With Kincaid out Brady should see how Coleman works in the intermediate slot. Everyone says Shakir is a slot receiver, but he’s not even that anymore. He’s a backfield receiver now.  Shakir has great skills but also has the shortest arms and smallest catch radius in the league. I think Allen just got sick of having to make perfect throws to hit Shakir over the middle past 10 yards. The answer may be on the roster: Coleman.

Maybe. But I have a long-shot hypothesis that leads to a sunny conclusion, which is that McDermott is mishandling Coleman. Coleman has shown promise--look at the Baltimore game, for instance, and a few of the early games last season. He may not be a bust from a physical standpoint, like Boogie Basham, and he might not be an Elam-like bust either, a guy with talent who just doesn't get it. Rather, he might be sulking and McDermott is inadvertently making it worse by shaming him in front of his teammates and the world. In other words, he might be extremely immature (aka stupid), thinking, "I'll show them, I won't make this catch. THEN we'll see who's sorry, heh!"

In his defense, public humiliation is pretty damaging and can backfire spectacularly. I speak as a parent and teacher here. It's possible that Coleman can still be everything the Bills hoped for, someone who devoted his summer to getting into great shape and was ready to shine this year, only to run into a rough patch on the field maybe, then being embarrassed. He withdraws into a pout, McDermott doubles down, so does he, and we have the current state of affairs. If this is the case, we haven't seen the best of Coleman yet. He might be a dawg if properly motivated.

The bad news is that I don't see this turning around. It takes a lot to realize, as someone in charge of discipline, that you're going about it the wrong way and to change course, especially in such a public forum (in front of the whole team, I mean). Does McDermott have the combination of insightfulness and courage it takes? I'm dubious. But it's possible.

So your self admitted long shot hypothesis is "Blame McDermott". How refreshing.

I have a hypothesis as well, one that I happen to thing is far more likely. You take a good kid, you put him in high school. He's physically dominant above his peers. Doesn't have to put in the work and can still shine due to physical gifts. Then put him in college. He's not as physically dominant, but enough where he can still get noticed. Keeps getting told how awesome he is and after a while he buys into it. Finally that kid gets drafted into the pros. His physical stature no longer can dominate. Oh, he's still a good kid and all, but he never learned the work ethic to succeed.

His coaches and even some of his teammates try and motivate him behind the scenes. However because they don't tell him he's amazing like he's been told his whole life, he can't handle the criticism. He stops caring. He stops working. He falls behind players like Shavers. Puts out terrible effort and is possibly late to meetings and distant when he is there. The coach even tries benching him as a lesson. Coleman withdraws further. He cares a lot less. He hasn't learned the tools over his lifetime to cope with needing to work to be the best. He has a very short NFL career and is just happy to have made it.

These theories don't have to be competing... they can absolutely co-exist.

Everyone knows that different individuals are motivated in different ways.

It's possible that the Bills haven't been pressing the right buttons with Keon.

When a team is down like this they can fall apart, and start finger pointing or they can... wait for it... Circle the Wagons and turn the adversity into an opportunity to succeed. Like I said earlier I hope Coleman takes all of this to heart and has a career day against the Bucs.

Keon is more worried about posting his stats on IG than actually producing.

He does it after every game and it's freaking annoying. He makes an entire 'story' of his numbers. Like GREAT dude.. you scored. We lost by 17 and you put in a half-ass effort.

Really? I don't follow athletes on IG... are there any posts you can share?

I agree with you that the Bills could better use Shakir but as for your theory, Shakir can't possibly have a smaller catch radius than Cole Beasley and it's hard to believe that Josh has lost patience with him.

I wonder whether that shot is still living rent-free in his brain?

he looked great in the Ravens game though

It certainly seems like Coleman's leash is getting shorter.  With Gabe Davis on the PS, along with Samuel and Moore getting snaps on the outside, Buffalo does have a few options.  That's not even considering Mecole Hardman.

I honestly didn't think about that but one has to wonder. His body language doesn't seem decisive

I still think the entire offense infrastructure around Allen with this McDermott regime is not competent. This ain't Bill Walsh and cutting edge offensive philosophy. And I think this is hurting Colemans development.

Ppl will counter with the offensive production, but Allen has been under multiple coordinators and different philosophical systems and produced in all of them. Again this is Dick Jaroun who lucked into this eras John Elway

He even looked good in the jets game. He had a big catch taken back on a penalty

In the 1st 2 games he reminded me a bit of keyshawn Johnson.

Something came off the rails so idk. He doesn't strike me as a wr that sucks. He has real abilities, but something happened after the 1st 2 games and his confidence looks gone

In the interview when he was asked about the Steve Smith video he looked extremely sad and I could tell he was hurting. I felt bad for him...

It's just my speculation but you gotta wonder if a personal issue is going on with Coleman. It's just a vibe I'm getting

Asante Samuel going Ham on Coleman saying he doesn't look like he is sorry for his actions, isn't acting like he even cares that he put him and his team in that predicament and says the coaches are probably looking at him doing Tik Tok dances on the sidelines and just shaking their heads...also said players like him are NOT well received in the locker room by teammates on winning teams with great cultures and that he better get it together fast because he has officially entered the bust conversation.

Long show but started it at the point of him talking about Coleman---can go back 3-5 minutes earlier to hear him talk more about Josh and the Bills in general...

It's apparent to anyone with a pair of eyes and a logic tree in their mental arsenal.

"0" isn't it, and it doesn't appear if he's going to be "it" for this team. His "1/11" contributions don't justify his seeing as much action on the field as he's been privileged to get IMO

He is a net negative contributor, and for a team with championship aspirations, it's justified to keep him off of the roster so that someone else may step in, and do things that Coleman either can't, or wont do

Nice kid (I guess) but that vernacular is a primer, which is typically followed with, "but he/she/they suck at their job(s)."

Something Ive been thinking about, not exactly this but in the same vein...

Coleman looked decent in the beginning of this year... And then we brought Po back in.

Suddenly, the guy who ended his season with a "cheap" shot last year was in the locker room. And not only in the locker room, but revered and buddy-buddy with all the team leaders. Everyone would've been happy to have him back and joking with him, etc etc.

I wonder if Keon had his feelings hurt on that, and it lead to further disconnecting/moping.

Or he's just a goofball who cant show up on time. 🤷‍♂️

Keon is a goofball who can’t show up on time and doesn’t care to follow the team rules.  Poyer re-joined at the end of August though, before the season started and before Keon had that decent game against the Ravens.  If Keon is somehow moping bc Poyer is on the team, further shows how immature and nonsensical he is.

In one of the hard Knox episodes, Brady made a comment about WRs should know they are just running a clearing route, and shouldn’t expect to get the ball.  Brady said “call it an effing Brady Route”.

what other offense tells their WRs something like this?  I’m guessing none, and I’m sure it has something to do with Coleman jogging and our passing offense being terrible.

I mean, blown coverage, teams not respecting the deep routes, there’s so many reasons a guy running a deep clearing route…. Could still be thrown the ball.

People forget that when it comes to football, NFL players are a lot smarter than many give them credit for.  They don't have to be explicitly told they are running a clearing route, they understand the play design, they know what the reads are given what the defense shows.  They know when it's a run play.

They know when they aren't getting the ball.   Remember Bishop (I think) saying he could read Worthy's body language and tell when it was gonna be a run play?

But it doesn't help the offense disguise anything if all the players on the field don't at least give a plausible FAKE of effort.

Poyer signed to the Bills practice squad on August 27.  He walked into the Bills locker room before the season started.

Does not track.

Agreed.

Also, when you have Allen at QB, on any given play he can escape the pocket, buy time, and all of a sudden your clear out route becomes a legitimate option.

Keon looks mostly clueless on those plays...

Davis and Shavers both seemed to excel at that and we already know Shakir does as well.

Sad…, yet true, it’s hard to imagine what Beane is thinking when the words wide receiver are rambling around in his head, he doesn’t seam to fully grasp what is needed from the position, lol, the odd thing is that he has done well with other positions in the lower draft rounds, frustrating to say the least,

Man that stings so much more! I appreciate McD and Beane, but we have to move on from them. They have proven that at best that draft second and third tier rate players that over achieve. There hasn't been one player that they drafted that is no longer on this team that is remotely any good,  outside of Edmunds, who is decent, but no star player.

Starting with 2018, and only counting players who are still active:

Tremaine Edmunds LB of course.  Even OP acknowledges him.

Harrison Phillips DT.  Started 17 games for 3 years and all 10 this year for Vikes, 59-74% of the snaps.  Vikes #5 D last year, 14-3 and in 2022 13-4.  Solid.

Siran Neal CB.  Played 17 games for MIA and 11 so far for SF as a STer.  SF currently 7-4

Wyatt Teller G.  Starting for Cleveland at G since 2019.  Has been to 3 probowls and 2nd team AP twice.  Might remotely be any good.

Ray Ray McCloud WR.  Has played on 5 different teams since leaving the Bills, including 12-4 Steelers, Conf Champ and SB with the 49ers. Largely PR/KR Led the league in PR in 2021.  Also saw significant WR snaps with PIT in 2021 and ATL in 2024.  Ya kind of think he might remotely be good if he lead the league and played in 2 conf. champs and a superbowl.

2019
Devin Singletary RB.  Solid year for HOU in 2023 with more yards than he had in B'lo.  Currently playing for the Giants and his YPC has tanked.

Cody Ford G.  Started every game at G for Cincy in 2023, all but 1 in 2024, all so far this season.  He ain't an all pro, but they haven't found better.

2020
Isaiah Hodgins WR.  For a player who was not "Remotely any good" there was a lot of heartburn here when we lost him to the Giants on waivers.  After an OK year in 2023, he lost playing time in 2024 and gained it back this year.  Played a lot and had a decent game last Sunday.  We'll see how he does now Daboll's gone

Dane Jackson.  Back with the Bills now.  Played ~40% of the snaps for CAR last year in 9 games and 3 starts so they might have thought he was remotely any good

2021
Matt Araiza. P.  Punting and holding for the Chiefs.  Lots of heart burnings here about that.

Nick Broeker  G, Playing for Houston, mostly ST.  All 9 games this season

Alex Austin CB.  Has been in New England last 3 seasons, playing ST and CB.  Has started 5 games at CB in the last 2 years.

That's 11 players besides Edmunds who were drafted by the Bills, went elsewhere, and saw significant playing time.  Several STers, but when a guy is leading the league as an STer he might be above "remotely any good".  6 have been starting.

I know, @BuffaloBillyG, there I go with the facts again

He always has drafted lots of NFL caliber players

We used to be the last stop for NFL players...

Our cut draft picks or not re signed are usually picked up ... He has lots of guys on Rosters

What he hasn't really drafted is much pro bowl type players ... Lots of good , not lots of great

cole bishop is saying hello now.. I really liked the draft pick and he looks like the light is on
