That's really sad...it is crazy how much of a toll football takes on these athletes as the years go on, even for younger guys like Brees.

He said if he wants to play catch with his kids in the backyard, he has to throw with his left hand because his right arm "no longer works".

Said he didn't want to retire but he was left no other choice and if he could still be out there playing he would be.

Also said the Dolphins medical team was spot on in their assessment of his injuries but that the surgeon gave him a window of time that allowed him to still play with the surgery he did.

One of my favorite QBs of all time. I was in elementary school and I would watch Purdue games on Saturdays just to see him. Was so bummed when he lost the Rose Bowl.

2009 Super Bowl is still probably my favorite, until the Bills finally get there’s. I know they get paid a lot of money, but it’s sad to hear people you think of as iron men have so many complications after their playing days.

Agree this is an unfortunate outcome. But anyone else find that picture/caption unintentionally hilarious? Like they are right to the point in that.

Great QB. One of my favorite to watch back in that era where the Bills had no QB and you just watched these guys like Drew Brees and Peyton Manning and just wished the Bills had somebody like them.

As a married guy, I understand.

Step 1. Don't be ugly.

Step 2. If ugly, be a generous lover.

Step 3. If 1 and 2 don't work. Hope your arms are working.

I really like the guy and he was a heck of a QB. His accuracy was unreal.

I hope he gets a shoulder replacement and gets with a good neurosurgeon and get the arm functioning again.

Somewhat related, we're running a version of the offense he ran in New Orleans.  I would love to see Josh put up somewhat similar stats. ( modified of course because Brees played in a dome. But a 5000 yard season would be awesome)

This seems weird. Poster above talking about shoulder replacement and Brees with a presumably unlimited budget - why has this not happened yet? Must be able to get it basically functional surely?

My guess is nerve damage so any surgery likely involves neck/spine in addition to the arthritis of bones, damaged tendons and ligaments, etc.

Also this doesn't meet the threshold for me to consider it "heartbreaking".  It's sad but cmon, guy made 270M, won a super bowl and SB MVP, and is going to be in the HOF.  I'd trade the use of my right arm for the bills to do that, and i don't even play for them.
