AP subscriptions have become hugely expensive, and the News already has secondary wire options, as noted, like the WaPo news service, LA Times and more. Yep, people would rather look at cat memes and articles about Bruce Jenner's sex change than ones about Putin or ISIS or the social security trust fund... People can read/view national news anywhere. These partnerships are, understandably, becoming more commonplace.
