Before talking to the coach, or showing leadership he was focused on himself not the game. I hated this action. A real leader would not even think of the coat. JK showed toughness Trent showed he was a wimp. EJ now wears a closed front helmet with visor. The spacing in the eye area is small with extra bars and then a visor added. His vision is restricted and most important in the huddle eye contact with his teammates is interfered with. Real winning QBs like Manning (2), Brady, Russell Wilson, Favre, Cutler, Roethlisberger want to see, be seen by teammates, and show emotion and strength in the huddle. Can you imagine JK chewing out House Ballard hiding behind a shield, Many QBs used to unstrap the helmet in the huddle to look at teammates in the eyes and then snap it at the line. EJ hides. RBs and Lineman can hide, QBs have to lead. This is an observation but in my thoughts one that is troubling. (ps, changing the helmet does not make him a leader but using it is a symbol of isolation rather than strength of leadership.) You remind me of an utterly neurotic girlfriend I used to have. I was drinking my coffee one morning, and she started yelling at me for "criticizing [her] with [my] body language." Once she got mad at me because, apparently, the way I had trimmed my beard meant that I would develop a short temper. But, she never told me that I was selfish because I put on a coat in the winter, or that I lacked leadership skills because I didn't like the glare of bright lights. That would be crazy. He was a better pick than Graham obviously, but Seattle had him starting backup to Flynn if you remember, Despite what people claim, most did not "know" he was going to be a decent qb, and the jury is still out if he is going to be a great qb. Also who does Seattle have to backup Wilson? Jackson and Pryor? Why didn't they draft someone "just in case" to develop and stuff? Its a whole bunch of what ifs and its obnoxious. For every Russell Wilson we could've picked up "as a diamond in the rough" there are a few other QBs we could have wasted picked on too. Just because you witnessed one (russell wilson), or two (tom brady) does not mean we should start wasting draft picks hoping to find one as well. This irks me too. If anyone "knew" anything about the guy he'd have been picked #3 overall or sooner. Many athletic short QBs failed in the nfl before him, and I can't believe there is a rookie out there who wouldn't have done better on a team like Seattle over any other. Talk about being set up for success. He averaged less than 25 attempts per game and under 200 Yards per game. That doesn't win anything unless you have an elite running game and an elite defense. In 2012 His rookie year the seahawks defense gave up 17 or less 11 times counting playoffs. The Buffalo Bills defense in EJ Manuel's rookie season held opponents to 17 or less - well NONE. I'm not saying EJ was good - I'm saying when your defense gives up nothing or next to nothing your interception, fumbles, bad plays don't matter as much your margin for error is much bigger. It happens to be a trait of successful QBs to have open vision. And do not suggest that Newton is successful compared to Manning, Wilson, Roethlesberger, Favre, Rodgers, JK etc. I believe it demonstrates a personality that will hold him back from being elite. Cam Newton DOMINATED his rookie season, WITH a visor...as did Michal Vick. Pretty sure Jim McMahon won a Super Bowl, wearing a visor. Manning caused a bit of a stir when he and coach Jim Caldwell emerged from a sideline tent with a visor fitted on Manning's facemask. It's practice and the preseason...who cares what they wear? A lot of the "I wish we had Wilson" crowd still fail to understand that Seattle's supporting cast on defense and the run game are primarily responsible for Seattle's success.
