Cory Trice, CB Purdue-Great Measurables, excellent performance. No discussion so far. Any opinions?

We are living in a world where we may be drafting DI Keeanu Benton in the second round, so I am depressed about how we negotiate through rounds 1 & 2, so looking for some potential gems past the second round.  One player who has not been discussed on this board is Cory Trice, CB Purdue.  He seems to be a press coverage specialist, with this blurb from PFF:

"Trice is built like a linebacker who got kicked out to cornerback. He beats up opposing receivers in press coverage, allowing only one catch on 88 press snaps this past season."

He is fast:

Here are his overall stats:

The obligatory youtube highlight reel:

Any expert opinions available?

  • Chaos changed the title to Cory Trice, CB Purdue-Great Measurables, excellent performance. No discussion so far. Any opinions?

Good eyes, great instincts and an an excellent nose for the ball. If he can cover anybody at the NFL level, I'll eat my hat.

He'll probably make a pretty good pro safety eventually. 🤷‍♂️

4.47 is nothing to sneeze at. And he stats says he is a shut down corner, against the Big Ten teams he played against. But I have no idea how that translates to the NFL.  Some college players seem good at football. Some college players test well in the measureables. Fewer are good at both.  I have seen him projected as low as 88 in the draft and in the 200's+ plus, so opinions are clearly mixed.

That settles it. McBean will draft him in the 2nd.

why the need to transition to safety?   too short for CB?

No he is plenty tall enough. It is is fluidity for me. Don't like his hips. Think he is more suited to safety where he can face the play and let his acceleration and closing speed take him to the ball than corner where he has to flip his hips and follow a receiver downfield while also getting his head around. I think just let him play centre field where he can see it happening.

We could use a safety.  Will Cory Trice make it to the 4th or 5th round?

Poyer, Hyde  and Rapp. Hamlin,Anderson, Mayden. Maybe even Lewis and  Benford.  How bad do the Bills really need a safety this year? As with DT,I'm not overly concerned with expiring contracts because Beane is a master of the 1-year deal

I know Hamlin said he intends to play, but I don’t think they should count on that.

If Rapp pans out, that could give them a a potential heir apparent to Poyer or Hyde, both of whom are nearing the end and Hyde is a FA after this year.  Unless they are moving Benford (or Tre White) to S, they need another young S candidate.  Doesn’t HAVE to be this year, but relying on a rookie to take over next year carries some risk.

But we don’t even know if we’re going to need anyone to take over next year.  Poyer may return (not gtd, but he is under contract) and Hyde can be brought back.

We were able to sign a decent S for 1.7M to be a backup in our scheme.  I’m sure we could sign a vet for around the same next year.  I don’t think drafting a S is ever needed.  There are always plenty available for cheap.  Free agency every single season tells us this

Agreed, but, that is a lot of options and leverage of safeties.  But, no clear path.  I like all the hedging and options.  But, not sure on anything.

Poyer and Hyde are awesome!  But, getting old and have concerns.

Rapp is possibly a good fill in.

Hamlin May or may not play again and is not a complete safety, but, a good back up.

Andersen and Mayden….meh on meh

There is some Woolen there. I don't think his tape is as strong as Woolen's. But the measurables are there.

Woolen ran a ridiculous 40 time...like low 4.3 or high 4.2s...

No idea how a player with that type of speed lasted til round 5.

Yea 4.26. The tricky think with his projection was the level of competition. I thought for sure he'd go day 2 though.
