I suppose it is possible to live without cash in the days of cell phone wallets.  What do you prefer cash, checks, credit cards, crypto-currency or phone based pay mechanisms?

I ask simply because I am in an airport where the restaurants force you to pay on card.  It does make it easier for the staff as they don’t have to make change for anything.  However, I suspect it also drives up the tabs because there is science that shows when you use plastic you will spend more.

Thoughts?

i use plastic for most everything because I don't like carrying around or accumulating pocket change

Airport establishments not accepting cash may be a byproduct of the increased security at an airport.  Kinda hard to make a run to the bank if they run out of Ones or Quarters

Depends on what you are buying. Myself, I like to keep alittle cash on me majority of the time. When dining at a resturant I will usually pay with my card but leave a cash tip. If you are buying cocaine I would suppose that would be a cash only trade.

Yup, I spend a way lot less when I take out $100 for each week and stretch it.

it seems very irresponsible to be using a credit card for a $1.50 coffee ten times a week.

plus I give $$ to those begging most of the time, need some pocket change for that.

I use cash and credit cards all the time. I cannot tell you the last time I used a debit card for a purchase.  No way am I slapping any type of phone-payment app on my phone.

My son and his SO NEVER have cash in their wallet. It drives me nuts.  There are a lot of places that will state (against Visa and MC TOS) a minimum purchase requirement, and they won't have five bucks in the pocket to be able to pay for something.

Card companies deduct large fees on businesses, cash often gets me a discount and is very appreciated in the service industry.

Call me paranoid, i dont have a bank account or a credit card... I still believe in the old shoe box stash. If I have to use a card for online purchases and what not i pick up a prepaid card.

Yes,I have a couple holes dug in the ground with a couple dollars in a jar myself. But still have the bank thing because that's how I can only get paid.

I am with you I don’t understand how anybody can go completely cashless.  At the same time, as you point out there is a generational thing going on.  Young people look at you like “what?” When you hand them cash at a register.  Then to make matters worse they have no idea how to make and count out change.

We will go cashless at some point.

We have laughed about digging holes in the ground and storing money in an old coffee can.  But then we figured with our luck, we'd forget where we buried it, or forget to dig it up if we moved. ?

Oooh that sucks, i would not be happy if my employer only offered direct deposit. You should have a choice, its your money. But with that said, if that was the only way to get paid I guess i would have to get an account...

I am with you on change.  I hate, absolutely despise, coins.  The penny needs to go away in the U.S. we should be like Australia and round up or down to the nearest $.05.

With todays technology, you could probably bury it and mark it using a gps app on your phone. Lol

The first time I really encountered it my son's SO wanted to buy something at an Asian store that was about two bucks. The lady at the register stuck by their minimum purchase for a CC, and I had already checked out. I looked at her (the SO), slapped $20 in her hands and walked out while she made the purchase.

They later explained to me that they seldom carry cash. He's 30, she a few years younger. Kids.  ?‍♀️

My wife is all plastic and checks, never cash.  I’m all cash.  So for my family, i would estimate that for in-person payments it’s plastic 70%, check 25%, and cash 5%.

Most monthly bills are paid online with either direct withdrawal from a checking account, or a credit card is used in order to get the bonus points/rewards.

Was at a company where employee refused to get direct deposit.  He was terminated by HR despite not being in any procedure that direct deposit is required.  I know he took company to court and they had to reinstate him but they produced an official policy and told him to get it or he would be terminated with cause.  He gave notice then and before he left company left multiple copies of payout agreement around office for people there to see and he went to a rival company.

Why anyone would not go with direct deposit these days is beyond belief.  It is so convenient.

The person in question had an issue with more than one bank not allowing him access to account so decided to only take checks.  Some sort of identity theft kind of thing where there were two people with same name at bank and other person claimed ownership of accounts.  It was eventually straightened out but it made him bank nervous.

There are extremes.  It is the mirror opposite of bill pay.  Why would anyone write out checks and mail them today?  It is both time consuming and postage is expensive.

The delay between acceptance and clearance of a check is vital to our economy and practices in business, let alone personal use.

I have never used a debit card; my wife has for Aldi's but I believe they allow regular credit cards now.

I will use cash when I do not care about receipt and want to be quicker.  Several times recently I have paid a bit more for an item and assume cashier pocketed difference.  Will also do it for gas on road when it is a station I have never heard of and you need to hand credit card to cashier; I had one case where a new credit card I used once was repeatedly used and traced to that station - the cashier copied the code from card and because it only had been used once they were able to trace the theft to him and found many credit card numbers he swiped.

I will use credit card for most purchases using American Express for any transaction I might want to dispute due to their better service in this area.

My wife occasionally uses checks but recently even some services she pays for refuse checks and she needs to do electronically; most of our bills are paid electronically.

All of the mortgage payments to me are deposited at bank by home owner.  It is a requirement in my leases.

Never used crypto-currency and only crypt currency I will ever use are 2 coins - one for each eye in the coffin.

I have never used a phone payment and have no applications installed on it to do so.

I am 56 and seldom have cash save for three places..the casino, OTB, and  gentlemans club...and seeing how I am in a gentleman's club about once every 3 years..not a biggie! Use a credit card in some form 99% of time..person to person payments all Venmo now..trying  to get some of the old farts on this board like @Augie  or @ExiledInIllinoisto get Venmo was like pulling teeth.

I get $200 out of ATM when i get cash..i would say lasts me about 3 months now on average

I wish vendors would carry small cash

pizza guy had none last week, he had to go to an ATM and wasted twenty minutes of his life

taxi driver last week was handed two fives for a tip of $7, I took back the second five offered by him with no hesitation

You lost ALL credibility when you reported that you could be considered a “gentleman”. We lost you in the first sentence! PLUS, I offered you $50 CASH money for a $30 debt, and you refused! How are we to take your financial advice on anything? You should work for the government!

Now, I will have you know I have this Venmo garbage, and fully expect to have my related credit card compromised, my credit ruined....and complete financial devastation as a result. Thank you! Rather than a cardboard box, can I live on your back porch?

I get $100 at a time from the ATM and it lasts forever. It’s 99.9% credit card transactions. BTW, most places that say they have a minimum amount for CC sales are in violation of their Merchant Agreements but are trying to keep their merchant fee rates from rising.

Yeah, if I see them in front of a supermarket I am going into, I will sometimes pay with an ATM card and get extra cash for them, but only if I can withdraw $10, not a minimum $20. Absolutely nothing for the riff-raff though.
