Was Micah Hyde's injury the key to the Bills' season?
Nextmanup replied to Giuseppe Tognarelli's topic in The Stadium Wall
No! We were MASSIVELY outreached against the Bengals. We always will be at the end of the season, that's when you run into the best teams with the best coaches. You can really only measure McDermott with playoff football. -
You're nuts. It is 10 times harder to win a Cup than win a SB. If the Bills can't do it first, something is seriously wrong with McDermott and his staff.

We did wear the all blacks (that I love so dearly and which seem to being used more and more and more) and we did indeed score 6 ! Hopefully we can get 6 tonight in Dallas... With the Bills bowing out, the Sabres just got even more relevant in my world. If we can only climb into a close playoff race, it would make things so much more interesting.

I think the Simms comment was just a generic "I'm not trying to make enemies in this profession" kind of thing. Like he doesn't want to be known as the talking head calling for other's heads. It's probably a smart approach. They aren't talking about "talent," they are talking about elite talent that makes you a potential SB champion. Bills fans aren't used to competing at this level, but it's different at the top. Just showing up in the playoffs is not good enough if you want to win it all.

Just watched it; what I found most interesting is Florio basically saying that if this had not been such a crazy, emotionally trying year for the team, McDermott might well be gone after that performance yesterday. You suggest things like that HERE and a lot of Bills fans talk of you being INSANE... Nice to see a big name in the mainstream media getting this out there. They both agreed that lots of folks will be on the hot seat next year... And I am wondering if we won't get a new coordinator out of this. We have fallen way behind in the arms race regarding offensive playmaking stars in the AFC. This team needs a fairly substantial remake this offseason. And it's a BAD year for free agency; not a lot of stuff out there.

Michael Thomas or Odell Beckham Jr.?
Nextmanup replied to thenorthremembers's topic in The Stadium Wall
Possibly the most ignorant post I've seen here in 6 months. And with this place, that's saying a LOT. If anyone could play WR, we wouldn't have been beaten so badly yesterday. We have 1 real WR and that's it. -
Bengals will be the team to beat for years to come

And their QB is as good as anyone and plays a very low key, easily repeatable, style of football. He reminds me of a young Tom Brady. He's more intellectual than physical in his play, and he can throw the ball where he wants it to go, pretty much all the time. The OP didn't suggest they won't eventually run into problems. Everyone will. But they are setup well right now. Our "cheap Allen" window is closing and we didn't get it done. -
All he said is he's not OK with losing, we didn't play up to our standard, and it's easier for others to criticize HIM for his comments rather than criticize the actual loss. I agree with all of it! We need more dudes like him apparently.

I think the media will back off the Bills hype a train a bit
Nextmanup replied to bills6969's topic in The Stadium Wall
They already have. We are probably the 5th or 6th best team in the league right now. Have to put SF, PHI, KC, and CIN all ahead of us...maybe a few more. We are not keeping up in the AFC offensive arms race; we need way more talent and weapons on offense.. Like 2 or 3 before next season starts. -
Because they are "Football guys" and McDermott in particular is a defense first sort of person. It's why an offensive minded HC would be a lot better. This game is about clever scheming on offense now. The whole "you win with defense" thing is long gone. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if he takes a frigging defensive lineman FIRST in the draft this year...saying we need to re-vamp things on the DL. It's like flushing the pick down the toilet.

Saffold said guys were "exhausted" this week and "out of gas"
Nextmanup replied to Einstein's topic in The Stadium Wall
Garbage! Eric Wood played in this league for a long time and he was on the field 10 feet away from the players during pre-game warmups and he said (today on gr-55) that without question, the enthusiasm, energy, passion WAS THERE TO SEE. He said it's hard to sustain that in the game when things don't go your way, which is more or less what Josh said in some of his post-game comments as well. That's fair enough from your perspective as a fan. I pray to God the players on the team do NOT see things the same way. This is not a fun distraction for them. -
I think a fairly large portion of the fanbase wants to retain McDermott, simply because the Bills have been a horrible franchise for most of their existence and McDermott is way better than almost all coaches we've ever had. That's not the right mindset for evaluation here. The benchmark is not how he compares to past Bills coaches; the benchmark is how does he compare to the best coaches in the game today.

I'd be ALL IN FAVOR of somehow getting rid of Von Miller and his salary, if that's at all possible. He was the fitting of the "last piece" to win a championship. And that didn't happen. We are now in retool mode, and need to build up again. Von is not the sort of player this team needs, NOW.

1/23 Bills Media Availability - Coverage
Nextmanup replied to Beck Water's topic in The Stadium Wall
What is that first Thad Brown tweet about McKenzie? It ends by saying "McKenzie said its the same questions everyone is asking. And he will ask." What does that mean? Who will ask whom about what? I hate twitter. -
It's more interesting to discuss McDermott's use of timeouts in general. He is terrible at burning them; rarely has them when he needs them to stop the clock at the end of halves, and he LOVES to call what he thinks is a "clever" timeout right before a big 3rd down play on defense. He wants to see the play the offense is going to run, or at least the formation, then he calls the T/O and prepares for it. I assume opposing teams know this, and so they run the REAL play after McDermott's timeout. LOL T/O usage is just one of many weak points in McDermott's ability to run a team during a game.

I'm on board with retaining Beane, and going from there. Wouldn't mind seeing McDermott, and both coordinators replaced. I'd prefer the HC to be an offensive guy, like the rest of the league's good teams.

Orlovsky: Bills aren't as talented offensively as we thought
Nextmanup replied to Billz4ever's topic in The Stadium Wall
Lots of us have been talking about this for most of this season. It's true. Team needs a pretty solid retool this off-season. -
It's not over yet! But I fear we are more likely to regress next year than actually improve, or even remain at this year's level. The team is going to change around a good bit, and it needs to, if we are going to get better. This off-season may dictate whether Beane and/or McDermott are still here in a few years.
-
I agree with you, but Josh is NOT a generational talent! I keep reading this here. I can't think of a generational talent at QB in the NFL in the last....generation...other than maybe Tom Brady.
-
I don't disagree with anything you are saying. This all contributes to what I just said in another thread--namely, the Bills are more likely to be WORSE next year than BETTER. I'll be surprised if we improve upon this season, i.e., appear in the AFC championship, or better. It will take a lot of clever scheming and personnel moves to get back to where we were this season, and this season wasn't good enough! At least Beane is a smart guy and I do have faith in him.
-
This point was really stressed hard this morning at GR-55....Jeremy and Howard Simon. Their point was that the other elite teams left playing (read Bengals and Chiefs in particular) know how to get guys open, almost AT WILL. KC continued to have effective offense even with Mahomes on one leg. Andy Reid can get Diggs open 27 different ways, and I think Diggs thinks about this. Is there no experienced, solid, smart OC type guy floating around out there? It seems like Dorsey is easily upgraded. And we don't have time to sit around and let him get an education on how to do his job. The clock is ticking on Josh.

Is McDermott Really Marty Shottenheimer in Disguise?
Nextmanup replied to Barnaby Wilde's topic in The Stadium Wall
Absolutely! Some Bills fans are absolutely delirious. -
How many Josh Allen prime years do they want to waste?
Nextmanup replied to LabattBlue's topic in The Stadium Wall
Well that says more about you than Josh Allen. Some pro athletes absolutely are only about themselves and the cash! Others actively take pay cuts and move teams/cities to be AWAY from their families for the chance to win a championship because they take pride in what they do, and their legacy. It's unfair of you to assume Josh doesn't give a crap about football, and just wants the cash. In Buffalo, we just saw a player with all the cash demanding that chat with Pegula, so to speak. Jack Eichel....being lousy and making a lot of money wasn't good enough for him. I bet Josh is pissed off too. We need a MUCH MORE COMPETENT offensive coordinator, with a LOT OF EXPERIENCE. Josh Allen knows this. Did any interesting names get fired this year? In all seriousness, I do agree with your comment about going backwards. We are more likely to be WORSE next year than BETTER, depending on how sweeping the changes are, and how effective they are. Beane has a lot of work to do this off-season, and the team needs to be fairly seriously tweaked for next season. At least it will give us an interesting off-season to follow, I guess. Would have rather won the game yesterday.
