49ers could be our trading partner
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to Niagara Dude's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
how about San Diego and Ryan Leaf, Who drafted Rick Meier #2 was it? And yes those weren't trades, but my point is trading up gives you as much chance at drafting the next Ryan Leaf as it does Carson Wentz -

So what makes you think trading up gives you a franchise QB? The only thing it gets you is for the next year, you can tell everyone you have your QB until he starts playing alot. I'm not saying TT is the answer and they should stick with him, but this whole trading up thing is pretty risky as opposed to filling a number of holes with the picks you have. Are there any guaranteed successes out there? And I get it, if you don't try you'll never know. But one thing I'm pretty certain of based on past history, of all the QB's taken next year in the 1st round, within 3 to 4 year close to half will be backups and within 5 years likely at least one if not two will probably be out of football completely. -
Here's what I think is even a stupider one than that. A D lineman jumps off-sides, but not so far off-sides that ref blows it dead. So the DL is heading right for the QB and likely will sack him. A O lineman hooks (holds) the guy to stop him from sacking the QB The result, Off-setting penalties. To me thta'sa really dumb one.

No idea what to think of this saints game
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to Steptide's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Because it just doesn't happen very often anymore. The difference between the best teams in the league and the worst is rather small. So teams lose games unexpectedly. And since the Saints haven't lost in 6 weeks, they are due. Many are thinking the Bills have a decent shot at making the playoffs. Will they make it who knows, but are they really one of the 12 best teams in the league, or are they maybe the 20 best team in the league? But the difference between the 8th best and the 20th best isn't so huge, that with just a little luck they could be in there. -

Hard to win 7 games in a row, they are due for a loss. -
With the game on Christmas Eve can see many season ticket holders wanting to sell. however as was pointed out the rules there in NE sounds makes it tough. The other big difference is comparing between the OP's comparison to Atlanta is that's in the south. People down south only care about SEC football. You can easily get Falcons tickets, but not Bulldogs, or Fins tickets but not Hurricanes.

I'd be surprised to see the same team get offense and defensive coordinator award. I could see the D coord award going to Jax

Sure and Carr could have done as well as his brother. And Watson could be another Ryan Leaf. In fact he still may be, 6 games doesn't exactly define a career. So yeah you can get guys without having the #1 overall pick, but they could just as easily be a bust. No one knows. And how was picking Carr or Watson any different than the picks of Losman and EJ? They just didn't work out, but in foresight (as opposed to hindsight) they were just as good of a pick. Maybe slightly higher than they should have went, but not by a huge amount.

Since 2000 the Bills have signed Rob Johnson, Flutie, Bledsoe, Fitz, to name most but not all drafted Losman, Edwards, Manual. They've tried many different things and none have worked out well. Does that mean they have terrible scouts? Yup I guess you're right, but if bad scouting is based on drafting QB's then just about every team in the league has terrible scouting . Which was what Kelly's point was. If it's so easy to find these gems, teams with good scouts would have drafted multiple good ones. But it's not it's mostly just luck. Some years having the #1 overall pick might yield a good one, some years that doesn't even help. Then there's the cry you'll here from some "If Beane" can't find a franchise QB, then he needs to be fired" Then we can bring in some assistant GM from some other team who has failed at drafting QB's.

Re-Sign Jordan Matthews?
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to Dkollidas's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'd like to see them resign him, but agree too much like Jones and Jones will probably be much cheaper. If he finds he's not getting what he thinks, maybe they will . think WR will be interesting overall in the off-season. what do the Giants do with OBJ, Sammy?? These are two big names who expect real big $$, but OBJ has just had way too many off field things going on, and Sammy even with a very good QB looks average. (unless this past week is a big sign of things to come. -
I feel good about this game for two big reasons. The Bills are home, see there's a high of 43 predicted for a dome team, that should help 2nd thing is NO has won 6 straight, rarely these days do teams win 7 in a row as there just isn't that big of a difference between the best team and the worst team in the league. So that I feel favors the Bills.

While I agree with your logic, the problem here is everyone expected the Bills to only shoot in the 90's all year. But they came out with those great rounds, so now wonder, were they just somehow lucky all those weeks and the 90's are going to be the rule. We'll find out over the next couple of weeks. Up north you often don't play golf all winter, how often is one of your best rounds for the year the first time you play, it seems mainly because you don't tend to think as much what you're doing. -
Initially I was going to agree with the "O'Leary has an awful fumble and now we need to change a rule' crowd, but after reading your reasoning about QB slides, concussions, etc. regardless of what happened last night I will agree the game has changed and maybe the rule should change to college. On the other hand the pro rule does add more excitement which I do think the NFL tends to need more than the college game does.

So what exactly was TT supposed to have done better? 29 of 40 for 285, 2 TD and 0 int. And he's a big part of us losing. I certainly don't think TT is the second coming of Brady, but we could be much worse too. This hatred of him is really laughable.
-
That's the problem. Most teams don't have one and never will as there just aren't very many to go around. So swapping out TT will likely just still leave us not having one, and good chance even worse off. 29/40 for 285 doesn't sound like he was the problem here with many passes to WR. Is he great, going to HOF, no but build a team around him.

Major concerns loom large going forward
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to SaviorPeterman's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
While it may sound easy to do to fans, maybe these things just can't be done on these short Thursday night games?? The entire game planning is dummied down, etc. Not trying to make excuses, but it is what it is with Thursdays. And it just effects the road team much more. -

IMO the 4 you mention are the only ones really completely worth the money they are paid. You mention the rest are streaky, I question if it's more a factor of many of these guys are being paid like top elite franchise QB's but can't carry a team on their own. With the big $$ they are getting not enough money left over to pay enough others to keep the team really great. Russell Wilson won on his rookie contracts, Cam just resigned the year they went to the SB. Even Rodgers only SB win was at the beginning of contract #2. Since he's made the really big $$, the Packers have more losses than wins in playoffs. The only guy to defy these rules is Brady who has taken less money than he could command. Helps when your wife makes more than you do. He's just playing for gas money! -
Very difficult to do both in todays NFL with extremely limited practice time. I read the backup QB #2 guy typically get about 1/2 dozen snaps each week with the 1st stringers. #3 QB likely none. So how do you develop 2, pretty much impossible to ever figure out if they actually can play. IMO better off developing one and have a more experienced vet as the #3 like they do today with Webb

I think you're still giving the OP way to much credit. This is all about the OP needing to look smart and right. And once you come out strong about something negative that doesn't exactly pan out, the only thing you can do is keep doubling down on it as odds say at some point you'll hit on it. Couple that with other doing the same, so they can then all feed each others posts and convincing themselves they are all the smart ones. Or they are just complete trolls
-
You don't name names, but "reading between the lines" it appears in #2 the QB you refer to is TT. I don't hate TT, realize he has limitations, but your comment about being maligned by the national media from what I hear and see isn't really true. The only place he's maligned is right here and some of the local media.

Make the cuts to get the comp pick
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to The juice's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
If we were a CB yes he'd be big, but he's a WR and as WR go, that's average size, maybe slightly above but nothing special
