My wife's school a few years back had a couple of minority students do it simply to get a reaction from their friend and left them there where they were found and they got suspended. So far I have seen none but based on the fine work the SPLC does in tracking NAZI organizations I suspect I will be seeing quite a few out and about as I run Saturday errands. I was on a mountain trail in the recent past and there were neo nazi recruiting fliers at the trailhead with anti semitic tropes. It was unpleasant. So, on this issue, expecting kids to have a firm grasp on Nazi symbolism and what it really means is crazy. Of course, in this case, the range is a silly kid drew a controversial symbol on a wall (vandalism) to he’s a future Nazi with serious emotional issues. On one hand, punishment and simple course correction are appropriate, on the other, the problem goes much, much deeper and exclusion from school with mental health counseling appropriate. NYC, Philly, Buffalo, Rochester, Cleveland, Detroit, Chicago, St Louis, Minneapolis, New Orleans, Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Oakland, Los Angeles, and Honolulu must all be doing better with crime than I imagined!
