I’ve followed these boards for a long time but hardly ever post.  However, at this time I just feel a push to give my opinion on a controversial subject – who plays on the D, and can it develop into a championship unit.  I feel that we potentially have a very strong defense. If all goes well (a major hope on my part) I believe that we could have a defense, coupled with a strong offense, to carry us a long way in the playoffs.

This is what I’d like to see within, more or less, the following 3 or 4 weeks.

Defensive ends

Starters …Joey Bosa – Greg Rousseau; Backups...A. J. Epenesa – Michael Hoecht

Defensive tackles

Starters…Ed Oliver – Deone Walker; Backups...DaQuan Jones – Larry Ogunjobi

Linebackers

Starters...Terrel Bernard –Matt Milano; Backups...Dorian Wiiliams – Shaq Thompson

Slot

Starter…Tyron Johnson – Backup - Cam Lewis

Corners

Starters…Maxwell Hairston – Christian Benford…Backups...Tre White - Cam Lewis

Safeties

Starters…Cole Bishop – Jordan Hancock… Backups...Jordan Poyer – Taylor Rapp

If the '85 Bears defense was called by Bobby Babich, they would have been fortunate to make the Wild Card round.

Yeah on paper they look like a middle of the pack defense.

And no 'Super Bowl Shuffle'.  Just a modest team meal, with meager portions. 😢

I like it - only question is will Hoecht play End? I heard he may play a LB role and blitz from there.

Also - Hopefully Hancock is good and Max can return and be good.

If that happens, we may have a chance.

The problem with the defense is that no one is all that good. We need to pray the Kentucky boys show out because how those 2 develop over the course of the 3 months could really determine how the is season goes defensively

I agree that we have some talent, and could be much improved on paper. But McD's 20yr old defensive scheme that is built on "soft zone" coverage will still crap the bed against any capable offense.

The Defense might come out & look amazing this week vs Andy Dalton & a middling offense, but when we play Mahomes the next week, it'll look like he's playing 7-on-7 vs our coverage.

Need to get bigger and more physical. I've been saying this for years. Then we need to add some speed in the secondary.  I miss those Wade Phillips' D's. Cut AJE. He can't beat most TE's.

Shaq Thompson is playing the best among all players on defense. He should be starting even if it means over Milano or Bernard

100%

Milano & Bernard have looked pretty bad this year

Wade Philips walks in the building with the exact players we have and we are a top 10 unit by December. It’s not the players…it’s the zone and it’s the nickel

Might be time for Lewis to step in for Taron.

I was absolutely flamed (by a mod nonetheless) for saying this 3 weeks ago. Tarron Johnson isn’t good. We can’t stop the run because we insist on staying in the nickel defense but we can’t stop

the pass because our nickel defense sucks. What is the point? Put 3 LBs on the field.  This isn’t working. If you need 7 on the field, move him to safety

The DLine is pretty damn good. Behind them, not so much. But a good DLine can make everyone better. Just like the OL can. The 2 new guys will hopefully make a real impact.

That is when they are 100% healthy, which never happens, and it still not that great of a lineup. The DL rotation looks solid, but not spectacular, and it's by far the best unit. And who knows how well the three "new guys" are actually going to play.

Of course they "could be good", but odds are they won't be much better than they already are.

IMHO the D needs to play more aggressive overall and get off the field faster- one way or another.  Soft-squelching the opposing O just leads to 3rd downs that we suck at anyways.

Our offense can respond in kind if they score quick, and our defensive players will be less worn out vs. forcing repeated 12 play drives.

More often than not Theyre immediately back on the field as of late. Hard to not give up drives when you’re always out there.

AJ has been the least of our issues and I am no fan of his. I hated the draft pick and extension.

The DL has Top 10 potential (I think the pass rush numbers already show this even with the injuries) and if Benford returns to form with Hairston finding his footing before the postseason, that’s how we get to the playoffs with a Defense that can win a Super Bowl without needing Josh Allen & the Offense to be lights out.

I do agree that group has potential.

They desperately need the linebackers to find some semblance of health and for Hairston/Benford to be an average to above average tandem on the outside .. which isn’t asking a ton, even with the missed time, of a RD1 CB and newly paid CB.   I’m not expecting them to be Gonzalez & Davis this year, but that’s an insane level of investment to not have competent corner play by the time the playoffs roll around.
