Here come the restructures
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to 78thealltimegreat's topic in The Stadium Wall
Agree could be not doing it till needed, but also makes you wonder if they are concerned with pushing money down the road. You won't do that unless certain player will be here. Likely nothing going on, but does make you wonder a little -
Actually the Bengals spent more money and 49er's almost as much as the Bills. So actually it's more a case of those teams making bad player or coaching choices as the money hasn't helped them. KC certainly has spent very little, but now down to only two outliers so have to question if more to the story with them. There's also many teams with bad records AND bad ST rankings so that would just as easily say it's a good investment; NO, Indy, Tenn, Denver,

Interesting stats. I do think ST is more important than many think and this also show the Bills are devoting around the same amount of resources as other teams. Everyone keeps bringing up keeping Kumerow over Hodgins, but also stated many times Hodgins didn't play ST so even if he were kept, likely he'd have not been activated on Sunday anyway. While Kumerow played a big role on ST, he also on rare occasions was used as a WR when called upon. From that standpoint, the one guy on the Bills I'd like to see them not bring back as T Jones as he's never used for anything but ST

Kind of interesting that no Diggs restructure and this tweet about un-following Bills?? Is there something going on here?? -
Will be interesting to see how he's replaced. Two things he provided that not many others had were size and speed and those are two things that can't be taught. But he never quite lived up to expectations either. Is interesting that many in the media appreciated him and talked him up much more than people here do. Either they are much smarter than the arm chair GM's here or were all blowing smoke and will quickly find out the Bears way over paid. Should be somewhat easier to replace him than when he arrived as overall more experience around the MLB position, but can they overcome the size as do think he shut down passing lanes more than realized. It always makes me nervous too whenever a player in the last year of his contract has a career year. He certainly isn't the first to do that, recall Shaq Lawson "saving the best for last", couple years later he's back, but walking with a limp from having such a fat wallet.

One of the articles I read also listed him as a strong possibility to come here

Way to measure value in Free Agents??

Could include some not likely to achieve incentives??

Interesting article in the Athletic on value of free agents. They looked at teams over the past 3 years, how much they spent and the return on value of those players. They admitted there wasn't a super scientific way to measure value so they graded them using a Pro Football Reference called Approximate Value (AV). The differences in amount of money spent across all teams varies wildly. Basically the Jet's Fish, and Jax were all in the top six on $$ spent, but in the bottom 4 in value returned. Bills were kind of in the middle of the pack in $$ spent and value returned. I know Green Bay hasn't spent much on free agents, but their total is crazy low compared to rest of league. Because their total spent was so low, it actually gave them the best return on value, but may be a bit skewed due to spending such a low amount of money. Two teams that didn't spent too much, but got a good return and have been fairly good teams were Cowboys and 49ers https://theathletic.com/4299883/2023/03/13/nfl-free-agency-value-rankings/

Recall reading that one of the issues they had was right after they traded for Hines, Allan got hurt, then the blizzard. So left few if any practices for Allen to work with Hines to get on same page. Seem to recall reading that by later Nov or so the two of them had only 3 or 4 practices together so was hard to be on same page.

Yeah nothing posted on this that Settle restructured his deal. Think your comment went over the heads of most here, but was subtle . Can't recall where I read it that deal was re-done, probably was on BN?? -
2023 Early Schedule Notes & Thoughts
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to corta765's topic in The Stadium Wall
One small clarification and maybe you were implying this, 4:05 games are NOT in the prime time window only 4:25 games. 4:05 starts are regional games just like the 1:00 except usually have a west coast home team. Those games are usually only viewed in the two cites of the teams playing, plus teams that had a 1:00 game that was on whatever network has the doubleheader game that week, so the 4:05 game would be shown instead of a 1:00 game on TV opposite their own game. -
I was kidding when I said that. The problem with him is I don't think he knows what he wants. He may think a fresh start with a new team is what he needs, but can see in 2 months or so the desire may be gone again. And then whatever team he signs with or traded to is on the hook for the remainder of his contract.
-
The other good thing about all these cuts is, it depresses Edmunds worth too as more well seasoned good competition he's up against.
-
Answer is it depends on what happens between now and then WRT Edmunds and in FA. If Edmund's is gone the picking a LB may make alot more sense. Add to that do they sign a good FA guard and WR? If so then the two positions on offense they need a starter for are replaced so then going defense may make more sense.

So I did read the article. I didn't see anywhere that it stated Miller asked to work with the Bills but they declined or that the Bills asked Miller to work with them and he declined. Going on his own certainly is a better way to network with more people from different perspectives and "Coaching trees" Yes Florio thinks it's odd, can't say I disagree or agree wit him, it's just his take and wrote a column about it. He was drafted by Elway at Denver, for all we know, Elway may have told him at one time that this exactly what he had done years back maybe while still playing. Social media has changed the world in that everyone knows what everyone else is doing all the time if you're somewhat famous. 30 years ago, Elway could have done the same and no one would have even noticed. Or at least not maybe the 5 people covering the combine back then. He also has the status that allows him to do this whereas many who may want to can't. As Florio pointed out, it does sound a bit like Miller want's to follow the Elway route and become a GM without working his way up the latter, doing something like this, would help him there.

Who Will Be Next Year's Scapegoat?
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to ArtVandalay's topic in The Stadium Wall
I'm just responding to your comment that you knew what their goal was the past three years. While I do agree with you the past two season their goal very likely was the SB, not so sure 3 years ago. That would have been a pretty big jump. And this past year while I certainly do think the SB was their goal in Sept and Oct, by the end of the seasons between the injuries, the Hamlin situation, blizzards, Kim, wonder if they still flt that way. Publicly and to the team itself would they state that, no. But privately did Beane in particular feel that way deep down. That their chance to win wasn't that high. -
Who Will Be Next Year's Scapegoat?
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to ArtVandalay's topic in The Stadium Wall
That's interesting that you know what the teams actual goals were every year. When does Terry send them to you, can you forward me his email? There are 32 teams in the NFL. While all 32 will publicly tell you their goal is to win the SB every year, realistically behind closed doors, teams likely discuss where they really are. Was this past year to win the SB and did they feel they had a good shot, sure. Prior particularly 3 years ago reaching the AFC championship game may have exceeded their expectations. Even this past year, by the end of the season, not so sure the team even believed they could win it between all the injuries and other things that happened. So the only goals and expectations they didn't meet were yours. and most fans here. But you're not speaking for the team. -
Pressure is on McBeane - PFT discussion
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to balln's topic in The Stadium Wall
Completely agree with the example of Reid. Who are you going to replace him with? This isn't college where you can buy out some other coaches existing contract. So your choice is another retread who recently got fired like was done with Rex Ryan, McCarthy, etc. Or you take a flyer on a new and upcoming OC or DC and it were a DC again this board would likely blow up. But more of these up and comers don't exceed as a HC than succeed. Look at he ones in Carolina and AZ. Even McVay the boy wonder is a bit questionable as has been up and down a bit. Maybe every ten years or so a situation comes around where a guy like Sean Payton becomes available, but Denver had to give up draft picks to get him and his record other than one SB win his record isn't much better than McDermott's. Will be interesting to see how Payton does in Denver as very limited draft picks the next two seasons . By the time they can get young guys up to speed, Wilson even if Payton can straighten him out, may be too old.
