I once posted the offseason after Fairchild left for CSU that he was not as bad as everybody made him out to be & he was dealt a lousy hand to work with because he could not trust his qb to do certain things you need to do in a game for an offense to be successful. Fairchild has done a nice job so far at Colorado State & he had success in St Louis. The problem was not Fairchild for the most part.

Exactly. My favorite part was Losman calling out Fairchild after the Pittsburgh game. If I was Fairchild, I'd say soemthing like "I bet Brady would be ok in my offense."

Either way, I still like Losman the guy but it should be apparent to his loyal fan base that the Bills weren't the problem with his development. If a team in the NFL believes you have talent, they would take a chance on you. See Mike Vick.

Fairchild might have been hamstrung, but come on. It's the NFL and there should be no reason to keep the play book to one page. Even doing that, this team does not execute on offense. Sure sounds like coaching to me or the personnel department for drafting players who can't be coached.

See, this is the part I don't think people don't understand. People think the coaches were limiting Losman and holding him back. however, I think it was more of a case of saving the team and allowing to win games. I'm sure coaches recognized that Losman was very erratic and made a lot of stupid plays.

There's a reason they are going to be running no huddle with Trent in his 3rd season and won't let Losman audibile in his 4th. And it has nothing to do with athletic ability. It is the reason why, even Edwards doesn't make it as a starter, he will have a long career in the NFL where JP won't.

If only we could have somehow combine QBs: T.P. Edwarman. D.J. Flutson would have probably be a pretty good QB too.

Give the Bills credit. How many QB's have left the Bills to go on to star for other teams after Lamonica. I don't think JP will even do as well as Rob Johnson did in his post Bills era. Whether JP lands on another roster for awhile or not, I don't think he would do well enough for us to regret the Bills let him go. As far as coaching don't forget that Sam Wyche, a former HC, spent a huge amount of time with JP to try to teach him everything about being an NFL QB. Face it, JP is just not that bright and he tends to get an attitude that he is not getting a fair shake way to easily. No team wants a QB with those 2 qualities.

Vick was just released by the Falcons today. His next step is getting Goddell to reinstate him. Then the media hype starts. And then he is back in the league. Jax anyone? Not like anyone goes to their games to protest him there.

His propensity to get sacked and/or fumble and/or throw the ball directly to the other team's defenders at any point during the game doesn't help either.

Yeah JP was terrible.......................................meantime, I am still waiting for Trent to play as well as JP did in 06.

JP is a gunslinger.

Probably the least astute assessment of JP Losman ever.

Gunslinger?? Like someone with the savvy, intuition and skill to improvise based on what he sees unfolding before him and able to make successful, split-second decisions?

And last season, the guy was a mope. He isolated himself at gametime and when his number was called, he was as unprepared to perform as ever.

Yup, great guy. Great teammate.

Losman has the physical gifts, but he never put it together. He was too prone to awful decision making and pressing to make plays happen when the play just wasn't there. He may have been enough of an athlete to get away with that approach at Tulane, but in the NFL, he was up against superior athletes and the risk/reward was tilted almost completely against him. While JP should enjoy much of the blame for that, the Bills organization didn't do him a lot of favors. He did develop during 06 and especially after the "bye" week, when the Bills re-tooled the garbage OL. But, with all things Losman, every step forward was followed by a train wreck.

Apparently, there was some interest by other teams but Losman made a characteristic bad decision and decided to wait for an offer where he'd be declared a starter.

At any rate, it is hard to put a sh---eating grin on and feel overly ecstatic that the Bills completely wasted yet another 1st round pick on the QB position and got one 7-9 season (when JP was the undisputed starter) out of it. Yippee, fuggin doodoo.

Grossman apparently decided to drop the "1st round" mentality and took a minimum contract to compete for the 3rd QB spot (and maybe the 2nd) -- but with that contract, the Texans have nothing at risk and could dump him on the QB trash heap in a heartbeat.

Part of being a good coach is coaching to a player's strengths and putting your players in a position to win. Fairchild never did this. This doesn't mean that JP would have been good had they done it, but the coaches did not play to JP strengths. One thing i have always wondered is why the Bills put the training wheels back on the offense in 2007. They took them off in the latter half of 2006 and JP showed some flashes that he could be a decent QB. But the second they restricted the offense, JP started struggling again. So why did fairchild/jauron force an offense on JP that wasn't suited to his strengths? That is where fairchild lost me.

I also have a big problem with the fact that when we drafted him in '04, it was widely recognized that he'd take a few years to develop because he was so raw. Yet when push came to shove, the coaching staff(s) were not willing to risk it.

Agreed & good post. The bills certainly did not do Losman any favors, but he certainly did not do any favors for himself either. The guy was eratic at best & down right putrid when he was at his worst. I really believe that I do not think any coaching staff would get much more out of him then Jauron & the merry band of morons did at 1 Bills Drive. I remember back when they got rid of Bledsoe & annoited Losman the starter. I was at the gym running on the treadmill next to Van Miller & I asked him about JP. He said with such conviction that he will never make it as a starter in the NFL because he is not accurate & he has no mind for the game. I laughed it off at the time but looking back, man did Miller nail the hammer on the head with that predicition.

You make a good point. Something must of happened in the 06 season that Losman lost the trust of the coaching staff. Drafting Edwards in 07 just confirmed that suspicion. People stated at the time Edwards was such a value that the bills could not pass him up. BS, if they were sold on Losman like everybody going into that offseason thought they were noway do they ever draft Edwards with a first day pick. The moment they drafted Edwards, Losman's days were numbered as a bill.

I suspect the training wheels were put back on as the coaches attempted to reel it all back in and mitigate the damage that a sputtering erratic offense might cause -- minimize risk taking. Especially when the defense had a lot of green new players and players at certain positions being carted off in waves.

some details

Former Chicago Bears quarterback Rex Grossman has agreed to a one-year deal with the Houston Texans.

The Houston Chronicle reported the story Thursday, and Grossman's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, confirmed the deal Friday on his Twitter page.

"Rex Grossman has officially signed with the Texans. He is excited about the opportunity to have a fresh start with the Texans," the agent's tweet read.

The contract, contingent on Grossman passing his physical, would be for $620,000, the minimum a seven-year veteran can receive.

Grossman, 29, was an unrestricted free agent but hasn't made any known visits prior to this.

I'm not taking JP's side here, just go back and look at his Head coaches and QB coaches and how frequently they changed, not many QB's could evolve under those circumstances. Not to mention how he kept getting pulled again and again, that would sap anyone's confidence.

How would you like Turk Schonert as your QB coach or offensive coordinator, a 10 year backup holding a clipboard and 10 year assistant coach who never achieved anything himself. Ralph Wilson wanted him fired and replaced after last season. Jauron kept him claiming he wanted "continuity" on the team, what a load of HS.

This coaching staff is a QB killer and will be until they are all fired and replaced. Want to see someone have a tough time finding another job, see where Schonert goes after this season.

How do you know that?

And where is the evidence for this? You have none. Well before the draft, JP's agent made it clear that JP didn't want to sign with anyone before the draft, for obvious reasons, in fact, just the reasons in the article above. He wanted to make sure that the team didn't turn around and sign a young guy to develop. He wanted to find the right place to land.

Now, after the draft, how many FA QBs have signed? There is no hurry for JP. There is also no evidence that he's having a tough time finding a job. That's just what you want to believe.

These quotes are from the Tim Graham thread;

Is there any truth to the rumor posted here that NFL teams have shown no interest in bringing in Losman?
That's no rumor.

Unless your QB is having trouble finishing page 1...

They took them off in the latter half of 2006 and JP showed some flashes that he could be a decent QB.

Really?

Check out the month of December. Bills lose 3 of their last 5 games while JP throws a total of 9 TDs, has 6 ints, loses 2 fumbles and is sacked 15 times.

That's "taking off"?

Looks like someone had a little trouble playing in the cold.

Actually, the Bills faired better when they didn't let JP throw the ball. 4 of their 7 wins cam in games where he attempted under 20 passes.

Good thing it worked and our 2007 offense wasn;t erratic and sputtering. Seems like Jauron's over conservatism intentionally neutered the offense. We can't risk throwing TDs, because we might throw an INT. Sometimes its worth it to take a step back so you can take 2 forward. Jauron would rather run in place, forever at 7-9.

Thank you for verifying that you don't actually watch the games. (But, the Bills are usually on the same time as your pats*, so i can understand why you don't see any). I guess he had trouble playing in the cold when we beat miami in buffalo and the jets in the meadowlands, huh? Both of those wins were in december.

Blaming Losman for those 3 losses is the height of stupidity. Some bogus calls cost us the SD game. Robert friggin royal and his out of bounds feet along with jauron's idiocy (deeeerrr, what do you mean its 4th down, i dont have a play call) cost us the tennessee game. And the baltimore game, the bills were i run for the bus mode, kind of like 2007 vs philly.

The wait is over. Trent was a better quarterback than JP was on the very first day he took the field.

Tell me, do you think that if Trent was out there he would have a job by now? Allow me to help.....yes, he would be signed and starting for another team. You just can't face reality about all this, can you? Forget stats. Forget arm strength. Forget everything other than the fact that JP loses football games.

In this sense, he matched up well with Jauron.

I am still WAITING for Trent to prove he is better than JP. In 06 JP put up 19 TD's & had 2 THREE HUNDRED Yard Games. Trent has MUCH BETTER weapons this year than JP did..........................................NO EXCUSES he NEEDS to at least match those 19 TD's this year, or he is a BUST.

Yes, those two wins were in December, and as I pointed out, they won those games beacausethey changed their gameplan. By limiting his pass attempts, they limited his likelihood of a bonehead play and turnovers. It worked in the Mimai game and the GB game. Therefore, he had less trouble in the cold as long as he didn't try to pass more than 30 times. In fact, they only won 2 of 7 games all season when he was allowed to "play to his strengths" (over 30 attempts).

I didn't blame the losses entirely on JP. But you were the one making the obviously wrong claim that he improved after the bye. A few bad calls lost the SD game? Otherwise JP did fine? Look at that 1st half. Starts with an int. 3 consecutive 3 and outs. On 5 drives, he faces 3rd down form the shotgun and cannot convert (he fumbles away on one of those).

"your pats*". Really, that's all you've got given the rest of your lame response. Guess you're going with your strong suit, eh?

When did i say than < 30 passes a game was playing to JPs strengths? Playing to his strengths means calling the types of plays he was most successful at, not simply called tons of passes. I guess a dimwitted pats* fan like your self cannot comprehend any nuances of the game, huh?

2006 pre-bye week (7 games): 6 TDs, 6 INTs, 8 fumbles,

2006 post-bye week (9 games): 13 TDs, 8 INTs, 5 fumbles

Even the most ardent JP bashers will tell you that his 2nd half of 2006 was much improved over his first half. He cut down on turnovers, increased TDs and started looking good as a QB. By denying the improvement, you validate by above statement by exposing yourself as someone who simply does not understand the nuances of the game of football. I suppose i should expect no more from someone who probably started following the NFL in 2002 after you got your tommie brady jersey.

No, actually I was the one saying that throwing "< 30 passes a game" was playing to his strength (specifically I said < 20).

Yes, you're clearly a man who can appreciate "nuances". Endlessly coming back with "well........you're.....you're...you're, like......a Pats fan", is very sophisticated and nuanced.

Anyway, if you want to lump a bad finish to '06 with a decent stretch in November (even there, he had one great game)--go to it. If it makes you feel less foolish for sticking with a bust like JPL, I understand.

But it doesn't erase the fact that, no matter how you spin it, he played poorly in December---except when they asked him to do as little as possible.

JP's gone. Time for you to get behind Edwards, like the rest of us right thinking folks.

Good Christ your little new england*-loving skull is awfully dense.

1. Since when does throwing few passing attempts equate to the coaching staff asking him to as little as possible? The Bills had big leads in both those games, so therefore had no need to pass the ball. And if the running game is working, which it was in both of those games, why continue passing? I dont give a crap who your QB is, if you have 3 score lead in the second half, you run the ball. Only your patriots* continually pass when they have a big lead.

2. Lets assume for a second that your asinine theory holds water (which in reality it doesn't). How is 200 yards and 3 TDs asking the QB to do as little as possible?

3. This discussion is about JP Losman in 2006, and has nothing to do with Trent Edwards. Edwards was still in college.

4. The fact remains that JP played well in the second half of 2006 (as evidenced by him being the NFLs 11th or 12th rated passer that season). He didn't follow up in 2007 or 2008 and looked very bad. But that does not take away that after 2006, there was a belief by a sizeable number of people, including many around the NFL, that JP had turned the corner and the light had turned on for him.

5. You simply repeating that JP had a bad 2006 doesn't magically make it true. The numbers don't lie. Those who watched the games don't lie either. But keep on thinking that "he finished bad" and that the team surrounding him played no role in going 2-3 over the last 5. (its actually 2-2, because the week 17 finale was a joke of a game after we'd been eliminated) And keep on ignoring that the Bills had gone 5-2 in the 7 games prior to the 2 game skid and pretending that had nothing to do with Losman's improved play (a direct result of the OL reshuffling).

6. You have shown an extreme propensity to defend anything and everything pats* related, including tom brady*, rodney harrison*, vince wilfork*, and bill belicheat*. That is what makes you a pats* fan.

There is NO DOUBT that Mr WEO is a Pats* fan trying to pass himself off as one of us to try to stir up crap.
