I look at the Florida (Sarasota) listings on an almost daily basis. It’s just a hobby more than anything, but inventory is MUCH higher than 1-2 years ago. Things that never flooded got flooded last year with back to back hurricanes , so that may be part of it. It’s far too soon for us to act in any way with so many uncertainties, but it’s nice to see things cool off some. It was INSANE for a while, and they still have spec builders hoping to find suckers to pay a million too much for houses in areas that don’t yet support those values. But they keep advertising hoping to find that one cash buyer to help set a new market. Quote

PastaJoe Posted July 16 Posted July 16 In the US I’d choose Hawaii, and Maui in particular. It’s more laid back and tranquil than Oahu, and has great beaches with gentle waves. If international I’d say Amsterdam, Netherlands. The canals throughout the central city are so unique and the architecture is beautiful. Quote
BarleyNY Posted July 16 Posted July 16 I am in the process of making this decision. I appreciate all the info. It will almost certainly be a split between two locations. Kids are both in college and their decisions on where to live will probably impact mine. 1 Quote
boater Posted July 16 Posted July 16 Actually, I'm pretty fond of WNY where I live now. However, when I reach my mid-70's snow removal tasks will be on my forbidden list. I will have to weigh my options then--it will be either a Senior's apartment in WNY, or moving to a small house in Virginia. I've lived in VA before. Not too hot, not too cold. I really like it. On the negative side, it would cost me about $18k more a year to live there than WNY. A $250K house in WNY is $400K in VA. Off the wall retirement spot: Portugal. I hear great things about the place. 2 Quote
bills_fan Posted July 16 Posted July 16 Thought a lot about this and my plan is Lake George. Close to skiing (planning to ski 50-60 days per year), beautiful in all the seasons, low taxes and much less government nonsense, housing (thats not directly on the lake) is reasonably priced, close to NYC where I can work part-time and my kids will likely be. Kinda ticks all the boxes for me. 3 Quote
billsfanmiamioh Posted July 17 Posted July 17 Without getting into too much detail, we’ve learned the hard way that life can throw you a rude awaking for some of the plans you’ve dreamt up for later in life. We’ve made the mutual decision to retire as soon as we can, and we should be able to in 13-15 years at a relatively “young” age. Doesn’t mean we’d necessarily be done working, it would just be totally on our terms (consulting, owning a business, etc) We’ll definitely be part of the split time / combo group and already have 2 in place. We’re very well established with friends and family in Columbus OH so we’ll always have something here even if it means downsizing to a condo or something. Our other main spot will be Whitefish, MT. We bought a condo there just over 4 years ago and do the Airbnb / short term rental thing. It generally pays for itself and we already get out there 4-6 times a year to ski in the winter, hike in the summer and sometimes do some work and just enjoy the small town vibes and great mom & pop small businesses in spring or fall. It’s truly a breathtaking area. We just got back from a short weekend trip and had an amazing time. We actually ran into and chatted with Lindy Ruff for the second straight summer, as he has a place there (probably much nicer than our 2 bed / 2 bath 1000 sq ft condo 😂) We will follow our son to some extent as he’s our only child so we’d get something nearby depending on where that is. Also depending on what that looks like, we’d maybe get something small in a warm/ beach climate of Florida or Carolina’s. Fun to think about it all, and no matter how it shakes out for anyone on this thread, I hope all are able to enjoy some form of their vision for a meaningful amount of time! 1 Quote

We went to Sedona in 2022, loved it do much, we returned 2 years later with 2 other couples who also love it! There are so many places to see, hiking trails (from walking to true hiking), and great restaurants, though not too many so reservations should be made well in advance, as we learned the first time. There is a phenomenon called energy vortexes. I didn't believe it until we fell it. My wife has pain in her feet (from sports) and while there - she didn't feel that, and we hiked daily. The four best known Sedona vortexes are found at Airport Mesa, Cathedral Rock, Bell Rock and Boynton Canyon — each radiating its own particular energy. Neighboring towns of Jerome, Prescott, Cottonwood are nice, too. Be careful to stay on the trails when hiking, but visiting in March means they are still underground. We visited Grand Canyon, too and words cannot describe how awesome it is. Quote
BarleyNY Posted July 17 Posted July 17 Anyone ever been to San Felipe, Baja, Mexico? My dad offered me a plot there that he isn’t going to use and cost to build (at California code) is very inexpensive compared to the US. I intend to visit this winter, but would welcome any insight. I wouldn’t spend summers there, but it seems like it might be a low key place to chill in winters. Quote

Did Glen Canyon dam, couple days at the South Rim then headed to Sedona for a few nights. We stayed at Enchantment Resort and did the nearby hike to the Boynton Canyon vortex. It’s a very unique / powerful feeling. Hard to describe. 1 Quote
UConn James Posted July 18 Posted July 18 Gonna take a lot for me to leave the Quiet Corner and lakefront property life in CT, but the taxes and COL is only ratcheting up here. I don’t want to leave, but eventually may have to. Visited East Tennessee, Knoxville area near the Smoky Mountains once and boy it is BEAUTIFUL there. Still four seasons but with a shorter duration of winter. People seemed very friendly… or at least friendlier than here in the northeast (which, frankly, isn’t difficult to do). Would absolutely need a pool and great air conditioning system down there for the summer (my least favorite season). Quote
Whites Bay Posted July 19 Posted July 19 Kind of a boring thing to consider, but for those of you looking to purchase a retirement place, it would make sense to consider the school district. You'd probably want the lousiest underfunded crap show you can find. School taxes have to be factored in when you don't have kids in the system. Quote
