BabyBills Posted December 18, 2018 Share Posted December 18, 2018 As the season has gone on and as speed has been introduced, I've gained conviction in Daboll's ability to build an offense around Allen's strengths. In a world where most teams are looking for QB whisperers, do we need to worry about Daboll being a HC candidate this off-season? There will likely be a number of vacancies and I'm hopeful that a long list of attractive HC candidates can be built so that we can have Daboll for at least another year. hondo in seattle Posted December 18, 2018 Share Posted December 18, 2018 Being an OC in the NFL is a lot like being a contestant on the Food Network's "Chopped" tv series where contestants are given "mystery baskets" of ingredients and asked to make something good with them. Sometimes the ingredients suck so bad that even the most talented chefs struggle to cook anything palatable. But owners want a HC who has produced gourmet meals. Daboll hasn't done that in any of his gigs as an OC. I don't think he gets a HC shot until the O becomes productive. 3 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Next season will be important and telling; all depends on how he does developing Allen and improving the offense. No, I don't believe he will be this time around. If the Bills build a top 10 offense with Allen next year, then yes, he will. If next year goes according to plan and the offense is putting up 25 plus a game, maybe. But that's a problem I'd love to deal with at the time. Da webster guy Posted December 18, 2018 Share Posted December 18, 2018 Based on his achievements as an OC in the NFL, if he IS a candidate it certainly is on potential and not results. I know it's a nitpicky example, but his play call on 3rd and long from the Lions 30 yard line on the first drive of the game should have been a three step and fire the ball play. Instead Josh took a full drop and was sacked. Cost us 3 points and almost the game if their kicker didn't have such an off day. Daboll was visibly upset on the sideline after the play, but it wasn't an audible, so he should be mad at himself. I think he's still learning on the job. Reminded me of that Shanahan call as Atlanta's OC in the superbowl, only they were at the Patriots 21. Two dropbacks instead of two runs cost them the chance to go up two possessions with little time left, and eventually they lost championship because of it. Teams are so desperate to find the "next offensive wiz kid" that I think OCs start getting attention earlier than he should. I'm betting someone sees Allens progress, sees he has both NE and Alabama ties and it looks on paper way better then it should. It only takes 1 team, like the Browns with Petitne. Nick the Greek Posted December 18, 2018 Share Posted December 18, 2018 (edited) If I was the fan of a different team and Daboll was named the HC of my team, I think I would be disappointed. I like Daboll personally, but he still needs work to prove himself as a solid HC candidate. His main accomplishment is running a mediocre/bad offense, which is led by a collection of horrible players (this is not really his fault tho). So I guess that’s sort of impressive? The offense hasn't set the world on fire I think if Allen progresses next year and the offense becomes a top 10 unit it would be more likely then. But that’s mainly because I want to see how a fan base reacts to getting a head coach h who just “led” the second worst offense in the nfl. I’d be thrilled personally. If the offense makes a big jump in production next season, then I think teams would be more willing to give him a try. Its Christmas next week. It’s getting late in the year for if statements. Mr Claus made his list already and unless we find out one of the elves was his friend I think he’s getting coal this year. I mean that’s the guy I would want. SM wasn’t my first choice (wanted an offensive guy) but he has had some elite defenses. I would lose my mind as a fan if my team hired Daboll and I saw his resume. As as others have said, if Allen and the offense have a great year (or Polian gets a job because they are friends), he will get head coaching looks. But we score 2 tds a game.
