Many HC also runs their respective sides of the ball, including the two teams in the Super Bowl.

Come to think of it, I seem to recall McDermott stepping into a game where he didn't like what he saw was happening on defense a few years back.  A quick Google search didn't find specifics regarding that incident.

I wish there was not a Carolina connection.  It really begs the question - are you only comfortable hiring guys you already know?

It's also indicative that this management are stuck on familiar in other aspects; they are not innovative, and that makes them easier to predict and counter.

Where was this comment when they fired a coach who had been on staff since 2017 and replaced him with Joe Danna who has no connection to McBeane? 😂

A broken clock...

Second half of the game against the chargers in 2018.

If we joined the ‘72 Dolphins as the only other undefeated team and SB Champs, our strength of schedule would be too weak, and our point differential would be disappointing.

With some…..

Let's do that and see how I feel about it. Right now we have what can only be described as a perennial playoff disappointment.

You made the comment they have a tough time going out of their comfort zone/circle with the Carolina connection. You really want me to do this?

The Bills have 26 members listed under their coaching staff (not including McDermott)… Al Holcomb will be #27.

These are the guys who crossed over in Carolina (6):

Ken Dorsey

Bobby Babich

Mike Shula

Eric Washington

Matt Worswick

Al Holcomb

These are the guys who don’t have any Carolina connection (21):

Leslie Frazier

Matthew Smiley

Rob Boras

Joe Brady

John Butler

Joe Danna

Chad Hall

Aaron Kromer

Jaylon Finner

Austin Gund

Cory Harkey

Marc Lubick

Kyle Shurmur

Kelly Skipper

Ryan Wendell

Marcus West

Eric Ciano

Will Greenberg

Hal Luther

Nick Lacy

Jason Oszvart

Looking at the front office quick… they have 9 people with VP, Director or Assistant Director titles in football operations.

No Carolina connection (9):

Jim Overdorf

Kevin Meganck

Brian Gaine

Terrance Gray

Malik Boyd

Matt Bazirgan

Lake Dawson

Chris Marrow

Curtus Rukavina

So what? 36 people across coaching and football operations and 6 of them have ties to Carolina.

Could also point to people like Dan Morgan (SEA), Joe Schoen (NYG) and Brian Daboll (NYG) as guys outside their comfort zone who were brought in to fill roles on the staff. There’s also David Culley, Bobby Johnson, Shea Tierney, Bob Babich, Jim Salgado, Danny Crossman and Heath Farwell.

As a subset of Carolina connected coaching and football ops, you have to include McDermott and Beane. That makes 8 out of 36. But, you completely left out the gaggle of former Carolina players, from Mike Tolbert to Mario Addison, and every one in between.

Replace Frazier when he leaves

Leslie Frazier is 64.  I would guess Bobby Babich is probably in line to be the team's next DC sooner rather than later.  He is currently the LBs coach.  Al Holcomb is a well respected LB coach in the NFL and has been a DC in two different places.

Read between the lines.

Brady worked for Carolina years after McDermott had already left. I’m failing to see the significance. By the time Brady was hired in Carolina there was a new head coach (who came from the college ranks and had no ties to McDermott), a new GM and a new owner.

There is definitely a possibility Frazier retires.

Here is what I believe they desperately wanted to add Steve Wilkes to the staff the 49ers gave him an offer he couldn’t refuse…Bills went with plan B his defensive coordinator

I was hoping for Wilkes, as well. It seemed to me a way to bring in a more aggressive philosophy without changing scheme, thereby avoiding player turnover. Hopefully this hiring is a message to Frazier that the heat has been turned up and if he doesn't adjust the way he calls the defense his time is up. I'm sick of hearing commentators say "Leslie Frazier blitzes less than anyone else in the league" while they're trying to fill the dead air as opposing QBs are chillin' in the pocket.

I said in my post excluding McDermott and it was implied with Beane… so it’s 8/38… because you’d have to add them to the denominator. Semantics.

We weren’t talking about players… the discussion was about staff.
