Cover 1 Ruggs is more than just speed

Recommended Posts

https://www.cover1.net/henry-ruggs-alabama-nfl-draft/

This is a prospect who has grown and developed as a route running technician during his three years at Alabama. He’s developed so much in that area that he’s quietly become one of the better route runners in the entire draft class, which would not necessarily have been the case at this time last year.

Ruggs’ quickness aid his releases against press coverage at the line of scrimmage, but his footwork is also crisp. Rarely do you see him waste movements out of his stance or in his stem, and he’s constantly gaining ground and re-setting the line of scrimmage in his favor.  Against LSU, he showed how dangerous his combination of footwork at the line of scrimmage and explosiveness at the top of the route can be.

depending on FA - we could see a very specific target even at high cost and he’d make a lot of sense. Major need, lots of familiarity, and genuinely could be 1-2 pieces away come the draft, assuming you think josh is the guy

They just said on the combine that he only had 1 drop this year. That’s pretty crazy with his speed.

of his first 77 catches 23 were TDs

love that he has those massive hands to go along with his speed

10 1/8"

His hands are an eighth of an inch bigger than Odell Beckham.

Amazing! That sounds like our kind of guy. Needing 12-14 plays to score every time keeps our points down just a bit.

Watch the clips in the article, great route running, contested catches, adjust for the ball. Ruggs & Smoke with Beasley in the slot and Knox/TE upgrade & Singletary in the space underneath...it would be a dream.

He’s gonna go top 10.

Gonna be the first WR off the board

Ruggs, Jeudy then Lamb

I agree, he has the most upside after the results of the combine.

Also looks like Ceedee Lamb could still be there. He has Deandre Hopkins numbers across the board with one big red flag.... His hands are almost an inch smaller than any Star WR I can compare him too...

It may be an unrequited love, and a waste of $35.99 at the Red Roof Inn. No free breakfast, so no......

Everything I've read about the guy has been pretty positive.  He'll definitely go pretty early in the draft.  One scout called him a faster version of Manny Sanders coming out of college.  I hope that is a more accurate comparison than the superficial one made by members of the media to John Ross.  Ross has pretty much been a bust due to injuries at this point.

The Bills could do much worse than drafting this guy.

Pretty sure I've been echoing this way before cover 1

The dude is nothing like a John Ross. His route running has improved immensely and he is a natural Hands catcher..  soft hands that can snag a football away from his body and take it the distance

He's a stud

Bye Bye OBJ. You’re yesterday’s news....and he’ll hate that. Which will lead to OBJ becoming the next head case WR in the NFL.

And he injured his leg running at the Combine.

Possible quad?

That's why IDGAF about the combine

People don't realize how many people get hurt trying to blaze a 40 when millions depend on it

Not the first or last you'll see it but I think he's ok

I disagree. I am by no means positive that he will be there when we draft but I don't view it as impossible.

I don't think that many people understand that a case could be made for calling him the 4th best wire receiver on the Crimson Tide last season. When the draft gets closer I will get into this a bit more.

Kiper has the Bills taking Ruggs in the first round.  McShay has the Eagles taking him one pick before the Bills first round selection.

His 4.27 time matches Marquise Goodwin’s 40 at the combine in 2013.

I do wonder what tyreke hill would have run had he been invited.  I haven't completely given up on ross but its not looking good.  He just had his best season, and it wasn't good.

This is also combine only speed - so taking out all the pro day people who have run some 4.30's.

Speed is a good thing and it is easy to get wowed (good or bad) at the combine warriors.

1.) DK's agility at the combine last year and the routes on his tape did not show the use of those athletic traits, which is why he fell. Had he ran a more diverse route tree that showcased that he possessed those traits, he would have certainly gone higher than he did. I get the cause for concern and his slide down the board, high ceiling and very low floor.

2.) I was a wrong Josh guy, but when I did watch Allen at the combine, it was hard not be enamored with his arm strength. The overall rawness to his game and the amount of work he would need to hopefully be the guy scared me off as a guy who, honestly was a much more polished prospect. I am more than ok with how things turned out for us. In the long run it is looking like we got the best in the bunch, but Rosen has been dealt a terrible card thus far in his career.

Ruggs's game film shows he can run a diverse tree and good routes, when he stops on a dime - his acceleration back to top speed is unbelievably fast, he can make back shoulder catches, he can make contested catches - even going up with his 42" vert to grab them, he can wiggle free from defenders while be covered, he has excellent hands. This is all stuff demonstrated on film consistently. The combine isn't going to affect his stock in anyway unless he ran a 4.1 or a 4.4 or worse; the tape doesn't lie.

Jefferson did well yesterday, I like what I saw in his game tape and honestly in the championship game he was better than Higgins, who has been rated higher on the early rankings. His 40 time might have affected some teams views on him, but they shouldn't be changing their boards based on it - when does a WR run a route like a 40 in a game and how often? It is more is he quick enough to gain separation with his speed and moves and get in a position to have the ball tossed his way....

People call him a smurf, he is what 5'11" - 6'0"  and 190 pounds, Jeudy is 6'1" 193 pounds - not much of a difference and his vertical ability more than makes up for the 2 inches. It is the added element of the explosive athleticism he has that no one else and he still has a lot of room to grow.
