When Opulence Isn’t Enough: A Pig’s Lament

Does the placement of the bye week really matter?

As fans, if we want to fixate on this, well, ok. I hope management/coaching isn't, because this is exactly the type of thing that leads to paralysis by analysis. The bye week really doesn't matter that much. -
I’m sure it’s an enjoyable hobby. The cancellation of this fall’s two hour refresher, while disappointing for you and your fellow hobbyists, will have no real world impact whatsoever.

Saying each of those 20 million is a criminal seems like a bit of a stretch. All I’m asking for is consistency. Either take all refugees or none of them. Pick a side.

Derrick Henry gets 2 year $30m Dollar Extension ($25m guaranteed).

The value, imo, is fluid. It may not be worth it 3 years in a row, but if we win a SB in year 4- I think it’s worth it. -

But need to see the forest through the trees... How many of those teams pose a legitimate challenge the Bills? One? Did you see that the Bills got some dudes in the draft that may help them out a little? A couple of D tackles, a high level defensive end. a great CB, and depth too. Just check out the first five rounds, for example.. -
Why should I? Having a live instructor is a far superior learning experience. Your 0.0001 cent in tax money it costs is insignificant.

Add to the above, the increase in willful ignorance and the growth of the anti-education movement mixed with a rising apathy for truth. Some people will believe anything (particularly if it supports their emotional biases) and others don't have the motivation or intellectual endurance to to seek something approximate to the truth. I understand the mention of Sports Illustrated as lending credence to the story. There was a time when they boasted a stable of writers such as Pat Forde, Peter Gammons, Frank DeFord, Rick Reilly, and Peter King... Sports Illustrated represented the pinnacle of sports journalism. Sports Illustrated is now a brand, operated under a license. They do not have an editorial board and they're on the brink of bankruptcy. It's been nearly a decade since they had any credibility. As far as local country music radio stations disseminating news, let the buyer beware. -
It was amusing. The Los Angeles Chargers continue to be the masters of the schedule reveal.

Does the placement of the bye week really matter?

You can’t look by one season. If you take historic results then the #1 seed matters. There will always be exceptions like last year but predominantly the top seed gets to the SB. -

Mentioned this in another post, but one plus in the Bye Week coming after Week 6 is that it gives Hoecht and Ogunjobi two full weeks in the building before they hit the field. It may allow both to hit the ground running in Week 8 with extra preparation. -

I prefer the bye being around week 10-12 but for the team I doubt it matters much. Obviously if we get the playoff bye that one really matters -

Ya IMO there's not enough evidence to correlate a late bye being an advantage. Have the majority of teams the last 10 Years or so won the Super Bowl with a late bye? Seems so, but not in convincing fashion. Also could be because of so many factors, which is why it's hard to correlate a late bye with being a big advantage - Yesterday

Gotta be an old head that came up with that. Who still names their daughter Belinda? That's like saying Gertrude or Maude.

After hearing that he was turning heads at mini-camp I thought I'd take a closer look. Some have commented that his college tape is unimpressive. I disagree. Some college receivers benefit from scheme touches, pre-snap motion and free releases. Prather was used almost exclusively outside, facing press coverage and battling DBs for contested balls. And that's what Beane specifically wants him to do, even if eventually he shows that can also line up and work from the slot. For now Beane is not looking for him to operate at all field levels but certainly they are at least aware of his proven ability to run in breaking routes after selling the vertical. Prather tests as a decent but in no way exceptional athlete (RAS 7.68). He has been criticized for an alleged lack of explosion as evidenced by his 30" vertical and 9'6" broad jump but I think that needs to be reexamined. His vertical, while disappointing, is perhaps partially offset by his truly remarkable ability to adjust to the ball at the catch point. Nobody in his draft class does it as well as he does. And he does start out with a height advantage over the guys who will be covering him. Although his combine vertical and broad jump suggest a lack of explosive power/lower body strength his ten yard split, 1.53, is elite (Brian Thomas' was 1.55, Justin Jefferson's 1.57) and his 20 yard split, 2.64, is also very good (Thomas' was 2.53, Jefferson's 2.61). Ill take those over his broad jump all day. His hand size/wingspan check out ok. He is a developmental player who probably belongs on the practice squad but if he truly shines in OTAs and preseason games Bills may have to make a decision. Word gets around. Of course he won't be getting much in the way of reps so he will have to make the most of his opportunities. Beane's draft strategy was based on addressing perceived needs and some of his later picks are clearly seen as roll players. Prather is in that group. He may not make it of course but he was an excellent 7th round pick.

This is the biggest part of it. Folks claiming he's just an extra WR ignore his lacking skillset as a TE. Can't block (or doesn't), poor seam cutting routes, doesn't excel at finding open spaces in zone, does not breakaway or release from man coverage. If he was a pure WR he would not have gone first round. Maybe 3rd.
