You don't make rules to apply to exceptions, hence the saying. Once in a blue moon some team with a terrible record makes the playoffs, and everyone thinks the rules need to change. The league mostly has it right. The biggest issue they created was eliminating the bye for the top 2 teams AND expanding the playoffs to 7 per conference. It's often the case that #1 and #2 are neck and neck or #1 was aided by an extremely weak schedule while #2 had a rougher go. This is reminiscent of when teams like Tenn would dominate their division and get bounced their first playoff game. #2 really gets hosed in this scenario. Regarding the expanded playoffs, it was already rare to have 6 teams that had a legitimate shot at the SB and deserved to be there. Now, we're all but guaranteeing there's just a feeder team in the mix.

It may "seem" like that but I don't really think its true. Both the Houston game and the Cincy game the coaching was not the major problem in the first half. Both those games were primarily execution fails by the players on the field - particularly our tackling. There were players in position to make plays - that's all a coach can do - the players failed to make them. This was a coaching mismatch first half though. McDaniels had McDermott on his heels and was finding ways to stress our defense with clever playcalling and good scheming. The only other game this season where I put a terrible defensive first half so squarely on coaching is the Atlanta game and Babich had playcalling removed from him at halftime in that game. The only coaching fail on offense first half was the 3rd and 15 pass in the flat to Shakir which is only a sensible option if you are already decided you are going or trying a long FG on 4th down. If there is a chance there that you are punting that can't be the playcall. Otherwise players miscues were the problem. Players have the make the plays that are there to be made and avoid the mistakes. That is their responsibility.

Whenever I think about this problem, I always conclude the NFL has it right. Every season there are one or two weak divisions, and this rule makes those division races much more interesting. Your way makes the division races almost irrelevant - it means the teams are fighting for a chance to be the seventh seed in the tournament and have to go to the number two seed in the first round. If you're a fan of a team in a week division, you want to think that your team has some kind of shot in the tournament, and home field for the first game gives them at least a little edge. The message to the Bills, which is the message to every team every season is simple: You want home field? Win your division. The Bills should have thought a little more about that when they played NE the first time, and certainly when they played the Dolphins. Win one of those games, and the Bills would have been where they wanted to be. The change the NFL did make, which I like, is that they now reseed the playoffs after the first round. That means that if the AFC North team survives the first round with a home win, they're going on the road the next game, even if they have a wildcard opponent.

Just went though... Of all teams with more than one win (Dallas at 8 and up), only the Colts (Luck's rookie year) and the Lions (Jim Schwartz only playoff appearance as HC) made the playoffs. Both lost in WC. Not sure what that's supposed to mean, other than I figured those that were 500 or higher to have had more luck making the playoffs. Although I guess counting the Bills that means 3/5 make playoffs when you're 400 or better. I'm still convinced that McD has been taking over play calling at half time pretty often.

Allen is a freak of nature, no doubt. But didn't you see our injury-ridden defense step up in the second half? You didn't see a team that 'didn't blink' (to use Knox's expression) when things went bad? You didn't see Brady start calling good plays? When a pickpocket walks down the street, all he sees is pockets. When a horny hetero guy walks down a street, all he sees are girls. When a McD hater watches a Bills game, all he sees is Allen. I love Allen and think he probably deserves another MVP award. But I think McD is also contributing to our wins. Outside of Allen, this isn't a good roster.
