im not going to sit here and sh-t on Elam.  clearly something was wrong here for him to be a 1st round talent and play so badly.  his confidence is probably a bit fragile.  he appears to be playing like hes scared of making mistakes.  im taking a guess here,  but he probably just needs to go out there and play.  stay out of his own head for a bit. thinking too much can lead to hesitation and second guessing.  just what it looks like to me.  wish him well.

Brown had one catch late in the game, for a crucial first down.  I don't know whether he was Elam's responsibility.  I also don't know if Elam was covering Brown all game long.  Brown is the Eagles' best WR so if the Cowboys were moving their CBs around they probably put their best CB on Brown.

I don't want speculation. I haven't done film study but I was told he covered brown. It's only one game, we'll see how he does. I catch for brown is a bad night for him.

because they don't understand the game. Lots of hot air out there... If a db is 10 yards off the LOS, that is where the coach expects him to be.

That said, Elam was not great, but looked more competent out there than he did in our scheme and was decent.

You're definitely given some lee-way on where you line up as a corner.  But usually that far off the LOS is either - over man without help like a single high or blitz, or cover 3 and cover 4 where you're expected to find the deep crossers.  It isn't a bad thing to line up off as well, playing press man for an entire game is a recipe for big plays which.. most teams try to avoid.  If i know i need to stay deep behind a player whos faster than me... why would i line up closer to him?

Dallas gave up like 150 yards, they gave up 4 catches to the Eagles two top WRs. Some would say the DBs had a pretty good game but Bills fans who were so happy to let Elam go want to put him down. Hahaha! Seems a bit bitter because they probably thought he’d be a disaster

I'm sorry, but I'm not sure we all watched the same game.  Hurts constantly didn't like what he was seeing, and looked to tuck and run all night.  AJ Brown didn't even have a target until late in the 4th quarter.

He did get beat on the long pass down the seam, and do agree that his awareness could've been better, but where are the safety's on that play?

It's one thing to be on the boundary with no safety help, because you have the sideline to aid you.  Down the seam, with no safety help, that's almost an automatic completion.

He didn't travel. He covered who was across from him. For instance he was burned on a 50+ yard reception last night and that wasn't Brown he was covering.

More obsession with former players from this board.

Can we move on?

While I can appreciate the “he’s dead to me” attitude, I have to admit I was super interested in how he looked and I’d bet my house that the Bills Defensive Back Coaches were watching closely too.

If the coaches that made Damar Hamlin, Levi Wallace, and Dane Jackson look like serviceable starters have dumped you for a day three flyer then I don't have high hopes for a career revival.

I expect he's going to look worse and worse as the season goes on when teams get game film on him.

Elam looked to me like a replacement level CB2. Not a massive liability but still someone you're always looking to upgrade. Kind of like Damar Hamlin for us. Unfortunately the worst game of his career came in the AFCCG so I don't blame us for moving on from him. I don't think our coaches did a good job preparing him for that game or calling plays that matched his skillset. I'm not afraid that we traded a secret superstar but he is a better player than that godawful performance.

I apologize if this is talked about in another thread, however, I thought Elam showed his true colors last night and at times, even demonstrated timidity which was probably driven by his fear of making a mistake. What say you?

Thought he played very well as CB2. One big play given up, otherwise solid. Would be thrilled if Bills CB2 plays this well Sunday. Hard to phantom the Bills and he couldn’t make it work during his tenure here.

He's a great athlete that has little in the way of football instincts. Playing time can help with that.

Part of the problem in Buffalo is he barely played.  I didn't fault him for his play in the championship game.  I put that one on management.

No obsession. A reasonable discussion about a wasted #1 pick at a position of need. And a player who immediately starts for an NFL team against last year’s SB champs. Who then plays a decent game.

Who cares?

I kind of care because it's a data point that may tell us something about the Bills' coaches.  If Elam balls out with another team, I'll wonder if the Bills coaching staff didn't coach and mentor him correctly.

If this is the one and only game that people are going to talk about Elam this entire season, then I will believe that there is no obsession.
