McDermott: NFL is a “drop-back league”
OldTimer1960 replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I can see trading up near the top for Rosen, Darnold and maybe Mayfield. I think it would be too risky to trade 12 and more than 53 for Allen. I know that there are significant mitigating factors and that he has some great tools and size, but his stats are worse than Tyrod’s (including passing yards) and some games were truly terrible. That has to at least be considered. -

I think fans and media are going to be brutal on anyone they draft at QB, just wait until the guy who many think will be “the savior” throws a bad INT on a rookie mistake. -

I’m not arguing that they should draft Jackson, but while he has some work to do as a passer, he threw more NFL type throws in college than Tyrod ever pulled the trigger on. I also think that Jackson may even be faster than Taylor and I strongly believe that Jackis more elusive as a runner. -
USC is a high profile school that generally has more talent than their opponents. That can tend to mak some QBs look better than they are and lead to them being over drafted. If Mark Sanchez had played at another school, he likely would not have looked as good in college and hence wouldn’t have been drafted as high.

The Bills are guaranteed Brady, Rodgers,Brees if only they give up all of their picks to trade up for Darnold, Rosen, Mayfield or Allen. These guys are mostly a crap shoot and there is not one QB that is on the same level as Andrew Luck (who has not led the Colts to much of anything in spite of his obvious talent. Supporting casts matter.

They are all projects to more or less of an extent. I'm not sure that Rudolph won't be better than Jackson or Allen. I like Mayfield a lot, but I don't think he will be available at 12. If he is on the board after Denver's pick, I hope that they can swing a deal to move up for him, but I wouldn't give up 12,22, and next year's 1st to move to 6 for him. If they could get to 6 for 12, 53 and 96, I would do that.
-
I would be willing to take the chance on him. You might even have to trade up a bit from 22 to get him and I could get on board with that. Can he become Russell Wilson or Deshaun Watson? I hope so if they go that way.

I’m not a fan of trading up, but I’d be stoked at that deal!

With recognition that Newton has turned out to be pretty good, Mayfield’s off-field transgressions are light-weight compared to Cam’s.

Again, bills HAVE called up to browns for first overall

How much trouble do you think USC has recruiting? They won the PAC-12, so had an automatic bid to Rose Bowl (I believe). Did he truly carry that team or was he part of the team that won. To to be clear, I am not deprecating Darnold, I think he is very good. However, many seem to believe that if only the Bills trade up for Darnold, Rosen, Allen or Mayfield that whomever they pick, will be On the level of Brady or Rodgers and magically carry a team that is currently under-talented and will spend all of their prime draft picks to move up for one of these “saviors”. i acknowledge that if a team has one of the very few all-time greats at QB, that will surely keep them competitive for a decade. However, you *might* find one all-time great in this QB class and then a couple very good starters that keep you competitive, but can’t single-handedly carry a marginally talented team beyond .500. For SURE, that is better than what the Bills have had for a long time, but go look at the Chargers’ record for the last decade when they’ve had a very good, but not HOF QB. -

You are either not understanding my point or you don't care to. Mason Rudolph has nothing to do with whether it would be smart to trade 3 1sts and a couple of 2nds for one of these guys. My comment was simply saying, expect Darnold, Rosen or Allen to be good, but trading that much for good (not great) should at least give you pause. -
CB Phillip Gaines visiting Bills

The Patriots are always picking up guys like this to see if they can bring out the talent that lead him to be a day 2 draft pick. Sometimes, different schemes and environments help guys like this play better. If not, you let them go. -

Folks SHOULD care about the cost. None of Darnold, Rosen or Allen carried their college teams to tremendous success, but yet some expect that to be exactly what they'd do with a middling talented team in Buffalo that gave up the majority of its draft to get one of them. Now, I'm not saying that they might not be good NFL starting QBs, but expecting savior level play is betting on a very long shot. -
I've seen this and I agree that intangibles are even more important than the physical talent. I think Rudolph has good talent and if he is as smart and hard working as has been suggested, then I think he is being seriously under-estimated. Before flaming away, please recognize that I am not necessarily lobbying to take Rudolph over Darnold, Rosen or Mayfield. Rather, I don't think it is a bad plan to keep their picks and take Rudolph, Jackson or Allen and then still have 22, 53, 56, 65 and 96 to get other good players (plus all of next yer's picks as well).

This is the right perspective, in my opinion. The QB who can single-handedly carry a team is whom everyone is clamoring to give up a lot of picks for, BUT those guys are VERY rare. Brady, Rodgers and Brees are really about it playing today. After that there are maybe a handful like Roethlisberger, Rivers and Ryan that are very good and can keep you competitive most years, but are not doing it without some talent around them. Realistically, the question is would you trade 3 1sts, and 2 2nds and a bit more to take a shot at someone who has a 50% chance to be Matt Ryan, .05% chance to be Rodgers and 49.95% chance that you'll end up with a total bust?

THAT is funny!

I was not a believer even discounting all of the off-field stuff. I think the guy that made him was Mike Evans catching Manziel’s prayers after he ran around in the backfield for 10 seconds. i DO think that Baker Mayfield is a very good NFL prospect. I think his game is strong and his off field transgressions were not anything compared to many other players.

Bills very interested in rudolph
OldTimer1960 replied to *******'s topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Not sure that I would not prefer Rudolph over Allen or Jackson. I think Rudolph has a good chance to be a good starter, but won’t likely single handed LT carry a team. Allen and Jackson have a tiny shot at being great, but to me have a high risk of not even becoming a decent NFL starter. -

Agreed, I think Rudolph is a strong possibility for the Bills. No trade up would allow them to get Rudolph, LB, WR, And still have 2 picks in 3rd (including the first one). Alternative looks to be Rosen/Mayfield/Allen and maybe have a 3rd round pick left (maybe also losing a 1st or 2nd next year, too) -
Bills Aren't Necessarily Searching for THE Best QB
OldTimer1960 replied to Shaw66's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
That is not exactly clear. Nobody knows if the 1st or 2nd pick is for sale. Why would Cleveland trade pick 1? They also need a QB prospect and they already have more high draft picks than do the Bills. As for the Giants, I don’t know why they would not sit tight at 2 and take their successor for Manning. -

OldTimer1960 replied to Shaw66's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Plans have to be reassessed when conditions change. When they traded back last year, They thought that their own(Bills’) pick would be much earlier than it turns out to be (21). Further, the 2017 NCAA season was played and the Bills’ opinions of the QBs in this class may have changed (for better or worse). There are other teams that have (had in the Jets’ case) that are also desperate to get a QB prospect and that is driving up the price to move up and also locking up the early picks such that it will be hard to find a trade partner early enough to get one of the best prospects. i am virtually sure that their plan was to use their extra picks to move up for a QB, but competition, changing conditions and opinions may preclude them fro being able to execute that plan. -
That may be true (I know that Cards and Phil’s are possible players), but I would not want to give up much to trade up for Allen or Jackson. I’d just as soon sit at 12 and take the lower ceiling, but higher floor Rudolph and still have all of my other picks left.

I think Allen is the riskiest pick of the top 4, but I think worth the gamble at 12 with no trade.
