Could be Beane doesn’t believe in paying a running back a big contract. Schoen is from that GM tree and let Saquon walk.

From what I can tell, Beane and his team have a plan for what every position it worth and they try to stick to that.

Safety is an example, and a position they view like RB. Even with 2 All-Pro Safeties, they never got more than $10M/yr. Even with all the squawking they and their wives did in social media, and the short term deals that they renegotiated.

Same with MLB. Not a premium position. Bernard gets $10M/yr.

I feel like I'm going crazy here. DO NOT PAY THIS GUY!! Let him play it out this season and then let him walk out the door and draft his replacement. Or ideally, if you find a dumb team who'd give up a 2nd or 3rd rounder for him, deal him today and I'll drive him to the airport myself.

You have the best QB in the game and a strong offensive line. Any decent RB can fill the void.

I feel conflicted.   I understand the player position,  yet find it hard to feel any sort of sympathy for a millionaire.  Sometimes I don't think they realize the privilege they have.

I think if you can put yourself in Cook's shoes or Beane's shoes it is easy to see why there is conflict and a resolution might not be easy.  Honestly not sure the Bills want to pay his market value.

Now do the Billionaire owners who contribute nothing.

You don’t have to feel sympathy, but realize it’s all relative. He is trying to make money compared to his contemporaries, just like we all do. If he takes less, then the next team tries to make their guy take less, and so on…remember, it’s not Cook’s (or any players) job to make the money for within the salary cap-that’s up to the front office, which is also full of guys who are paid a lot of money (hundreds of thousands to millions) to do their job well

Be careful what you wish for. He's the only truely explosive skill player on the offense (Allen aside of course). We don't have a chance at the end of the KC game without his 4th down play. Any decent RB doesn't make that play and the threat of Cook certainly helps the passing game. Now, we have a comparable signing 3/$33m so expect and extension shortly

I don't have any dispute with Cook's attributes that Simms detailed, but he's wrong about the leverage. The Bills hold all of the cards at this point.

Once the season ends that leverage shifts to Cook.

Probably the best point being made by people arguing against a big contract is the 2 down role. Here is the top 10. All 10 are 3 down backs besides Montgomery and Montgomery can be, they just have the rotation. Perhaps this angle is more top of mind for the Bills than one would think.

At best Josh Jacobs is comparable and I bet the Bills might even do that.  Pretty sure Cook isn't settling for less than 15 million.  He thinks he is better than Kamara and Taylor lol

“Hold In” is BS.  Next CBA needs to address this.  Make it equivalent to a “hold out” with the same fines.

Sure, if the owners want to chip in another 1-2% of revenue.

Why?   Players are under contract.  If you are not doing what is required, you deserve to be fined/suspended.

No it isn't superstar to scrub. It's top 10 back to borderline starting talent. It's going back from having someone who can make difference making plays there to the Singletary / Moss era where your running back is "fine." And we simply don't have the explosiveness in the pass game right now that we had back then as a counterbalance.

ESPN didn't have Cook as a top 10 back in the league

After Jacobs, those players all have a top 66 pick rookie contract player waiting in the wings (or starting) except for broken down 29 year old Joe Mixon.

Will probably require that level of investment to replace Cook next year at least.

Two points. I didn't listen to the podcast, I just read the short article so I don't know what Simms said. Did he actually say Cook has leverage or did the headline just say that he said that? Simms didn't write the headline.

Secondly, once the season starts, Cook holds some leverage but still not that much. Of course he can withhold his services which affects the Bills if Johnson, Davis, and whoever they call up in Cook's absence don't do very well. Back in the 90s, Emmitt Smith held out on the Cowgirls for two games. When they lost both, Jerry signed him. However, Cook would get hefty fines and if he doesn't show up by a certain date (too lazy to look up which game number), he doesn't earn a year of eligibility so he wouldn't be a free agent next year.

From my perspective, the Bills hold most of the leverage.

Neither has Cook. But they said a lot more on social media.

You said "next CBA needs to address this". If the owners think they are going to gain verbiage that further restricts the workforce, they need to give something too.

1st year stats for Cook and Davis are almost the same. Can Ray improve as quickly as Cook?  On this team, why not? Let Cook sit or come back without an attitude.  His first year attitude was not impressive.  struck me as kinda dumb. His agent and brother will ultimately decide.
