Bishop may be playing out of position at free safety, which exposes his lack of range, coverage skills, and grasp of the defense. He might do better at strong safety where his physicality would be a real asset. Sure does look like a poor draft pick, especially with Cooper DeJean falling out of the first round. Too early to tell about Carter, I'd say, but it doesn't look like he'll be a star, that's for sure. Coleman, Davis, Solomon, and Grable might salvage this class, though.
-
Not beane's best class but interesting this list stopped just before Davis. I also think Grable has come along well and wont be surprised if hes a starter by the end of his rookie contract. SVG could also pan out on the interior and start before the end of his rookie contract, and Solomon has shown flashes both good and bad. Still plenty of time for players (especially the first 3 picks) to figure it out and get many contributors from this class. Like almost everyone i worry the most about carter.

THIS BILLS TEAM NEEDS TO WATCH ROCKY 3 NOW!!!!!

I hope we beat the Ravens week 1. If we do, there's the possibility with our schedule of a 7-0 start going into the Chiefs game. I doubt we start off 7-0 but there is no reason why we shouldn't -
Early returns on Monday morning TBD threads are awful.

If you are cutting Hamlin, do it now...
Alphadawg7 replied to Ethan in Cleveland's topic in The Stadium Wall
Hamlin is a backup Safety and totally replaceable - no doubt. But his replacement is not on this roster, and if they are, they certainly haven't stepped up to show it yet. Hamlin is going no where this year because Safety is currently our weakest position group and its not close. Rapp and Bishop will start, Hamlin will back up Bishop and the hope is that Bishop takes a step forward this year to be at the very min an improvement on what our Safeties did last year. The only hope in terms of someone replacing Hamlin is Forrest steps up - but I don't think I have heard his name mentioned even once the entire offseason by anyone and he is still at the back of the depth chart. So odds of that happening before the season begins seems pretty unlikely and he is teetering on being a roster bubble guy right now. -

The Bills have no viable safeties. Rapp is hurt again and remains hurt. Forrest apparently can't beat out a much of injured or bad players. Hamlin is all effort no results. Bishop is raw and injury prone Hancock is a rookie with zero NFL experience. Cam Lewis is a JAG and not even a good one. Does the work dumpster fire mean anything. -

This team need to learn to tackle now... -
The 2024 class has played a total of 17 regular season games, sorry not going to fully judge them yet. He had a fumble recovery for a TD last night that got called back on a penalty.

Preseason Week 2 Bills at Bears - Game thread
billsfan89 replied to HappyDays's topic in The Stadium Wall
I am not putting too much stock into a pre-season game where starters were not played at all and the other team played their starters. I just don't see the need to panic. I will say that I was hoping Cole Bishop would have sealed up the starting safety spot opposite Rapp. Hamlin is not a bad guy to plug and play as a backup but this team may be looking at an in season trade at safety if the production level from Bishop isn't there. -

I'd think they are looking at every aspect of the D and if what you say is true than why in some games last year did the D come up pretty big in somme games and not others ? As the players such as Josh & others have said, the other guy get paid too to stop them and are very good at what they do . I hope that the younger guys get the D down by mid season to dominate throughout the rest of the season . -
It seems like Carter was looking pretty good last year prior to his injury. Hopefully he gets back to at least solid rotational guy. But bishop needs to show something fast
-
Does there need to be a rethinking of the basic D?
boco357 replied to oldmanfan's topic in The Stadium Wall
I put in game day thread that Babich is set up to be the fall guy this year if they falter again. Look at last season: Ravens game, late score and fortunate with 2 pt miss. Give the Chiefs the biggest output of the season, but will give credit at the end and got off fielding holding to FG. Rams and Lions games give up over 40 pts each. Even the Broncos playoff game gave up early big play TD. But like others have posted so far this preseason-3rd downs given up like candy, every run play is at least 5 yards, TEs or WRS wide open, QB rollout to wide open throw, screen passes no answers for. What does this defense do that is good, besides be ok when they are playing with the lead? -
You gotta ***** up off the field or something else highly unusual to get cut as a 2nd round pick in year two. Yes he’s struggled mightily but our best path to success is hoping it’s just rust and injuries preventing him from playing to his potential. It does seem Hancock is making serious strides. He is just one of those guys who finds a way onto the field and makes it imperative to keep him there.

Today I would rather have Shavers. I like what he has done to make the team the past 2 preseasons. Fits the role outside. He will also be on most special teams units.

I just read it was the first shutout for the bears in the preseason since 1994. I just want to say 1994 sucked. Everything about 1994 sucked. -

I agree that safety play is one part of it. The other part is McDermott's scheme, which has been exposed every year in the playoffs in the Allen era, even with a pair of All-Pros at safety. Put incompetents like Bishop and Hamlin back there, and you're practically guaranteeing the same result. Rapp can play, but he's one of the most injury-prone players on the roster. In the whole, sad bunch, the only one with potential is Hancock. The only answer might be to put him at free safety alongside Rapp and pray that they both stay healthy. That and lock McDermott in a closet come playoff time. -

Right now I think the starting safeties are Rapp and Lewis. Lewis gets a bad rap because of that one play against the Vikings, but to me he offers a lot more than Hamlin. Bishop needs to get his butt in gear as the third guy, and Hancock is 4th. And Hamlin gets cut. -
Good Night / Bad Night - Pre-season Game 2
Bleeding Bills Blue replied to GunnerBill's topic in The Stadium Wall
Everything felt low energy and effort. Bishop never got a hand on the guy and didn't really have to swim through a ton of traffic. Just a mis-step and a low effort chase. He know's he messed up, the key is learning from it and playing with the required aggressiveness from wire-to-wire. -
Elijah Moore.......I think he is trending toward not making the roster
eball replied to Special K's topic in The Stadium Wall
The only one of these three we’ve actually seen in regular season football games with Josh Allen is Samuel, so I don’t know how you can even begin to make such a statement. Amari Cooper is still a free agent. That should tell you everything. I believe Beane should try to trade Samuel after cuts. Palmer isn’t going anywhere and there’s no reason to believe he won’t be at least as good as he was with the Chargers. Moore is still a mystery, although dropping an easy dump-off last night doesn’t help his case. -
Keon could salvage it. IMO Keon has a great season. 2nd round pick- Cole Bishop- maybe the light turns on, but he looks lost out there. He let tiny Xavier Worthy rip the ball out of his hands. Has me made a great play yet? Any signs of hope? Carter- probably our weakest lineman. He would surely be cut if he wasn’t last years third rounder. That’s possible 1 for 3 with our first 3 picks. .333 is good batting average in baseball, but ***** for top 3 picks. Hopefully Keon steps up, to save this draft from being a disaster. Cooper DeJean was top value for our pick, and whom I would have drafted.
