He's had known health issues for a while (toes already amputated, etc). I think it was always assumed that once his kids were done, he wouldnt coach much longer. This pretty much wraps that up.

Say what you will about the guy but he stuck it out and battled through a lot of health issues in order to help get his kids as much college football spotlight and into the NFL. Good dad.

Didn't he just sign a 5 year extension?

He plans on coaching next year and they will supposedly have a portable toilet nearby,  lets see how it works out.

My dad had bladder cancer. Caught it really early after noticing blood in his urine one time and only one time. Doctor told him that bladder cancer is luckily one of the easier to treat but cancer is scary.

Probably. Gotta at least go through the motions if you arent going to actively recruit and just lean on "Deion is here" to draw players in.

Who knows, maybe he does stick it out a few more years.

He's had a pretty brutal run of health issues, especially for a guy in such good shape with every financial advantage and access to top tier medical personnel.

Typically having great genetics in one area usually means not so good in other areas...

The story said his bladder was removed. So that means he has one or two ileal conduits that drain his kidneys to a bag(s) on his abdomen. That sucks. Many bladder cancers can be treated with just removing the tumor from inside the bladder.  If they removed his bladder that means the tumor had invaded the bladder wall/muscle. Hopefully it has not metastasis to bone.

Bladder cancer is much much more common in smokers. Dont know id he was a smoker or not. There is also a familial predisposition for bladder cancer as well.

I don’t think that is the repair that Sanders had. Based on his interview with yahoo sports, he has an internal bladder fashioned from small intestines. No bag, but needs to void frequently, and is somewhat incontinent.

I have had bladder cancer stage 3 small carcinoma, it was in a diverticulum (out-pouching) so they removed that part of my bladder and then went through chemo...that was 6 years ago.. luckily it was "encapsulated" it hadnt spread... pretty common in guys over 50.  I get checked every 3 months... had 2 small sarcomas show up last year so now I go for immuno therapy every 6 months totaling 3 years... 2 years left and nothing has shown since... thank God... it was detected because I had blood in my urine and got checked..   Bladder cancer is one of the most treatable cancers there is...

can't they fashion an artificial bladder to replace his? I thought they did that for Keith Richards' wife.

They can out of a pigs bladder or in Deion's case out of part of his small intestine... I was told this is what they'd do for me if it ever came back

I am no medical professional but sometimes they will take out the diseased organ first and then go back with a fix later.

I watched some of the thing and they were really concerned on the cancer spreading so it seemed like if they could get out the bladder and he was cancer free that was a very good step one. What happens from here who knows, I myself thought you could create some form of a replacement.

EDIT: Just read they did make a new bladder with the intestine. Apparently it takes 12-18 months for patients to successfully be able to hold their pee on their own control and it is 90% success rate. So hopefully he will be able to get some normalcy back.

He was somewhat of a loud mouth, but extremely talented in his day, and certainly never wish ill will on someone, especially the big C.  My dad survived three bouts of it, and turns 95 next month, but my mom wasn't so lucky.   I certainly hope he is on the way to a successful recovery.

He sounds like he was pretty tough continuing to coach with these multiple issues for the benefit of his son.  I’ll always respect that in him.
