The entire premise is pretty ridiculous IMO. If Whaley doesn't find a highly qualified coach who can assemble an excellent staff, he's signing his own eventual death warrant. The line of reasoning makes absolutely no sense at all.

It goes with the narrative about Tyrod Taylor choosing elective surgery without the Bills medical staff knowledge/approval so...what? So he can force the Bills to option him ('cuz they'll do that before they let him walk and get nothing), miss out on a free agency where he's likely to attract a lot of attention, and tarnish his own reputation by getting known as a player who "games" his contract? That makes absolutely no sense at all either, except somehow to the media who are running with it.

I keep hearing this and it's just crazy.

Only one thing will effect his job security - lack of success. He's not going to hire somebody who he feels is an inferior coach because he can impose his will on him. He might miss on the coach but he's going to hire the guy he feels is going to put up wins, period.

So if that's what you mean by "threaten his job security" then you're right.

not bringing in Coughlin and other HCs like Schwartz and Bradley shows that he wants to be able to control his HC. What he should be doing is getting the best guy period.

Gus. Bradley.

Why do you think he would a) want control b) be able to demand control c) be considered for a HC job so soon after completing the worst HC tenure in history

Many folks just don't like Whaley is what it is. That's fine, but tell us something that makes sense even if others might disagree.

pretty sure whaley wants someone who doesn't want to control the 53

he actually said he was open to the HC controlling the 53. I assume it would depend on who it was and if they had the credentials.

The Chargers have said the 53 will remain with the GM no matter what.

Only one team has brought in either of those guys. Are all those other GMs doing the same thing?

Just because Whaley doesn't like the same candidates you do doesn't mean he has ulterior motives.

Whaley's "search" is nothing but a sham. He's so concerned that a coach might usurp his power and control that in the end he won't end up hiring a coach AT ALL.

At the end of season presser after a 2017 season in which the Bills are historically unwatchable due to a lack of ANY coaching AT ALL, he will claim that it's not his fault, that he's only in charge of the 53.

Incensed, Bucky Gleason, picking up where he left off in 2016, will resume shrieking like a chicken about his job description until his head literally explodes, killing Jerry Sullivan in the process from an acute ruptured colon brought on by the internal pressure generated by the force of the blast.

Vic Carrucci, in close proximity, will bear witness to this horrific scene. Covered in the now defunct Sullivan's feces and Gleason's brain... ok, anatomically unlikely to be COVERED in Gleason's brain, but probably enough there that a good forensic pathologist could find a trace or two... Vic will fall into a catatonic state requiring prolonged psychiatric hospitalization, at which point Doug Whaley will yell "Suck it, bitCHEZ!!" and announce that his work here is done, will tender his resignation, and will ride off into the sunset in Rex's pickup truck to a host of confused stares and an increasing crescendo of applause.

Hey, it's at least as plausible as Whaley intentionally hiring an underqualified coach to save his job, right?

Imagine Richard as HC, Bradley as DC, and Lynn stays as OC...

Isn't it a little unlikely that the guy who was Seattle DC would come back and serve as DC under his former assistant DB coach?

I could be mistaken but his Wiki page doesn't lead me to believe he's earth's most modest and self-deprecating individual.

OMG, I laughed until I couldn't breathe. The dog jumped up on my chest to attempt CPR and I think my Other Half wonders just what I'm watching on this computer.

or guys that wont threaten his job security.

What in the world leads you to make a statement like this. Has it ever occurred to you that the best way to not only keep his job but to become a "star" GM is to find a coach who does nothing but win?

not bringing in Coughlin and other HCs like Schwartz and Bradley shows that he wants to be able to control his HC. What he should be doing is getting the best guy period.

May I humbly ask you to list all the teams that are scheduling Coughlin, Schwartz and Bradley for HC jobs? And if there are none, are all GMs looking for guys they can control? Or maybe, just maybe, no one believes in them as HCs. I don't know. You however seem to. So why not enlighten us as you apparently are part of the Illuminati of Coach Watchers.
