Sammy will be given the opportunity to check all those boxes. He checks 2 of the 4 right now. He's accountable and reliable. He doesn't get in trouble and he can be relied on to produce when he's healthy. He needs to prove he's durable and will be available.

(In your opinion) he checks 2 of the 4.

McDermott "concerned w Clay's knee situation. We are monitoring that by managing his reps, but he's participated in most everything." #Bills

Sean McDermott: OG John Miller (ankle sprain) day-to-day. WR Zay Jones (knee) still week-to-week.

McDermott: Bills 'are concerned' with Clay's knee issue

Charles Clay has had chronic knee trouble since joining the Buffalo Bills as a highly paid restricted free agent in 2015.

The problem has persisted during the team's current offseason workouts, and it is something that coach Sean McDermott is worried about.

"We are concerned with Charles' knee situation," McDermott told reporters Thursday before the Bills took the field for an OTA workout. "It's something we have to manage moving forward in order to have him on the field for us, which is important moving forward. He's a weapon for us."

McDermott did say that Clay has taken part in drills, but the team is being cautious about how much work he receives.

"He's participated in most all of it," the coach said. "That said, just like with all of our players, we have to put them in position to be successful, Charles no different. So if managing his reps, if that's what we have to do, then we'll continue to do that."

McDermott did say that Wednesday's signing of free-agent tight end Wes Saxton was not related to Clay's knee issue. Besides Clay and Saxton, the Bills have five other tight ends: Nick O'Leary, Blake Annen, and rookie free agents Jason Croom and Keith Towbridge.

Elsewhere on the health front, McDermott said right guard John Miller suffered an ankle sprain Wednesday and is "day-to-day." McDermott said another offensive lineman, Michael Ola, is also day-to-day with a knee injury.

The coach said rookie wide receiver Zay Jones is "progressing well" from the knee injury he suffered in practice last week, and continues to be "week-to-week

For me, I'd use it as a guideline but not an absolute rule. Each player is case by case. You strive for all 4 boxes to check but some might be in progress - if you believe in the player as a whole you might move fwd with 2 or 3 of the 4.

The Bills do to much of the believing in a player part at the expense of being on the football field IMO.

Useless If you don't play...

This was the thinking that led to trading Marshawn Lynch.

Which in the end really did not hurt us....we found other running backs.

With all do respect.....what would you rather have? Talented players that dont step up as team leaders? Or very good players that give it everything they have and inspire the players around them.

Outgoing Marshawn Lynch was not controlling his weight.....and was having off the field issues.

I'm concerned that there isn't an out in his contract til 2019...

This was the thinking that led to trading Marshawn Lynch.

The bigger mistake was drafting CJ spiller in the first round when we had jackson and lynch. You gave yourself a reason to get rid of lynch by doing that - and we needed Oline help and WRs.

We went into 2010 with Lee Evans in a walk year - a 7th round pick in stevie johnson, and 2 UDFAs in nelson and donald jones... And we trade lynch, and draft spiller instead of Dez. Woof. Great job Buddy!

This thread has nothing to do with quarterbacks, what are you doing here?

If Mahomes turns out to be a good QB for the Chiefs , ( oh boy ) could you imagine how many threads will be posted by him daily ??
