I don't think many are arguing that Peterman is the long term answer. My argument to start Peterman (now that McCarron is hurt) is: 1. Allen has impressed in limited appearances, but would benefit from more time learning 2. The OL is a weakness and is liable to get whomever plays QB injured 3. Allen has worked hard to improve his footwork to help with accuracy, but if he plays behind a weak OL facing a lot of pass rush, he is likely to regress in that footwork 4. The receiving group is a definite weakness that combined with the OL problems will make life very difficult for whomever plays QB this season. Even if Allen's superior athletic traits seem to give the team a better chance today, I'd resist the temptation to hurry him into the lineup.

I have been pleasantly surprised by Josh Allen's play so far. I think he has a chance to be a good long-term answer at QB. He might even give the team the best hope to win in the short run. However, this team is not built to win now. The OL looks like it could be a big problem and WR is surely an under-talented position. While Allen has looked poised against 2nd and 3rd team defenses, he still is learning. Given the weaknesses everywhere on offense and that this team is in no way a serious contender this year, I think it would be smart to have Peterman be the sacrificial lamb while Allen learns more. The combination of poor OL play and a weak receiving group is going to get another QB killed like McCarron was mauled tonight.

Question: Can passing accuracy issues be fixed?
OldTimer1960 replied to GreggTX's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I saw a couple passes that weren’t close, though I would speculate that he and the receiver weren’t on the same page on those occasions. Other than that, I was pleased with his passes. -
Yes, he showed size and a good arm. That’s what Josh Allen will show as well. My only point was to have some patience- and that the patience should last more than a few games - and even multiple seasons.

I know that we are all interested in seeing how the rookie QBs look, but remember it is HARD to play QB in the NFL. There is a learning curve and it isn't prudent to give up on a young QB early. Troy Aikman had a very good career, in in his first 3 NFL seasons combined he threw 31 TDs and 46 INTS. For some (most) of these guys it takes some time.

Shaq Lawson on roster bubble
OldTimer1960 replied to bobobonators's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
He does seem to have gotten the message and is reported to have shed some significant weight. Let's hope that he stays in shape and doesn't back-slide and also that the reduced weight improves his quickness. I think I remember an interview with the Clemson coach when Lawson was drafted. In that interview, he pretty much said that Lawson wasn't a big fan of working in the gym. Hopefully, that has changed. -
He was not a bad player at all - it just hurts thinking of who they passed on to take him.

5-2: Eric Galko Reviews the Bills' Draft on WGR
OldTimer1960 replied to 26CornerBlitz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Agreed. He has a bit of vested interest in saying that a guy that doesn’t fit his model is less than successful. i am completely confident that Josh Rosen will look better in year 1 and maybe year 2. If Allen doesn’t ultimately surpass Rosen, it will be a draft error to the extent Rosen is better. -
He was a rookie and lots of rookie receivers struggle. I don’t KNOW that he will improve, but it won’t surprise me if he does.

Vegas over/under rookie QB starts
OldTimer1960 replied to HappyDays's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I understand this is a betting proposition, but for us Bills fans the Allen selection is a long term investment. It is not the first season we should be concerned with, but rather how he does long term. I don’t care if he doesn’t start a game all season, but I do care if he is the answer at QB for the 10 years thereafter (or isn’t the answer). -
RD1, Pick 7: Josh Allen QB - Wyoming
OldTimer1960 replied to SDS's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Absolutely agree. I hope that he receives the required patience from fans and media. No QB would look good in this year’s offense. -
RD1, Pick 7: Josh Allen QB - Wyoming

26CB, I’m sure that you’ve watched Allen college video, as have I. I am SURE that Rosen is MUCH more ready to play now than Allen, but what I took from Allen’s video is that he was desperately trying to carry an undertalented team and he was not in optimal position to maximize his completion %, yet he took the risks to try to will his team to a win. I am willing to take a chance on that upside. Would I have preferred Rosen? Yes, because I am conservative by nature, but I can see how Allen could be a star (or a bust). -
The NFL disagrees that Allen is a long shot. He was universally considered part of the top 4. Is he a longer shot than Rosen’s? Yes, but the Bills and pretty sure many other teams felt that his upside was better than Rosen’s. Let’s look at the big picture- there were 4 top QB prospects in this year’s draft with one other (Jackson) being considered a possible 1st round prospect. Because of the Bills’ unexpected playoff season, they were on the outside looking in on these prospects. They were able to trade up to a spot where 2 of those 4 were available and they picked Allen because of his long-term upside potential. i am sure that even the Bills view Rosen as much closer to play than Allen, yet they still picked Allen. i don’t know if Allen will ultimately pan out, but I can see he has great physical talent and apparently a very solid work ethic and good intelligence (based on Wonderlic score).

Buffalo News, Rochester D&C, WGR make their money with negative articles. It is highly predictable. i expect some to be reporting on every Allen incomplete pass in mini-camps, spouting “you can’t fix accuracy”, and calling him a bust in training camp. He was not my first choice, but he has a crazy arm, prototype size and very good athletability for the position. He is clearly a project who needs time having played only two years at a low level D1 program. I know he is a gamble on greatness and it may take 2-3 years to know if we won that gamble. I only hope that the media and impatient fans don’t run him out of town early.
-
You should not expect more from Sal - he has become bitter through the long stretch of bad Bills teams and he knows that writing negative articles draws readers. i think you are over-estimating 2nd and 3rd round picks as “franchise players or likely starters as rookies “. In round 2, especially late in the round where the Bills’ 2 picks in the second were, maybe half of them become long-term starters and less in round 3.

Draft prediction accountability thread

I was wrong - thought at least one of Giants and Broncos would have taken a QB. I was also wrong - thought Mason Rudolph would have been picked earlier. -

Day 3 of draft rounds 4-7 let’s talk
OldTimer1960 replied to 17 Josh Allen's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It is a great story and inspiring. I have no quarrel with having to wait 10 minutes to hear who the Saints picked in the 6th round to watch Griffin’s story. “secondary” makes up 45% of the defense when they are in nickel (which is pretty often). -

4.5 is a very respectable 40 time for a wr.
