Brian Daboll hired as new OC

I haven't read all 42 pages of this thread, but I just wanted to say this:

Anyone jumping off a bridge over this hire is being silly. This is a guy with a Super Bowl Ring and a National Championship in the span of 11 months. A guy who was smart enough and good enough at coaching to work for Belichick and Saban. A guy who, despite being only 42 years old, has 17 years of NFL coaching experience. A guy who -- due to having just coached in the college game this season -- should incorporate more modern passing concepts (RPOs, dynamic formations, motion, misdirection) into the Bills offense and be a real boon for whomever they draft. A guy who is WNY born and raised and is therefore emotionally invested.

But sure, let's JUST look at his offenses from 7 years ago, with bum QBs on bum squads, and conclude that he stinks and will always stink. I'm sure he couldn't have possibly learned anything in the ensuing years with New England or from his time in Alabama.

And one more thing: How can anyone who watched the second half of the National Championship game not like this guy? Talk about halftime adjustments! He scrapped his whole offensive gameplan and created a new one, on the fly, using a freshman QB and freshman skill players. Then, in overtime, he made the incredibly bold "Seattle" play call on 2nd and 26 and went for the jugular, instead of playing it safe and trying to just get into field goal range.

No more dinosaur offense in Buffalo! Huzzah!

How about he pulled his qb in the second half of the game and won it.

Even more than that, with a very different style of playcalling.  That most impressed me, how fluidly Bama transitioned (with a few hiccups from Tua).  That's great coaching.

It's supposed to be the easiest system to grasp.   So I think it fits well with a drafted guy.    A vet could learn it faster if he had to probably, but I don't think it favors any one QB.   I think it favors them all.

That one fact, by itself, is one of the biggest reasons for optimism going forward.    Just my opinion.

I don't disagree, but I think it can also be argued that the more experience a QB gets with the system, the more they can abuse the nuances of it. I don't mind if the vet they bring in isn't top shelf if they have experience running the system and diagnosing defenses efficiently.

Found it very interesting that, while working with the Patriots, Brian Daboll is actually the one who found Josh McDaniels and hired him as a coaching assistant.

Then he and Josh McDaniels found and hired Matt Patricia.

Hopefully he can find those types of assistants to bring into Buffalo!

Agreed

As said before I'm not giving daboll credit for pulling the QB on a team run by King Saban.

Just like I'm not bashing daboll for his poor OC stint in the NFL a decade ago.

I like the hire.

Very impressive.  Now can he help the Bills lose Juan Castillo?

Agreed.

Hopefully daboll wants to be and MCD gives him some leeway.

MCD is pure vanilla, slow and steady.

Is he the guy to get to to the promised Land? Nah I don't think so.

Is he a good choice to steady the ship and build a foundation? I think so.

After the Dennison disaster, any change will be welcomed. McD has done a great job with this franchise, but his conservative gameday coaching concerns me. I think that will need to change for us  to become a championship contender. Hopefully Daboll chooses and is allowed to be more aggressive.

We're likely to shed him quite naturally.  Castillo is 100% a WCO guy and I believe Daboll prefers a more power-blocking approach that is probably better suited to the guys we have.

Ok I can give you that.

BB was fired from Cleveland though.

Fired.

Somebody above him thought he failed.

(Not saying they were correct)

He took them to 11-5 and the playoffs, then they regressed, on all fronts, and was fired after the move was announced.

I'm just saying even if you thought he was decent with the browns, he obviously had improved since then.

I would say that HOPE daboll has learned and improved since his HC stint, hoping he learned a bunch under BB on the pats

Daboll has never had a head coach stint that I know of.  When was Daboll a HC and where?

I run an HVAC company in Atlanta. This is just a place I go to read about the Bills and post comments.

Some fanboys believe a person is obliged to answer all their questions. Sorry, I’ve a job. That’s the gig I’m running cause that’s what feeds my kids.

I don't think anyone believes there's an obligation to answer all questions, but when a guy does respond, we judge what he chooses to respond to, and how.

No one would wink if you bowed out, but answering a thoughtful response with "that's pathetic, really" then throwing the "I have a Life, Fanboy" card marks you out as a Tool.

Do I want to listen?  Can you give us the high level summary?

Watched a handful of Chiefs from 2012 and Dolphins games from 2011. I saw a mixed bag of things. I really liked the way his offenses ran the ball. I think Shady will do really good things in this offense. The passing game was very meh. I forgot how utterly horrendous Matt Cassel was and Matt Moore wasn’t a whole lot better. One thing I did notice is that Dabbol doesn’t use much play action or move the pocket. It’s a lot of drop back passing from under center with 5 and 7 step drops. That doesn’t bode well for Tyrod assuming that’s the kind of offense he wil be bringing. I’m hoping he has since learned some things and his passing attack has since evolved otherwise I’m bracing myself for another season where we are good at running but have trouble throwing the ball.

Shady will look good because he is good. The passing game was meh because the QBs were meh (or worse). He didn’t have much to work with.  Passing game will be what the QB is.

I totally understand and get where you’re coming from, but you must acknowledge that to draw your conclusion is to literally wipe out and ignore the 4 years he held the position we hired him for, right?

I dig the username though and appreciate any Wes Anderson reference. Cheers!

From the little research/reading I've done, other than Cleveland, his offenses improved in his one year at each position.  For each, he had very little to work with and overall, the teams were terrible before he arrived.  Moreover, I think he biggest endorsement of his ability is that the players and coaches seemed to believe he was great and that his reputation is such that Belechick and Saban kept hiring him.

I didn’t specify but in regards to the run game, Dabbol’s offenses looked to do very well run blocking which will only benefit a good player like Shady.

Thanks for the insight though ?
