Overrated Owner and Organization
Greybeard replied to WIDE LEFT's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
You just convinced my the Irsay's are one of the most astute owners of all time. First the collapse to get Manning and then they collapse to get Luck. And neither time did the league call them out. That is skill. Not to switch sports but I wish the Sabres would have had such intelligence this year. -
Technical difficulties. Receiving Bills Games over the air

Looks like the one I had. Very directional. Note that it is mounted to a rotor which I think is a really good idea. -

Television broadcasting is basically line of sight. The curvature of the earth limits the distance you can receive the signal. So if you want to receive the signal, higher is better. Note that television antenna's are directional so you also have to point in the correct direction. Size/design also matters. When I first moved to Central NY in the 70's, the antenna route was the only way to go. I purchased the largest antenna I could get, and the Rochester signal was still intermittent. There are times you will get some skip and the signal will be better but it never seemed to happen during Bills games. As a side note, when the Bills sucked in the 70's, the games were carried in Syracuse rather infrequently. -
ESPN article ranks Marv Levy # 17

This is not directed at you but multiple posts in this thread. I find it interesting that since we are Bills fans here, people will complain about games like the Tennessee Throwback but mark up the Comeback game against Houston as sure fire win. If the refs didn't make or should I say miss, some of the calls they did, the Bills don't make the comeback and Marv and the Bills don't make it to 4 straight. Changes Bills history. Of course if some GM in Minnesota does screw his his team before he leaves, the Cowboys never become the team that could beat the Bills. I always felt the first loss was largely on Marv. He was outcoached and he was reponsible for the DC during those years. But I don't recall any team ever peaking like the Redskins did. The Dallas games, I thought the Bills should have at least split. What did the first Dallas game prove to me? To never listen to anyone who ever says, a team has been there before and that gives them an edge. Lastly, I also think the Bills were ripped off in Tennessee and yet have no problem saying the Bills have the greatest comeback in NFL history. Being a fan doesn't mean you have to always be rational. -
While we are on the topic of taxes. When a player plays for the Bills, he pays state taxes, I assume. So if he plays for the Dolphins, he pays no state taxes? Is this true?

I worry we take a QB @ 8 just to placate fans
Greybeard replied to PromoTheRobot's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I haven't seen this theory yet, so.....Bills don't draft Nassib in the first round. He falls to second round. Bills still don't draft him. Teams assume Marrone knows something about him they don't. So he falls to 3rd or 4th round. -
Interesting that he went there for the financial package. Unless it has changed, div 3 schools don't give athletic scholarships, they give academic ones, although as all things collegiate sports related, things can become a bit blurred. And a couple of pro's have played there. Not football though. Joe Juneau, Adam Oates and Darren Puppa. I think there may have been a few others.

Per Ed Kilgore: George Saimes has passed away
Greybeard replied to Punch's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
My two favorite Bills have always been George and Bob James. They were both so good I just couldn't pick one. George was perhaps the best tackler who ever played for Buffalo. RIP George -
New York to ban youth football?

I would be willing to bet more kids have died playing Baseball than Football. So that would mean Little League would have to go also. -
The 53 Year Anniversary Bills Wall of Shame Awards
Greybeard replied to Meathead's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I always thought Shaw's big rookie season was due to the great catches that Marlin Briscoe made on the numerous jump balls Shaw threw. Briscoe was an amazing receiver. I believe one of Shaw's passes actually flew south for the winter. BTW, did you ever hear that they were going to trade Dennis Shaw for Linda Lovelace. Can you guess the punchline? Thanks, I really enjoyed that. For some reason I remember the 11 o'clock news from that time talking about Rutkowski's start. I think it was that brief time Ernie Warlick was doing the sports. -
Who is the Greatest Buffalo Bills Team of All Time
Greybeard replied to TheKickIsGood's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The Bills of the 90's featured the "Bend but don't break" defense. The 64 Bill's didn't even bend. I was always impressed that after McDole was thought of as too old and slow for the Bills, he played 8 more years for the "Over the Hill" gang in Washington. That was just how good McDole was in his prime. -
DREW BLEDSOE VS. FITZPATRICK (stats in b-lo)
Greybeard replied to bobobonators's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
This is very true for all the QB's in that time period. Maybe one of them would have worked out if they had a little time to pass. Once it was determined that Bledsoe could be beat by blitzing and/or a great pass rush, he was done. If we had any kind of line he could have probably had a more successful run. In my opinion, we may have given up on a couple of QB's that could have succeeded with a little blocking up front. -
Bills hire Doug Marrone to be Head Coach

Technically, currently they can't hope for a Big East title. The football team's next opportunity will be in the ACC. -

I was in the Lovie camp. Hiring Lovie would have been like hiring Chuck Knox. Hiring Knox really settled down the coaching department after all the previous HC the Bills just had. You didn't go into the season or any particular game thinking you were unprepared. What I don't get about Marrone is he was 1-3 to start the season and most of the SU football fans I would have been happy to get rid of Marrone. He goes on a win streak and all of a sudden he is a hot commodity for a pro job. I feel like we just hired the Rob Johnson of coaches. And to those that say he turned the football program around at SU, he did. He turned it from what was really a dead program to a mediocre one in a weak football conference. All negativity aside, I can only wish him the best of luck. -
LOL, nice connnection.

Very impressive.

what's a good name for the bills defense?
Greybeard replied to Dr. Trooth's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Ole -
I also think Smith is an asset. I am not fond of the wildcat but I still think he can be used to an advantage. After 50 years, I have come to expect what happened today. But going into the season I could only think I was going to be really excited about watching the Bills when they went on D. I can honestly say, in those 50 years, I can't remember watching a D that was worse. The talent the Cowboys had on D in the early 90's must have truly been amazing, considering who their DC was. Maybe the other D coaches made up for it. Wade, I really miss you.

Tom Brady’s Achilles Heel Revealed
Greybeard replied to BiggieScooby's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I don't know if I agree with your conclusion but I certainly applaud the effort. -
I liked the way Gilmore made the tackle when he was knocked out of the game. It reminded me of George Saimes, who was one of the surest tackles the Bills have ever had. Takes some courage to tackle that way. Fitz = Tebow When he is good he can be great but when he is not you get a lot of INT's. They are both streaky. They both have a lot of confidence in themselves, or more directly, they don't fear forcing the ball into a receiver. Again this gives mixed results. Lasty, why was Fitz in the game in the last 10 minutes? Did they really think they could come back? If Fitz is your #1, why would you risk injury to him? I really don't understand the coaching staff on that. That rings true for Spiller and Jackson also.
