A mere six draft picks remain on the roster from the 28 selected by former general manager Doug Whaley between 2013 (none remain) and 2016: Lawson, Washington, Miller, O’Leary, Preston Brown and Henderson.

Fortunately we are not in a full blown rebuild.

Because he sucked.

I wonder how many will be on the 2018 opening day roster. I can see O'Leary... Shaq better step up.

Not at all. Nix was phased out, the 2013 offseason was Whaleys. Whaley was phased out, the 2017 offseason has been McDermott and Bean.

Bean wasn't even in the building. McDermott said Whaley and his team put together the draft board. Same as 2013. The 2017 offseason was Whaley's.

So what exactly is normal. Do you have any statistics to show when a new coach and GM take over, what percentage of players on average remain? But would also have to determine the quality of the players inherited too which is pretty much impossible to compare.

From what is posted pretty much all the complaints center around Vlad being here and that they cut the backup running back who two months ago everyone was posting how screwed we were for letting Mike G leave and now are stuck with Williams as the backup.

You act like it's happening in a normal way

What teams can you point to gutting the existing roster and getting considerably older? It's a rare approach.

We were a .500 team with atrocious coaching this wasn't a roster that was devoid of talent.

No team is devoid of talent. That doesn't mean that we had enough of it or the right pieces that fit together. As far as getting older the age average gets skewed with a few veterans added to the list such as Incognito and Kyle Williams. Under Whaley he gratuitously gave away picks while this regime is adding picks. His drafting in general was uninspiring. Under Whaley he structured contracts that put the team in a vulnerable position such as the Dareus contract and even the McCoy contract extension which at the time was not required.

It's my opinion because of the current qb deficiency this team wasn't a playoff team entering the season. Even if it was, as many believe, it was still at best a fringe playoff team. With the accumulation of picks this team is putting itself in a position to secure a franchise qb and bolster this thin roster. That in itself is a refreshing change.

So This. Doing the same thing repeatedly wasn't working so now they are trying a completely different approach.

This is a tad silly....

Even without a changeover at coach and /or gm how many players from 5 drafts ago are still on the team ???

Also let's not forget to factor in trades of players to other teams for players and future picks vs giving the false impression buffalo drafted all busts.

And here is one of the eternal issues with the Bills drought.... fuzzy accountability and too many people having a say. What I have heard of the 2013 Draft is that it was Buddy Nix's draft. Whaley was on a special project that whole draft season - Find the Quarterback. EJ is on Doug (thought Buddy orchestrated the trade up) Woods, Kiko, Glass Goodwin etc are on Buddy. This draft I think is entirely on McDermott in terms of who was picked.... but Whaley has some responsibility for the evaluations.

There are those who thought Whaley was a good GM with a bad HC.

I probably count here. I think Doug was a reasonable GM who didn't find his Quarterback (major black mark) and was saddled with two coaches who were not his choices. The Bills should have hired Hue Jackson in 2015 who was Doug's #1 candidate and then held him equally accountable for the results. Rex was a terrible, terrible, terrible hire that was predictable the day he got the job and he wasted in 2015 the best Bills roster in almost two decades.
