McDermott still in over his head

It's games like this, against a well coached team, where McDermott's ineptitude is magnified. He just doesn't have a feel in critical game management situations. Not challenging that deep pass on the first drive was atrocious. It spotted the Pats 7 points early and we almost didn't recover.  The entire stadium knew it wasn't caught, the Pats were sprinting up the field to hike the ball, it's early in the first losing a timeout means nothing, why not challenge? Just terrible. He's always overthinking critical game management calls and for guys like Vrabel, Reid, McVay, others, it just comes natural. McDermott is not a bad coach, and I've been impressed with the way he's responded to criticism and challenged himself to grow and change in these last couple years, but he just doesn't have an elite football mind. It's painfully obvious when we go up against good coaches.  Even if Josh carries us to a superbowl this year, won't change how I feel about McDermott.

he never even used the timeout he previously saved. And had a terrible excuse about it post game. Huge game changing play = challenge whether you saw it clearly or not.

Does this mean that they have always depended on stadium replay to decide to challenge a call or not?  that would explain a great deal.  I have a couple old ipads to offer up to the cause and I'll even let them use my youtube tv login since apparently they havent figured this all out yet

Didn't need to see the replay, anyone watching knew that very likely it wasn't caught , and the patriots knew it too and were sprinting to the ball. Also, there was very little risk to challenging with losing a timeout early in the first, and a huge reward that was likely to be gained, it's an automatic challenge for anyone with football savvy. And that's my point, he doesn't have it.

McD deserves a lot of criticism for not throwing a flag. I don't care what he says, there has to be someone who sees the replay we saw and tell him to throw a flag. Or he just has to be able to do it himself.

 

But bringing up Reid right now is... weird. Guy blew the entire Chiefs season by one of the most stupid coaching decision I've ever seen last week against the Texans when he went for a 4th down on his own half instead of punting.

What a rough post and read after a great comeback win by the Bills. Let's enjoy the win for a little bit. That comeback was pretty epic. Fun watch!!!

 

There's a time and place to make your case for and against McD. He certainly isn't a bad coach and he deserves criticism and praise for yesterday's game. 

 

The bottom line is the Bills won and are heading for another playoff run. McD will lead the way like it or not. There will be plenty to discuss after; we will see how it all plays out.

The challenge criticism is fair but vrabel/mcdaniels were absolutely humiliated in the second half it is borderline lunacy to me vrabel is being talked up still the same as before the game like nothing happened lol

Because the narrative is that the Pats lost, not that the Bills won. Diggs is even acting like it's cool they lost because now it takes pressure off of them and they can do their thing now.

In most walks of life, the percentage of truly competentent people is quite low.  I credit McDermott with being competent. I mean that as a compliment.

Typically the gap from competent to great lies in the details.  And in game, McDermott is not particularly good with the details. And he does not hold himself accountable.  He blundered the non-challenge. If he truly does not see that as a failure, he will never improve in that aspect of  the game. It his job to do that correctly.  Not to make excuses.    

I think evaluating McDermott has a more to do with the evaluator than McDermott himself at this point. He is good NFL coach, who has never gotten the first seed in the AFC, or won a road playoff game.  Some see these outcomes as dead ends, that there is no evidence will change.  Others think McDermott has an irreplaceble skill to get to the dead end points, and any change would be for the worse.

Can I ask a question? Why is he getting crucified when New York should have buzzed in and overturned that on its own, without him needing to challenge? On nearly every questionable play where the offense is rushing, they almost always buzz down.

That cannot happen and what is worse is McDermott in previous games has used timeout in the second halves of games, huge difference when Bills had the ball Vrable ran down the field with red flag and did not even need to use his challenge because play got overturned.  Those kind of mistakes will bite you come playoff time and McDermott should have got a hint when the Pats were running to the line with huddling to run another play. The fact is had the Bills lost yesterday everyone would be talking about that catch on 3rd & 7.  Even Gene Steratore from CBC said it most likely would have been overturned. I know the Bills pay someone to monitor replays and that guy should be fired.

They have the challenge flag for a reason.  If his strategy is to rely on the replay assist, that is an even bigger indictment of him being a fool.

So you crush him for the job he did in the first half (he deserves criticism) but you give no credit for the second half?  There were adjustments made, so he does get credit for those decisions

I'm critical of McDermott but can we please just enjoy a big win. We all get it. Everyone is praying in the playoffs he doesn't have to handle another end of game management situation 

 

It's never going to change. He's also never getting fired. We're going to have to win a championship with the guy 

 

In the 2nd half, outside a bad run allowed because of lost containment, they allowed 17 yds on like 15 plays. Gotta give credit for the two big stops on back to back possessions. I don't trust McDermott but it cant be all negative and no credit.

Gotta say, the whole McD is a problem thing is getting old.

 

10-4 without a true number 1 and maybe number 2 WR. Many, many injuries on defense and they had an amazing game after the first half.

 

McD has this team playing well. Yeah, need to start off faster, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he’s a terrible coach.

 

As far as the review? He stated he saw it on the in stadium Jumbotron and it looked close. Replays had not been available to the team before the patsies hurried up to the line. Not sure why this is such a big deal. At the end of the day, don’t matter.
