I would give Daboll and big raise and try to keep him
Nextmanup replied to Miyagi-Do Karate's topic in The Stadium Wall
During his weekly appearance on WGR-550 this week, Eric Wood suggested that the league is currently behind the times in their thinking on losing coordinators. His point was that the loss of an OC like Daboll could be huge. He suggested the day will come when teams learn to pay these guys "5 times" what they are making now, as an incentive to stay with the team and forget about that HC opportunity elsewhere. It was suggested during the conversation that Daboll may be the SECOND MOST IMPORTANT PERSON in the entire organization, after Josh Allen. It's an interesting thought---pay Daboll a ton and convince him to stay. The problem is, he obviously has HC aspirations or he wouldn't have taken all these interviews last year and this year too. He clearly has the ambition to become a HC. So perhaps a massive pay increase would not keep him here... ...which raises an even more interesting question! SHOULD THE BILLS FIRE MCDERMOTT AND MAKE DABOLL THE HEAD COACH HERE? Honestly, I don't think that would be a loss at all. The system would continue as it has been which is hugely helpful to Josh, we'd still do everything the same way, and it is MUCH BETTER having an offensive guy as HC over a defensive guy to boot! Get rid of Frazier too and hire Vic Fangio to be the new DC, and let Daboll hire the OC of his choice and have a lot of say in what that OC does as well. I think that's a REALLY interesting idea. -
Does that disagree with you? I'll see to it that all of his posts are deleted ASAP. 😂 The fanbase is currently divided by those who more or less agree with you, and those who think this is foolish. Why? Because not enough time has passed yet to make this determination, especially for the fans who disagree with you. When will this change and when will the fanbase be more united? When enough time passes and we still haven't made it to a SB appearance. Another couple years of a playoff loss and many more fans will slide to your side of the spectrum! Then again, if we win a SB, the whole issue becomes moot and that's great! Wait a while! If we continue to lose in the playoffs, pre-SB, the issue of whether or not McDermott should go will get a LOT more interesting.

Urban Meyer - "Worst experience in my professional life“
Nextmanup replied to Draconator's topic in The Stadium Wall
You hit on an important point, which is the way to beat KC in Arrowhead in the playoffs is to NOT PLAY KC IN ARROWHEAD IN THE PLAYOFFS. I.E., do MORE during the regular season and lock up home field advantage. We easily could and should have done that this year, and failed to do it with mediocre play. The season was lost there, not in Arrowhead. -
Yes but they never should have rushed 4 in that situation! It was a total coaching breakdown. There was no way 4 DLmen were going to get home when Mahomes had to work THAT FAST. They should have put maybe 1 or 2 guys on the line, if that, and flood the middle of the field with defensive backs or anyone who can fly. Defending the boundaries was also a tactical error.

Looks like the call to squib may not have made it to Bass
Nextmanup replied to Reed83HOF's topic in The Stadium Wall
It's a total coaching failure, and by the way, McDermott could have commented on this without mentioning a single name and throwing no one under the bus. Reporter: "Sean, what's the deal with the kickoff? Did you tell Bass to kick it out of the end zone?" McD: "No, the coaching staff called for a different type of kick, not the one that was made. The kick we got resulted in a breakdown in the chain of communication, and that's as much as I want to say. Other than to say that ultimately, as HC, I am responsible for that chain of communication and ultimately the error rests on my shoulders." SEE! NOT HARD SEAN! AND NOW WE ALL KNOW THEY DIDN'T CALL FOR A TOUCHBACK. I don't care where the message failed, if that's what happened! Just tell me if the coaching staff actually thought the touchback was the right idea! -
It will be discussed thirty years from now and beyond. "Wide Right" is now 31 years old and it still feels like yesterday.

Beane anticipates Cole Beasley being back next season
Nextmanup replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall
He might be back, he might be gone, but don't think that anything Beane said today has anything to do with it! They will do what they will do. Stay tuned. -
Are we overplaying this team's chances had we won?
Nextmanup replied to Success's topic in The Stadium Wall
The majority here are, but they always are overestimating the Bills chances. Some of us have kept it realistic. I think we would have beaten the Bengals easily, would probably beat the 49ers but you never know, and the Rams game would be a total toss-up. Could go either way and play out in any way for either team IMO. -
We can agree they were either confused, there the game, or at a minimum, made some highly baffling decisions. You can see why McDermott doesn't want to talk about it ALL ALL---as it was obviously a colossal cluster-fudge. It's completely inexcusable and it cost us the game. Rushing FOUR MEN when you know Mahomes has to get rid of the ball immediately? Hell, rush zero or 1 man and put everyone back clogging up the middle of the field. If that gives Mahomes ALL DAY to throw the ball, great! Let him take ALL DAY. The game would have ended 13 seconds later regardless.

Coaching or Drafting? - The Defensive Front
Nextmanup replied to ThurmanThomasEnglishMuffin's topic in The Stadium Wall
IF they do, someone should be fired! You don't "get home" on Mahomes. You don't beat him with an edge rusher. You beat him by outscoring him. We gave it a solid shot and SHOULD HAVE WON. The coaching staff let us down, not the defensive line. (Don't get me wrong, the DL is terrible---they are all busts to varying degrees). Spend assets in the draft on OFFENSE where it impacts GAME RESULTS. We need a much better OL and the WR corps will be changed this off-season too. I would say we need an elite TE, but Knox had a breakout season this year and I think he's OK. -
But first we must endure 1,348 mock draft simulation and prediction threads. If you are a Sabres/hockey fan, this is a good time to sink into the NHL. We also have the winter Olympics soon.

Sullivan: Bills' McDermott choked away Super Bowl-caliber season
Nextmanup replied to QCity's topic in The Stadium Wall
I hope you are right, but honestly, I do NOT think Frazier will end up a HC and I do NOT think McDermott will effectively fire him this off-season. I'd be surprised if he isn't here next year. If he is GONE, I'd be surprised that McDermott was that proactive, but I'd love the surprise. -
It's worth pointing out that a non-touchback kick off was the preferred play by the Bills. The touchback kickoff was the WRONG PLAY by the Bills. HOWEVER--the touchback only increased KC's win probability from 3.4% to 4.1%, at least according to Brian Burke's model! Still an OBJECTIVELY WRONG ERROR BY THE BILLS, but one with a very small impact on the game. The real talking point is how incorrectly we played defense on the ensuing plays. We played as though our coaching staff thought we were ahead by more than 3 points and didn't really defend a FG attempt against an opponent with 3 timeouts. It was baffling.

If Brady retires, would you want Gronk for one season here?
Nextmanup replied to Peace Frog's topic in The Stadium Wall
I think he's past Kelce levels of playing, and I don't think he'd come here. Would I take him for 1 season? ABSOLUTELY---he's the best TE of all time, and he's a Buffalonian. Why the hell would you NOT take him? Because he owns the Bills?! LOL -
SB Nation article - Josh a mega star
Nextmanup replied to Royale with Cheese's topic in The Stadium Wall
I think a LOT of athletes use that sort of psychology for motivation. "We don't get any respect" and that sort of thing. -
The problem is the Giants can't hire BOTH of them to be their head coach. I think Daboll goes, Frazier stays. I hope I'm wrong. I'd prefer it the other way around.
-
"Screw both of them." Where does that come from? Why the anger? I think you are missing the point of the thread--it shows that top FAs do think about going where they can win and ANYONE would probably want to go where that Josh Allen guy plays---b/c where you find him, you will probably find a lot of wins and success.

How many chances does McDermott have left?
Nextmanup replied to Igotbills's topic in The Stadium Wall
I think what you write here is just about exactly the correct way to view the situation, at this point in time. Heck, we may win the SB next year or the following year, and this discussion will quietly die. But if a couple more years pass with disappointing playoff losses, it may well be time to figure out how to replace McDermott. TONS of Bills fans will forever be opposed to the idea, simply b/c we have had so many horrid coaches in our history, and I think most will assume the next coach will be a bust and destroy what McDermott has built. It doesn't have to be that way, folks! -
What are the top three worst losses in franchise history?
Nextmanup replied to VaMilBill's topic in The Stadium Wall
That MNF Patriots loss is truly horrible--so was the one against Dallas. But I don't know how anyone can put a regular season loss in the Top 3! I mean, we lost 4 Super Bowls in a row in differing forms of gut wrenching nausea. Those all have to rank higher than ANY regular season loss, don't they? 🤔 -
What I find so interesting about this is that for all the hype about coaching, scheming, and so on, there is still ENORMOUS room in the game for athletes to simply go out there, ad lib a little, and make plays. Run to the open spot and I'll throw you the ball. It doesn't have to be a lot more complicated than that. Makes me realize how important having the horses is. Gotta have the athletes...that's 98% of the battle. This is encouraging, as I firmly believe Daboll will be gone in a few days. With Josh and guys like Diggs, we should be OK. Your comments echo what I just wrote myself. It's not nearly as complicated as some would have you believe. It's football--not AI development.

Wrong and wronger! Taking a LB of all things with a first round pick is foolish; trading UP to get him would be doubling down on stupidity. Never trade up unless you are moving to the top of the draft to take what you believe to be your franchise QB. We already have that; we should be trading DOWN all over the place for MORE picks and using them shrewdly to take under-evaluated talent. Turn 3 picks into 5 if you can. I do love the idea of trading Edmunds, if you can actually get a team to dance with you. Not sure you can.

I don't think Josh can grow a real beard. Might be the only thing he can't do. 😜

Look at Dan Marino! I would imagine Miami Dolphins fans (all 17 of them) thought they had a bunch of Super Bowls in their future too when they got a hold of that cowboy. And he took the team to the Super Bowl right away in his second season. They lost, and he never went back again in a 17 season career. Can't take anything for granted.
