the only way its a hoax is if the girl in the photos was in on it. if thats true - a lot becomes possible. they could have had all kinds of in real life interaction with her using the fake name.

She said she has never met Te'o. They found out who the girl really is that was pictured as Te'o's supposed twitter squeeze.

Ya....Te'o never ever saw or met the girl he said he had all these experiences with including meeting her...this is clear cut lie

If he was the victim of a hoax, how does he explain the fake Twitter picture and the subsequent tweets?

Exactly this.

This was not a purely electronic relationship. The South Bend Tribune reported that Te'o and his girlfriend met in person for the first time. The relationship involved a lot of tweeting and phone conversations. The photograph of the girlfriend was stolen from a Facebook account and the woman in the photograph has nothing to do with this.

Right there, Te'o is toast.

Right, even if it started as a hoax, he lied to cover it up. He said he met her at Stanford, his father said all those things to the South Bend Tribune. It would be terrible if Teo knew about it and his father didn't and he let his father go out there and give all of those quotes that Teo himself knew not to be true.

I thought it was weird when the girl said she just took the picture for the guy but it would be dumb of Deadspin not to triple check their facts while reporting on a story in which major media companies were terribly duped on.

Also why would a chick even want to mess with a guy who is a potential Heisman candidate and future NFL player who was destined to make millions?

Why would teo want to make it up is just as easy a question

And deadspin never clears her - just repeats her claims

I'm not saying that's what happened and teo is clear but it seems she may at the very least be involved. If she's involved everything blows wide open for possibilities. If not, it's all teo

Yea and if that's a lie? That was the entire point I was making. If she created the twitter after meeting him but used a fake name. Her stories shady too if you pay attention to it

Who knows? he could be the victim of an online hoax. This other guy may be gay and had the hots for Teo' and figured this was way to get closest to him. Plus a lot of this "Teo said this or that about being with her" is from newspaper articles that someone else wrote. Teo is still a kid, and quite possibly very shy around women. A lot these athletes lead sheltered lives. He may have thought this was real relationship with a real woman ... like a modern day "pen pal" kind of thing. Or he could have been exploiting it for national attention from start. Just wait till it all comes up before rushing to judgement ... it's not like anyone's lives are in danger in the interim

Manti is a Mormon...trying to be like his prophet Joe?

Nobody knows, but Joseph Smith who started the Mormon religion was a WNY!

Read Joe Smith vs. New York State

  1. “State of New York v. Joseph Smith”

    • a) Court records prove the Smith was arrested in New York in 1826 for
      being a con-artist.

    • b) “Warrant issued upon written complaint upon oath of Peter G.
Bridgeman, who informed that one Joseph Smith of Bainbridge was a disorderly person and an impostor. Prisoner brought before the Court March 20, 1826. Prisoner examined: says that he came from the town of Palmyra ... that he had a certain stone which he occasionally looked at to determine where hidden treasures in the bowels of the earth were; that he professed to tell in this manner where gold mines were a distance under ground ... he pretended to tell by looking at this stone where coined money was buried in Pennsylvania, and while at Palmyra he frequently ascertained in that way where lost property was of various kinds...” (Court records of New York).

    • c) While the Mormons claimed this never happened, Jerald and Sandra Tanner published the microfilm copies of the court records in 1971, under the title, Joseph Smith’s 1826 Trial.

Look even if he was duped...he pretended that he had a gf who he met...then he kept this lie going and let a huge story about his character develop involving her death...there is little way he's a victim.

So you're advancing the theory that she later entered the hoax after Te'o's buddy created a fake profile and then wanted out for some reason? What are you saying?

I've read everything there is about this so far and have no !@#$ing clue what's going on.

Short version:

-his friend made a fake twitter using pictures of some girl he knows that didn't know Te'o and tweeted him

-eventually this fake person dies

-Te'o tells everyone his GF died, and that he met her in Standford and other details like her coming to Hawaii and talking to her for hours on the phone every night

-Now everyone knows it was a fake twitter

Whether someone considers an online GF a real GF is up to them. Ive read marriages have fallen apart because of secret online relationships where the "cheating" spouse never met the online mistress. Obviously in those instances the offended spouse considered it "real".

You missed:

-Te'o looks to be clearly in on it. Very screwed.

Is there any reason to bring his religious beliefs into it?

Comical irony? A guy who devotes his life to a religion founded by a convicted con artist, turns out to have pulled off the biggest hoax in college football history. How is that not approriate to note?

I'm not sure T'eo ever referred to her as his girlfriend, but even if he met her there's no reason why the girl couldn't have misrepresented who she was.

Everyone seems to be skipping one big item: if there is no dead girl, who was he speaking to on the phone, where is she now and what is her story? I'm guessing someone is requesting some phone company and ISP records right about now.

Neither does anyone else. But feel free to jump to any conclusion you want and state it with 100% certainty.

No question, I wouldn't argue otherwise. But I find it interesting that our society now appearly believes media has zero responsibility to understand or confirm what they are reporting.

Funny how blogs and other internet reporting mediums has diluted true and responsible investigative reporting. It's difficult for them to compete these guys...some just float crap out there & see what sticks to drive up traffic to their site. If it accurate, they're 1st with the story. If not, no follow-up...tough spot for the legit pro, IMO

yup...there is no reporting...not in sports...not in anything...

Look to FOX News, CNN, ESPN, MSNBC and the like for killing credibility before 'the internet'

Two things. Deadspin did a great job reporting facts so we do know something. And also your missing the point of the phone part. There is no girl at all so he wasn't talking to anyone.

But what if real life girl was in on it using a made up name and profile?

But she was never a student at Stanford! I suppose she could have gone to the game in pursuit of her masterful scheme, but come on...

How about Te'o's father saying the girlfriend came out to Hawaii to visit Manti?

Murder detectives will tell you that usually, the most obvious and plausible explanation for a crime is the correct explanation.

When you have to go through a whole bunch of gymnastics to make a story make sense, it is probably a lie.

Unless there was someone which is possible in several different ways this goes. She could've been made up by the real life girl in the photos. He could've been speaking to the guy even hiding a romance. I assume at some point friends saw him answer calls, texts etc.... Which would've either been a dead line or...

Random girl goes to game. Happens into guys number. Says hey lets mess with him. Guy offers to fly her to Hawaii - hey free trip

That's no more hoops than teo and his friend creating it for fun from scratch. In fact based on the facts I've read so far it's almost the path of least resistance to an explanation

+1. Either Te'o is the victim of the most elaborate hoax ever played for zero financial benefit, or he's in on it. When you hear hoof beats you should think horses, not magical fairy unicorns from Mars.

Or he actually did talk to a girl but it wasn't the girl in the picture, just some other female who was in on it with the other dude.

That he might've met her and she started the profile with a fake name

To what end? She pretended to date him for years, well before he was making any national headlines, talked on the phone with him, and then pretended to die one day suddenly. He doesn't follow up at all. He never visits her in the hospital either after the crash or while fighting leukemia. Why?

Other than her word is there any proof? Or might she be the one at the epicenter and not him with regards to the lied? Just playing devils advocate until someone can say teo says he never met the girl, or her whereabouts are accounted for during one of his meetings with the "gf"
