Bills G.M. Brandon Beane: “We have to draft best player available”

To me this says the Buffalo Bills will not select Lamar Jackson or Mason Rudolph at #12.  If they can't get up for one of the top 4 they are going to go BPA at #12 and it won't be a Quarterback.

I would be very surprised if the Bills would trade up for "one of the top 4".  It would be a mistake if they did IMO.  I'm not opposed to the idea of trading up for a QB, not at all - but the "top 4" QB are so different it would be farcical to think the Bills would have the same value on each of them.  1 or at most 2 guys, if the Bills have a top grade on him and he falls to a position where they can make a trade (and they know where those are) they will go up.

I like Lamar Jackson but I don't see him as a fit for what the Bills seem to be trying to do at QB.  I actually really like the idea of San Diego - er, I mean LA - for Jackson.  I don't know if they would, since they have other needs

Respectfully......Because the mocksters know more than the GM’s and their staff?  Personally I hope they get Jackson at #12 and keep all our picks....but we all have our opinions.

I'm even a bit removed from BPA at positions of need...I would say it's BPA at the premium positions; that is to say that you always draft a franchise QB if you don't have one (or if you have any doubt about his contract status or health).  If you're convinced that you already have your franchise QB in the fold, and are comfortable with the depth behind him, then you go BPA at pass rusher, CB, WR, and OT (in that order).

That's how I'd approach days 1 and 2...on day 3, I'm probably going straight BPA (save for specialists)

I know every team (GM) does it a little different but your example is spot on.

I think some people believe an NFL Draft Board is list of 256 players in a row.

Belichick was just on NFL Network and he even hinted that the board is made up by position and then ranked.

Here is an example of a NFL Draft Board the way I see a team starting to put one together.

This example shows that this team has 40 players ranked in the 1st round.

The 1st round is broken up in levels as you can tell.

Reaching is taking a player higher than you have him graded.

Like, if they have Jackson rated as a late first/early second round prospect, but they trade up to 7 to grab him.

BQBA

Right. So if you have a QB rated as a first rounder, and you have to give up 2 ones, 2 twos and three to get him, didn't you just spend 5 picks on a player rated as worth just one first round pick?

No, you traded multiple picks, each with a standard value, who's sum is equal to the value of the higher pick you traded for.

3rd rd grade on Tre White. Smart.

Like I said, this is a google search I used for an example.

But wouldn't it be cool to see old draft boards from all 32 teams and look for things like that.

I'm sure (using a CB position) certain team that play man to man or zone would have players ranked

differently on their boards.

"Well, Mike White was the #1 QB on our board through the entire process"

"They were the target all along"

"We couldn't believe he was available where we took him".

"We were unison that this was the right pick for the Buffalo Bills".

Standard draft coachspeak

And for the most part we don’t have many glaring holes,” Beane said. “We do have a couple, but I don’t feel like we’re entering the draft with five starting positions that I’ve got to find in this draft.”

"So don't worry when I give up 5-6 picks in this draft and next year's draft to move up and get our franchise QB" - What Beane is Thinking While Saying this

Convincing himself ?? He has quite a few positions that need an immediate upgrade.as we've discussed ad nauseum
