Thinking of buying a all electric car...thoughts

Recommended Posts

So sitting at home with no car (since mine was totaled in my accident) has given me a lot of time to research what my next car will be when I do go back to work. I am considering buying a newish Nissan Leaf I have had my I on.

- Almost knew so it would still have manufacture warrenty. I know the single biggest expense if something needed to be repaired would be the battery so I would also buy an extended warranty for that.

- Almost 100 percent of the time I am driving by my self so being a smallish car is not really a factor. I am not a proud person (always trying to get the best mpg car i can find....dont care about how fast it drive or how good it looks)

- Using conservative estimates say a full charge gets 80 miles (I think it gets more) off a full charge. I rarely ever do anything but drive back and forth to my job or around town which is less then 60 miles almost 100 percent of the time

- My job already had the hook ups for electrical vehicles for free

- My garage is already set up so I can do the higher 120 voltage (I think) if it is not I have a friend who is an electrician and does all that type of work around my house is is good at what he does.

- I would like to say that I am doing this for the evironment but I would be lying.....I pay anywhere from 50-70 dollars per week in gas and am looking for ways to fix my budget. I am taking on a increasing amount of financial care for my grand kids so that my daughter can prepare to go to the police academy.

Thoughts?

Nissan Leaf is a real panty dropper.

does the trunk pop open causing you lose your Victoria secret bags while driving?

You joke but those educated millennial liberal feminazi's love an environmentally conscious man.

I thought they loved environmentally conscious WOman

You might not pay for gas but when something breaks in an electric car the price is steep to fix.

You want something cheap that is good on gas and will be easy to fix... Civic.

throw in the money saved on gas may end up just going to pay the extra hydro costs when the car is plugged in over night.

I'd consider it if in a 2 car or more household. There's usually at least one car putzing around town. One car household? Not so sure....rent a car for longer distances? Not worth it to me.

John, my suggestion is to go old school and look into a Stomper 4x4.

I'd also like to take this opportunity to tell Mead and Fergy to eat a large bag of dicks.

And you love your little gay car. I mean gray car.

Decided not to go with the electric

Interestingly enough....he guy at the dealership actually talked me out of it. Apparently the 2013 leaf gets like 60 miles on a charge.

While I only go abut 30 miles one way to work that just doesnt cut it for me......if it got like 80 miles I would have got it today.

Just gonna look for a new put put type car looking at the Kio Rio, Nissan Versa, Civic etc etc

The Nissan Versa has a built in incinerator for sanitary napkins which (from what others have said - i.e. Gugny) is a nice feature.

This post won't be popular with the "hey ladies look at my fancy wheels" crowd, but if you're serious about cutting costs, here's what i'd suggest.

The article linked below is from 2013 and shows projected total cost of ownership for then new 2013 models. If I was looking for reliable transportation at lowest total cost, I'd try to find a 4 year old low mileage 2013 model year car that was on this list:

http://www.thecarconnection.com/news/1082509_misers-models-the-ten-cheapest-cars-to-own

After 4 years, depreciation is less of a factor, and if you find one with low mileage, it ought to be fairly reliable.

P.S. My brother Darryl says I should remind you - - "Your mileage may vary."

got a prius even though I was hesitant.

I love it. get anywhere from 50-55 mpg and it has surprising get up and go. I'm married with a kid (car seat and all) and it has more than enough room. went to the casino with a buddy who was 6'5" and he fit in the passenger seat.

if I was still single and looking I wouldnt own this car though lol.

I went from a 5 mile commute to a 55 mile commute. If I could have afforded a Prius, it would have easily been my first choice.

As others have mentioned, and made fun of, I went with the Nissan Versa Note.

I love it. I'm averaging about 40 miles per gallon (more in the summer) and it's surprisingly comfortable. I just drove 3.5 hours each way to NYC with my son and it was like nothing.

I've driven through the ice, snow, rain and wind that our lovely region blesses us with and the wind is the only thing I feel more than I'd feel in a bigger vehicle.

With a sticker price of about $17K (2015 SV model, new), I can't complain. I'm about a year in with about 30K miles and I'd recommend it.
