The Next Pandemic: SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19

It’s going to be with us for quite a while unfortunately. -
The Next Pandemic: SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19
oldmanfan replied to Hedge's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Go read what SDS put up about what should be done with this forum. You are a perfect example of just wanting to exist in your own echo chamber. As a society we all have to coexist and come together to fight this thing. We can do that by all of us pitching in and doing the things the experts advise, and that the science and data support. -
No one in the audience asked that question. Perhaps it is because the source of those are at issue. I find it highly questionable at best that some guy all of a sudden found a hard drive in the trash that had such things, and miraculously right before the election. You don't find that odd?

The Next Pandemic: SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19

They are based on the data that are in peer reviewed journals. and government employees do not have a profit motive. I don't work in virology or infectious diseases so you are correct, I have not done independent studies. You seem to want to tear down the entire scientific community, a community that has has discovered cures for diseases since the times of Lister and Pasteur. -
The Next Pandemic: SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19
oldmanfan replied to Hedge's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
You want me to look up names of scientists at the CDC who work on this? academic medical centers? Pharmaceutical companies? really? As for profit motives, pharmaceutical companies have them. But I am on an FDA panel and I can tell you I have to submit volumes of material every year to show that I do not have competing outside interests. And government employees like Dr. Fauci, if they develop a treatment or such as a government employee, means that rights to that are the government's. -
The Next Pandemic: SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19

My opinions are based on the science. If there is anything worse than the deaths that have occurred from Covid and the economic impact, it is that the pandemic has shown us that we have a society that increasingly refuses to accept things like data and fact and science. That may be more dangerous than anything for the long term. We are free men. I express my freedom by doing what I can to help make sure my neighbor doesn't get this disease. What are you doing? -

The Next Pandemic: SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19

If we all do our part and help each other, then hopefully not. But you see what's going on now, infection rates are climbing in many states. Because people aren't listening. -

How about people at the CDC? How about folks like Dr. Fauci who is the world authority of infectious disease? How about experts in epidemiology and other infection disease and public health experts who have spent their professional lives dedicated to figuring these things out? -
The Next Pandemic: SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19

From a national standpoint? Tell everyone to wear a mask. Why would that be hard to do from a national standpoint? tell everyone to wash their hands often. How is that hard to accomplish from a national standpoint? Tell everyone to distance when it is possible to do so. Why is that hard to do from a national standpoint? I get the effect on the economy and such. My daughter is an actor and her field has been really hit hard by this. But in my community businesses are open, churches are allowing folks in again. They just need to do those three things. Here's my question: why be so damn stubborn? -
The Next Pandemic: SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19
oldmanfan replied to Hedge's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
What Biden has said is that he will listen to the experts. What the experts have said is that if we all do our part and wear masks, wash our hands, distance when we can we can help prevent spread and actually allow things to open up more. -

I don't know why about zinc; in general it has anti-viral properties but by itself likely will not curtail this epidemic. And drop the fear porn stuff, this is a highly contagious virus that has affected and killed millions across the globe. -
The Next Pandemic: SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19
oldmanfan replied to Hedge's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Yeah, and they didn't, so get over it. The way to eradicate this virus right now is to deprive the virus of a host. The way you try to do that in the absence of a vaccine is to keep the virus from spreading, and the way you do that is with good hand washing, distancing, and masks. I am not arguing that we should not all try to keep healthy immune systems, diets and such but the horse is out of the barn right now. -

I take zinc myself. Evidence suggests zinc has antiviral properties. -

here's another big word. Mitigate. Masks are not 100% effective and no one has said they are. But they are a part of a strategy to mitigate spread. -
I watched both. Stephanopoulos challenged Biden on the court and several other issues, nd the audience asked pretty pointed questions. Guthrie did something Trump and his supporters don't like; she held hi to account and made him actually answer questions. When you have a candidate that refuses to answer questions then he gets what he deserves.

The Next Pandemic: SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19
oldmanfan replied to Hedge's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Let's hope they're on solid footing. There have been a couple cases now where Phase 3 trials have had to be stopped for detection of illnesses. We should all do a better job with our general health. That would be a great thing to work on for the future, but in the present we have a viral pandemic that requires all of to work cooperatively to eradicate. -
The Next Pandemic: SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19
oldmanfan replied to Hedge's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
There is abundant data, both experimental and epidemiologic, indicating that mask wearing helps prevent spread of virus by holding down spread of droplets and aerosols. The data is irrefutable, yet people refuse to accept it because this has turned into a dumb political thing instead of what it is, a public health crisis. -
What would you like to see be done here?
oldmanfan replied to SDS's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
I come on here from time to time. As an Independent, what I find coming here is an inability or unwillingness to have civil discourse. To me the PPP is mostly a forum for primarily right wing individuals, and many of them do not really want to debate; they want to share their opinions with each other without being challenged. There are a few from the other side of the aisle who have come in recently, and they go over the top too often. So to answer your question, I would abandon your current format and make the political stuff into clubs. While in an ideal world we could have a part of TBD where honest and considered political debate could occur, it is clear that won't happen here. It is a microcosm of our society where politics has devolved to a point where the fringe elements have the loudest voices, and those like me in the middle are left shaking our heads. Making it into clubs would let those of similar minds support each other, regardless of how narrow minded their opinions. From what I see here, that's really what folks on both sides of the political aisle want, so give it to them. I'll stick to football. -
Should the Bills bring in Marcel Dareus?

I do not believe a big tub of non-motivated goo is the answer. I would like to see Zimmer elevated. -
After a Big Bills Loss - Do You Avoid Internet/Media?
oldmanfan replied to Irv's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I don’t. Not the next day. I’ve learned to avoid the thread during the game. The number of hacks who just come on to over-react and yell about how bad the team is based on one play has become absurd. -
Amy Coney Barrett
oldmanfan replied to Trump_is_Mentally_fit's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
She will be the next Scalia. And the world did not come to an end with Scalia on the court. If this court tries to take away things like the rights of gays to marry there will be a big political backlash, Democrats will take over the Executivexand Legislative branches, and when Thomas and Alito retire or otherwise leave then two more liberal justices will replace them and such rights restored. Unfortunately the courts have become a political arm of the parties in power instead of meeting their constitutional function. -

Well he was a Yankee and I hate ALL Yankees!

Oh yeah. I hated him because I was rooting for the Sox, but he was one of the best to ever play 2nd base.
