You mention Manning, he wasn't a sure thing, or else why was there so many "experts" and teams wanting Leaf? Newton was better than others in his class, but not nearly as good as other less hyped QBs over the years. Aaron Rodgers, Drew Bread, Philip Rivers, Eli Manning, Big Ben etc all came out with less hype and have had better careers than Newton. Wentz and Goff weren't sure things, yet look what they did. Russell Wilson and Derek Carr went after the 3rd round, yet 1 has won a SB, and the other has been better than anything the Bills have had since Kelly. Rosen, Darnold and Mayfield have been more highly touted than most of the guys mentioned above, and yet you'd want to wait year after year after year after year, kicking the can down the street hoping the stars align and some gift from the heavens falls into our lap. It rarely works that way, and in the past 10 years, the closest thing to a sure-thing has been Andrew Luck, and look what he's done lately. Point being waiting for some god-send is not a successful way to build a franchise. It is a good way of going another 18 years without playoffs though. Bingo! That's the problem with always waiting, sometimes you're stuck with a crappy hand year after year (like the year we drafted EJ Manuel) and missed your chance at legitimate talent. This year there are actual good prospects, some of the most promising in years, so waiting for a year better than this could be a looooong time away. They have pretty much put themselves into a situation where they have to do one or the other or all of the above. OldTimeAFLGuy Posted March 11, 2018 Share Posted March 11, 2018 ...do I THINK they trade up?....McBeane employs about 16 scouts....I'd GUESS with his salary, the payroll is $3.5-$4 mil ALL on Pegula's nickel......pretty formidable gang of exec level folks from around the NFL....first the 2018 QB class probably has at least 6 viable candidates.....strong points, weak points, tape showing excellence and tape showing gaffes......attitudes and reserved.......bottom line is one of THE better classes in recent memory....so if you have a need, "take 'em while they're hot" and forget next year.....the time is here...I foresee (a/k/a unsubstantiated guess) two schools of thought for McBeane.....first, he covets his draft capital and has several scenarios who may be there at 21 or 22, with his pick in mind depending on how 1-20 unfolds....OR......he's movin' up to get his guy but only to a certain extent.......he has Plan A for that guy but knows how FAR and how MUCH he is willing to give up.....alternate Plans, B, C, D probably exist as to who may be available at his max moveup spot and who fits the McBeane/McD/McDaboll mold....another caviat is this gang going OL/DL or DL/OL with the 1sts and having a next tier QB in mind as their "franchise QB"....their definition and your definition probably differ wildly and there in NO definition in the Funk & Wagnalls.......so there you have it, my "War and Peace" novel like answer to the thread and the whole DAMN thing REMAINS "clear as mud"..... Sure you can make a run here and there, get into the playoffs sometimes and maybe, just maybe once in a blue moon win it all with a guy like Glennon or Bridgewater. But to win year in and year out requires one main ingredient, a franchise QB. A smart organization leaves no stone unturned, does not rule anything out when it comes to finding that franchise QB. I don't think the QB's are just a crap shoot this year either, sure there is no "Andrew Luck" but there seem to be 4 confirmed high end prospects. You can have whatever DL, CB and LB you want, it wont affect wins and losses much. A franchise QB on the other hand can directly contribute a lot to winning. Last August this current years draft class was being talked about as the best ever. Now for every article out there about someones strengths there's another questioning them.
