's disappointing to be sure, but I believe you can't judge a draft class for five years. That gives you time to see who gets an extension, traded, etc.

Good Night / Bad Night - Pre-season Game 2
MikePJ76 replied to GunnerBill's topic in The Stadium Wall
I am watching the all 22 at the moment and I have to say the bishop stuff is being blown way out of proportion because of one play where not for nothing but hamlin should have made the tackle and bishop shouldn't be playing man to man with wr. anyway, Carter blew up the screen on the second drive, he won off the snap and then recognized it was a screen and got in the way and forced campbell to throw it into the ground. The bills looked like they were in cover 1 and depending on the formation just sending whichever safety 15 to 20 yards deep....in the first three drives anyway. -
He was strong safety last night. Damar was playing the free. He still sucked. He had one excellent play in Houston and people presume that indicative of his overall performance. It wasn't.

Good Night / Bad Night - Pre-season Game 2
TFBillsfan replied to GunnerBill's topic in The Stadium Wall
This game is difficult to truly assess as the vast majority of players won’t be on the team and the others will see limited playing time in the regular season. As others have stated, Bishop and Damar are major liabilities. I’ve seen more from Hancock in two preseason games than I’ve seen from either of them in totality. Beane needs to get on the phone immediately! DL hasn’t shown any improvement in getting to the QB. We’ve given up over 70 pts in two games and the D has generated TWO sacks! TWO! Our DL continues to get stonewalled far too often and guys struggle to beat their man one on one.   Backup QB is woeful. Mitch, White and Buchele all look like PS players at best. Unfortunately, last night highlighted numerous negatives for players fighting for a roster spot. -
No he wasn’t. While I don't hold a ton of value in PFF, if they have you ranked as the 5th worst dlineman to take a snap in the league, you have some work to do. However the 2024 draft class, looks pretty good compared to the 2024 free agent class.

Preseason Week 2 Bills at Bears - Game thread
CincyBillsFan replied to HappyDays's topic in The Stadium Wall
As for Bishop let's see how the next 3 weeks of practice go. If he's able to practice fully he will be fine for opening day and I suspect you will see that jump in performance the Bills are expecting. If he can't practice fully and misses multiple practices then we have a big problem on our hands. No point in worrying about what might happen until it does happen. -
Elijah Moore.......I think he is trending toward not making the roster
Mat68 replied to Special K's topic in The Stadium Wall
But Moore was included in this choice. If you’re playing with 2nd and 3rd strings you are considered as 2nd and 3rd string. Top 4 Coleman Shakir Palmer and Samuel. Moore has done nothing to leap frog Samuel. Imo top you dont need special teams ability in the top 4 after that you do. I have Shavers solid at wr 5. Question do you keep 6? Instead of Codrington Shenualt or Hamler for return duties. I dont want Codrington on the roster. I think Moore is firmly on the bubble. I havent seen anything that warrants him on the roster over Samuel. After that he doesnt offer anything to special teams to warrant a role. Looking at the financials cutting Samuel is pricey. Moore has not warranted that kind of investment. -
Rule Questions (Tuck/Intentional Grounding)
eSJayDee replied to co_springs_billsfan's topic in The Stadium Wall
In this case, the ball went backwards, so it's a lateral, not a pass. So any tuck rule is not applicable. You do have a valid point that when they abort a forward throw & it goes straight in the ground near them there likely isn't a receiver in the area & if the throw was not altered by contact w/ a defender, I think it should be grounding but I don't recall it ever being called (though throwing into the ground doesn't occur frequently). (ie refs aren't supposed to interpret intent, ie like when a receiver runs a wrong route) -
Preseason Week 2 Bills at Bears - Game thread
Bruffalo replied to HappyDays's topic in The Stadium Wall
I got to think the parade of injuries through camp have got to be a factor in resting all of the starters. Maybe he saw how aggressive the Bears were in practice and thought "yeah not gonna risk that". I'm not particularly concerned at the Bills' performance last night, but as a fan it sucks to watch your team look like hot dogwater out there. I think the Bears and Ben Johnson came in with something to prove and needed to get Chicago hyped up. It's almost like they had completely different ideas of what they wanted to get out of a preseason game. -
Does there need to be a rethinking of the basic D?
finn replied to oldmanfan's topic in The Stadium Wall
Agree. And the only real difference this year is that Bosa replaced Von Miller. To avoid KC scoring 34 points AGAIN in January, the Bills defense needed a radical overhaul, not a tweak. The best pass rush in the world won't get home with this secondary, especially with its lack of depth. It's like Beane and McDermott are on different pages. Beane wants more pressure so loads up on the D-line, only to be thwarted by McDermott, who instructs his safeties to let the receivers catch the ball because maybe they'll drop it or a penalty will negate the play. Clap clap. Man, I would love to see an aggressive philosophy. Yes, they'll get burned, but they'll also sack the QB. The drip drip drip of third-and-long completions is just agony. Plus, it keeps the best QB in the league on the bench. Even Pegula won't keep McDermott after a repeat of last year, right? (Right?) -
