Ron Rivera Says Commanders Are 'Ready To Go' vs. 'Elite' Bills

Commanders head coach Ron Rivera noted the task at hand in facing the Bills and the magnitude of facing a team of their caliber.

“Pretty big. To me, I mean, it really is," Rivera said. "They're one of the elite teams in the AFC. I know they're 1-1, but records don't mean anything in this situation. This is one of the elite teams coming in and we've got to gear up, we've got to practice, prepare, get ourselves ready to go, and give us a great opportunity to see where we stand.”

The Commanders have shown signs of turning the corner through their first two games of the season after coming back in the second half to beat the Arizona Cardinals 20-16 on Sept. 10 and the Denver Broncos 35-33 on Sunday. Sam Howell had the best performance of his young career, completing 27 of 39 passes for 299 yards and two touchdowns. Brian Robinson Jr. also broke out in a big way against the Broncos with a career-high 129 total yards and two rushing touchdowns.

“I think it's an opportunity for us to establish who we are and who we can be," Rivera said. "This is a very good measuring stick. What they've done for the last four or five years, especially with the young quarterback [Josh Allen] now he's coming into his own."

SB Nation Reacts: A Dorsey of a different color finds approval with Bills Mafia

Perhaps unfairly, Buffalo Bills (-6.5)offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey has found himself at the center of criticism concerning the team’s offensive production. As a first-time OC during the 2022 NFL season, Dorsey put together an impressive playbook that many believed borrowed heavily from Brian Daboll.

Buffalo’s offense finished fourth overall last season, yet a large group of fans disapproved of Dorsey, and the idea of moving forward with him — that he was part of a concern the team was wasting quarterback Josh Allen’s best years.

Allen under Daboll in 2021:

409-of-646 (63.3%) for 4,407 yards (259.2 ypg). 6.8 yards per attempt

36TDs (5.6 TD%), 16 INTs (2.3 INT%)

QB rating 92.2, QBR 60.7

Allen under Dorsey in 2022

359-of-567 (63.3%), for 4,283 yards (267.2 ypg). 7.6 yards per attempt

35 TDs (6.2 TD%), 15 INTs (2.5 INT%)

QB rating 96.6, QBR 73.4

Grading Ken Dorsey? What are fans basing those grades on? Fans are clueless when it comes to evaluating a coordinator. Stupid poll.

This is almost deserving of its own thread... or the resurrection of an earlier Dorsey thread.

Bottom line, many people make judgements and then have difficulty changing their minds.

It's often the case that accomplished professionals change and grow but the perception of them doesn't.

The problem with those stats though:

Dorsey peaked in September last year , and the offence seemed to get worse as the season went on.

Daboll and Josh peaked in January when it mattered most.

I for one think Dorsey is “ok” and I’m not calling for his head.

But the next big step for him is to show he can execute a high flying offence against good DCs when it matters most. (January)

I think the Bills will win, but when I go to the casino tonight, I will likely put money on the Commanders, and take the points…I predict a low, one score difference game, in bad weather- similar to the Ravens game last year…👍

I did something similar for the opener.  I was nervous so I placed an emotional hedge bet.  I was basically willing to pay $100 for a Bills victory.  So I put $100 on the underdog Jets straight up to win.  I was pissed about the loss, but in the end that gut punch loss on MNF infused some good $ into my Bet MGM account for the next few weeks. I'm not doing this for the Commanders game.

I like that the Bills started Murray last game. He presents a whole different problem than the one  Cook does. It also keeps the other team guessing what's going to happen going forward. Again, if there's a lot of rain, and I think there will be, the power running game is going to be important.

I think cook got the first series.

Then they went to Murray for the 2nd and 3rd series I believe?

Then they went back to Cook for the most part

Depends on how wet the field is. Guys like Cook can break ankles the way he can cut and accelerate on a dry field. On a wet field the bigger backs can just hit there gap and power through. Don't discount passes to the backs either. Going to be a fun game to watch. I think Josh is up to the challenge and he's built some confidence with those quick passes. The Bills will be looking to take away the strength of that Washington defense which is their Dline.

I still think Cook gets the lions share of the snaps. He's been pretty good so far. He could do well if he doesn't loose his footing on a wet field. He's earned it.

The Bills charter plane landed shortly after 3.  It was scheduled for BWI but saw on the flight radar app it ended up landing at Dulles Airport out in Virginia.  I imagine weather had something to do with that.  Dulles is more of a hike to FedEx field than from BWI but both are pretty far out.  maybe the team is staying in DC where the nice hotels are.
