Morale is obviously flagging. McD felt that he had to sell the Watkins trade to the leaders in the locker room, announce several times that they are not giving up on this season and then unleash on the players several days later when they were "feeling sorry for themselves". Now Boldin retires out of the blue reinforcing the message that this season is going to be rough. Something to lend hope for this season would be nice at this point.

The thing is that I'm not sure Lynn would have brought back the Roman system anyway. That offense was probably toast even though the personnel fit it very, very well The defense looks good but it's preseason so all non-veteran offenses are struggling to some degree. They did lose their top two cornerbacks and leading tackler from last season so I'm not sure I'm expecting them to be top 10 or anything. We'll see.

I agree. The real issue is that the coaches and schemes changed continuously so he was never really able to build up the talent for one particular system. I think he's a top scout. Whether he was a top GM depends on what you expect from your GM I guess, as he certainly struggled to get along with the coaches and really didn't provide any leadership on team direction.

Right. I don't understand. You can think you see lots of reasons in intangibles but his play on the field last season was at least of backup quality. Cutting him before camp even started and leaving no viable LT backup from day 1 doesn't sound like a good plan, but you obviously think otherwise. I hope it works out, but if it does it's really just luck because there is apparent backup plan.

Worse than Henderson has looked? I seriously doubt it. He was good enough last season that many on this board were advocating that the Bills move Glenn to RT so that the Bills have their best 5 linemen on the field. Now he suddenly stinks so bad that he can't even be a backup? It sounds more like sour grapes to me.

It would take a lot breaking their way. Probably more that is reasonable to hope for. But it's not crazy. They're really not that much different from a team that was basically .500 last season.

True enough. I guess I only remembered to 16-0 season. But even so, he didn't have the same QB play over his career so I'll stay with him. Rice was great and I was a big 49er fan and you can definitely argue that he was a better all around WR, but it's tough to get the frequent highlight reel catches that Moss made out of my mind. He was at least the greatest downfield receiver of his era.

Yup. In his only season playing with a top QB he set the all time NFL touchdown record. Imagine if he had played with Montana and Young his entire career like Rice did. I remember John Madden saying once that even if Randy Moss is double covered on a deep route you should still throw it to him because he'll make the play more often than not.

Remember when Sean Merriman got hurt on the first play after he signed with the Bills? That's still the record.
